is there anything that is on the agenda currently that we would like to pull out a consent or table okay I will take a motion to adopt the agenda I'll second favor motion carries doctors turkey can you remind us of our overarching result for Sherwood School District thank you our students are leaders who challenge themselves to grow and achieve chemically pursue their passions navigate to change learn continuously and contribute to the common good thank you Awards and recognitions tonight thank you it's nice to share some awards and recognitions at the start of this great school year I'd like to by congratulating Shorewood High School senior Mile and Bell who recently earned academic honors from the College Board National recognition program Maya received the national Hispanic recognition award for Excel on the PSAT and AP exams and in the classroom the national recognition programs Grant under Grant underrepresented students with academic Honors that can be included on College and scholarship application and connect students with universities across the country helping them meanings connect to colleges and stand out during the admission process great work Maya congratulations again I also want to take time and recognize and celebrate the nine staff members who have reached 25 years of employment in the district that water that's 5K teacher Jolene Berry special education teacher Julie Bennett 4th grade teacher Kristen and math interventionist Title 1 math teacher Kathy Daniels and will be recognizing tonight multilingual learn teacher and coordinator Roxanne Tibbetts at Lake Bluff AR teacher Kevin Carmen at shs choir director Jason Clark who also serves that sis Orchestra director and lastly principal Tim Kenny 25 years of service the level of commitment and dedication that these nine staff members have shown in our school is inspiring and totals 225 years of service we're lucky to call them Sherwood District employees and that's the truth just as a reminder to read the sentiments from these from their colleagues about each of these staff members you can see them on the district website that note recognition section moving on to Athletics I'd like to recognize the shs boys varsity soccer team I believe there first princess Suites it had a great week last week beating Brown Deer 80 and Greendale 10 and I believe they are winning tonight as well they're off to an awesome start with their season keep up the good work girl swim teams also off to a great start they beat Milwaukee is there an early last week with a woodland conference dual match win and they also participated in the Nicolet Sprint invite this past Saturday congrats to at least Jacobs who took second in the 100 IM Gretchen ladder who took third in the 100 freestyle 200 medley relay team who took third also want to be sure to recognize the boys cross-country team who participated in the arrowhead invite recently for many it was their first time running varsity at a showcase meet a special shout-out goes to Runner will frohling who placed in the top 25 and earned a 14th Place medal great job also want to recognize the Shorewood mountain biking team who participated in a race this weekend at Minooka Park the weather the weather was rain and the course was challenging but the hounds scored third out of 31 do you want High School great work to this team that concludes our Awards and recognitions as we start the year but I would be remiss if I didn't thank all of our students and our staff and our family for such a smooth and successful start to the school year thank you so up tonight for soon achieve in a results I'm going to turn it back over to you. Answer key thank you you know I always liked contacts padecen tonight we got something that I'd like to just inform the board as well as talk with our citizens who are in attendance we talked about this section being a student achievement and results section and we're going to begin something tonight where you do a student presentation for roughly 15 minutes and hopefully then a five-minute academic update and just something we're working on in the future it might be data tonight we're talkin about some of our summer work not meant to be a report play not a results report but just a celebration of all things that make us unique as a district a commitment to academic Excellence as well as all of the other things that we focus on so with that I'd like to introduce principle of atwater's Janice Carter doctor Carter are you there I am can you hear me we certainly can awesome if you hear any noise in the background we have parent orientation this evening as well so I'm doing double duty but it's okay we'll get through it I'm just going to go ahead and share my screen look at you so you got that down okay but let me back this up a little bit I want to take this time to celebrate and present my new sixth graders I was asked to attend and love to attend there Plantation and their understanding of perks the last year at this time I will ask must work a teacher to present their their method for introducing perks to their 4K Scholars and this year I was able to be present music Traders talked about perks in the 6th grade classroom and how they have Trends transition to be leaders here in the building so without further Ado I will stop talking and allow them to take over the presentation let's move forward here is the overview with our usual of our Parks mating process crew or are they are perseverance and responsibilities kind of discipline thank you for being here tonight today I'm here with hope made Vivian jazlyn and Adeline in myself contacts may I think