The Shorewood Supporters of Excellence in Educational Development (SEED) Foundation has received a bequest in the amount of $200,000 donated by Carol Habeck, a 1950 Shorewood High School graduate.
This legacy gift will support the SEED Foundation’s Educate Forward Endowment Fund, which was established to provide long-term, sustainable support for educational grants that benefit the Shorewood School District and help future generations of Shorewood children succeed in their educational journey.
“We are very grateful for this generous bequest to support the SEED Foundation,” said SEED President Melissa Nelsen. “This contribution from Ms. Habeck will allow us to continue to promote educational excellence in Shorewood’s public schools and help prepare each Shorewood student to meet the challenges of the future. We are so thankful for her generosity.”
Carol Habeck passed away in July at the age of 88. She was a lifelong resident of Shorewood, living in the same home her father built on Olive Street her entire life. Her older brother, Gordon Habeck (Class of 1941), also attended Shorewood High School. She served as a secretary for the Bowling Congress, and was described by friends as an inspiration — quiet, modest, and always positive. Ms. Habeck never married and had no children. She wanted to thank the Shorewood schools for the experience she had as a student.
The Shorewood SEED Foundation is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Shorewood public schools. Since its launch in 2003, SEED has raised millions in partnership with the Shorewood School District to support public education in Shorewood. Each year, the SEED Foundation provides grants for Shorewood teachers to make sure they have the resources they need to deliver the best possible educational experience to students.
“We are most appreciative of this donation from Ms. Habeck to the SEED Foundation’s ‘Educate Forward’ endowment, which will help our schools immensely,” said Shorewood Superintendent Dr. Bryan Davis. “Contributions to SEED help our students develop academic mastery and empower them to become successful in their future endeavors, build character and grow into responsible citizens and leaders in their community, and maintain healthy practices to ensure a lifetime of wellness.”
Through the growth of the Educate Forward endowment, SEED Foundation seeks to serve as a catalyst in the community to help provide the Shorewood School District with the financial resources necessary to continue its tradition of excellence and innovation.