you have to unmute yourself sweetheart is there an amazing teacher is Miss  in Roff Miss fergal and business cell with Raven off cheech's Ela whisper go teaches science and social studies and Michelle teaches math the slide helped us all transition to our sixth grade rules as leaders Spokane explained our sixth grade year we've all came on different ships different classes of a straight H multi-age in even different schools and now in the same boat we're not three ships / class for one vote for 6th grade crew so this is a cartoon of four people on a rowboat and their boat is sinking and two people are working very very hard and two people are just back and relaxing that shows that they're not using their perks and they're just yeah in this video there's a kid supporting and sharing on his class B number 5 king wears number 5 show us 5 West $5 number one art class for King Classic show us 22723 Grandpa game number after the video we went to turn and talk about what member and a passenger of a boat is some of their answers were for a member is of a boat if someone is able to help people out whether when they need it and a passenger song he just sits I'm doing nothing we discussed the importance of being theaters knowing when it when it went to be silly and went to be serious it's in the word collage that shows all the attributes of the six have the process of how we found out the perks or the attributes of a really like so both of you got into smaller groups with all the perks a bigger like sheet of paper and walk down with sounds like what it's going to look like and when it should feel like and then we like realize what should be honest and what should I do you want all the sixth grade broke into groups of three or more imposing notes of the sheets of paper about what should be expected in the halls and the bathrooms in the classroom and at lunch and at the playground we have a couple of more pictures are just showing the process when the three classes came together as one to discuss perks in all aspects of the building are some of the Posse we hung in there up in the hallway we hung up so everyone can see his expectations for all students and our water was specially for the 6th graders so we tie this back to the one key item we won to work on from the student survey where students mentioned that they felt that not all teachers help all students accountable for their actions and behavior so this was one way that he decided to work towards raising that percent by making sure that they were all in one Accord when it comes to expectations throughout the building and then is also tied back to Arielle work plan or we Infuse perks into every aspect of what we do the focus for each month and holding students accountable as well as embedding the person to project rubric as well as the adults having a service learning project in action under on positivity gratitude and professional where we use our purse all day everyday and I are examples for our Scholars so what we did was take it a step further we did this last year as well we did what what are called rotation every single day they took time out of classrooms to go over expectations for all aspects of the building and we also practice all of these safety evacuation drill so when it happens or when we have a more serious practice we are already so that's what we did individually but we made sure that we did it at and because we all know that we work as crew and that's our presentation I want to say thank you new 6th graders you did a fantastic job detective Carter thank you students what number is any questions and I really appreciate it here and I thank you dr. Carter 4 like explicitly time at back to you I know some of the goals for at Water this year was really helpful to hear that being really helpful to have it tied back to bigger goals thank you thank you enjoy the rest of parent orientation thanks so much thank you have a great evening do you think dr. Carter think students so as I mentioned the second part of what we're going to try and do in this short 20 minutes nipit is just give what I would call an academic celebration what's something we're working on that we really feel is helping us attain academic excellence and in light of that I'd like to ask to come forward my joint who is our director of teaching and learning and Cape Sebastian are wonderful reading specialist and doing so I just want to say thanks to you Kate not that I'm not thankful and grateful to make sure but I know this summer you took on a great Challenge and did such a great job working with our teachers and some professional development about one of our key priorities related to standard and a basket and Mike to talk a little bit about work so that you can see hopefully how we're going to do and get some increase results in that area because we're focusing on working with our staff all right thank you my part is pretty short here but this is kind of a continuation of the last time I was in front of the board we were talking about our curriculum evaluation cycle and I had mentioned some of the work going on in literacy at the elementary school and this is work that's been going on for 2 not anything that I take ownership for but important to support and Kate this one of those teachers that like if you're going to go to something that teachers are at Kate's going to be there so weather is bad stress walking in the building or summer school or summer work groups it's there and leaving the work I'm going to kick this over to her to give you a historical perspective of how we arrived at this because it was deliberate process and student-driven process of of why were focused on this literacy work thank you is Mike Stud a couple years ago the former like plus reading specialist and I were looking at the trends in a preferred to pull out intervention for reading and we noticed a significant number of students coming to us for some bass decoding needs at the time we thought maybe the solution was finding a program that we would be using in that pull out service and we wrote a grant to the seed foundation and they found it a very generous 20,000 other grants for us for materials for students again thinking about our model of support being pull out soon to remove from the classroom to get individualized instruction or small-group instruction for 30 minutes at a time when then we started to look after I see us work and Equity practices and the amount of pull out some students were experiencing to debts and some basic education are foundational skills we realize that we need to be more proactive in our solutions for students and to keep them in the classroom as much as possible so we proposed a pilot program to our program director at the time Sam Coleman and dr. Davis in the spring of 2020 one thing I'm getting all right and that was going to be a case 3 pilot program so all of our teachers in those grades were going to Pilot one of two research-based phonics programs with the hope that we could address some of those foundational skills needs within the classroom walls without taking so many students out of the classroom and so last year and we were able to Pilot that I think teachers are really thankful to have a resource in our hands that was systematic and explicit to address dude it needs we decided to continue that pilot for a second ear I'm to gather as much information as possible and also thinking about how we're linking that to the data we collect so fastbridge screener we know is our Universal screener for reading and looking to see if it's having an impact their we know last year was our first full year of looking at three times a year we also implemented a phonics diagnostic assessment that all students K through three are taking to track the impact of these two pilot programs so once we kind of got the ball rolling on this foundational skills we started to unseal the layers so to speak of other instruction that we're providing for ELA and that's really where the summer work came in and we met last spring with dr. stone key to think about what are some opportunities teachers are really excited to dig into this work I think that especially in that case three group an impact they could have on instruction in their classroom when we were able to provide a resource that was systematic and explicit they wanted to see where else we could take that instruction we had done some work with unpacking standards but that water and we decided that we were going to start unpacking them at the district level and really working to bring some cohesion to the work that we were doing case 6 and I'm at the two elementary schools but then also expanding it to 7th and 8th grade so this summer to think Iris she was a tremendous with helping us organize and get ours. And she was so kind to just make sure all the logistics were there but we had 23 teachers and I hope I can quickly name them all we had a group that came on this is about 20 hours we met with the case Reed Group the first week so thank you for the Lake Bluff staff Trish Mandela Tom Dental Katy call Eddie Gale just Aubuchon Brenda Iris Maria Gruber cotton candy I have a truck. Amy Miller and Kathleen Snider from Atwater we had the entire Kindergarten team represented Amy thoresen Jenny Anderson Sarah Stark Friday Richard jholi Meri jannat and Hartford Noel Shanks Magnolia who did two weeks she represented third grade the first week in fourth grade the second makes Jackie butkiewicz emerisa riepenhoff and then also Katy Perry Como and Marcy Baron shot from sis and the work that we were able to do we really are the initial D Treva day of like Dreamin envisioning what do we want for our students in Shorewood when it comes to reading and writing skills what do we hope to develop and so we were able to come lay out our vision for that and then align it with the standards are the expectations put forth through the Common Core State Standards what are those standards mean where the priorities at each grade how are we able to integrate English language arts standards into our content areas the one we're looking at opportune we're reading and writing development in science and social studies we really messed up kind of where everything falls within the scope and sequence of a year but then we also wanted to look at the vertical alignment kindergarten through eighth-grade what is the experience for a student when it comes to reading and and the district where are there gaps right now when it comes to resources or Comfort level for teachers where are there opportunities for professional development where are we doing things really well and getting results and where can we capitalize on that and so things began to lay out some units by grade level at the end I think the most powerful day was Friday Mike was able to join us that second week to kind of see the full scope and sequence that teachers had put together what are we identifying again as those priority standards where were we Focus most of our attention and then starting to design some common assessment so that we can check our practice and instruction to make sure we're getting the outcomes for all students this year were excited we're going to begin some committee work with the teachers during Wednesday early release there's going to be a team of teachers focus on literacy I'm so we can continue this work of unpacking standard aligning instruction analyzing or data to make sure that we're having an impact on student outcomes providing that reading and writing experience again to meet the needs of all students and so I believe there be time for grade band meetings where they're specifically with their cohort but then also larger committee meetings were looking at literacy or in some cases so I will just say our teachers are phenomenal to think about 10 the past two years that they've gone through his classroom teachers and to dedicate time this summer to really dig into the work it was really energizing I was coming the tail end of summer school and just to be able to spend afternoons with them for 40 hours in my case it just is the kind of work that invigorates you and inspires you and I and so lucky to work beside them so yeah all this is to say like you usually have to bring someone from outside to do the work that Kate does with our teachers and it's just important that we have staff that are able to lead each other in this work also a shout out to Play-Doh been around this because like this work is is not cheap either so we're lucky to have seed to help us with this but as you all know as schools are in a bunch of crunch and so I really like and yes the features and we need to stay that supports that work as well thank you guys house fantastic. I have a child who was I think in the 7th grade or the second pilot class and third grade and I was really impressed with the phonics I don't want to do anything that I had just read like as a clearly I'm a couple of articles about her shift and approached like where it seem like the past few decades we have that product behind and now we're circling back maybe where are we and that's basic is this is that true of us now are we coming back to more of an emphasis on Phonics you talk about like I know I was like what you think that it's the reading words right yeah whole language versus phonics I don't think we were ever in one camp or the other and we currently don't exist in like phonics only Camp so I think that messaging gets a little nutty sometimes Out There Our approach right now we have phonics is one component of our literacy black so it takes place 20 to 30 minutes a day in the younger classrooms and then the rest of the time is spent engaged and connected reading and writing experiences I think sometimes when people hear phonics phonics approach to think of like an old school worksheets and kind of drilling kills skills but it's really about moving towards teaching skills and then application of that within connected texting connected writing opportunities so I think that again Our intention was to create something cohesive in the district we got two different Pilots right now with the yeah that the end of the school year we will select one that will be our resources for teachers prior to the pilot teachers were pulling resources that they either had or had previously used we just wanted something consider and to make sure that we again were building on the skills pastry and providing again that consist instruction for students super happy to talk more in a different yeah well I was just curious because of course I'm sure are familiar there's these articles that are like we're doing things that totally didn't work for anyone and now no one can read like it's very alarmist so I was pretty sure that wasn't the case I was curious like did we start to shift away thank you for that I think you just like to tonight can you hear me my son is a younger kid he's no a freshman was in the program where he was pulled out in the early grades and it works fine and they had a therapy dog to that was there so he was he was totally down for it but what does it look like in the class like what does it look like in the classroom now like I know what it looks for my son but so today what does it look like when you have the in in classroom reading sure that we're not quite there were still kind of operating in this like mid space where were able to provide some pushing support for students in the classroom minute and it looks like an extra adult in the room kind of there to support any student that might might need help but certainly we've got our eye on individuals we know that that extra boost of transition to some Bastille three teams that ICS is going to interviews I think it's going to look more like that right and so I'm collaborating with the classroom teacher looking at the lesson but you're about to present and think about what all the Avenues we need to provide access for all students regardless of their what's a status as a reading intervention student right there things that could benefit all students and I think that's where we want to but we kind of exist in the space right now that we do still have pull out Services the hope is with getting some resources in place in the classroom in the in like at the universal level we will see less kids needing to be pulled out in the first place I know that was really the goal when we were thinking about the numbers of students that we were skiing in a case though when I came to Shorewood six years ago and my partner is over there I'm trying to think we had about 60 students on our case and right now we're sitting about 24 and so we were able to reduce the number of students for multiple reasons another big thing that our teachers have done is they've done a list of supporting students in the classroom and threw some coaching when we look at data identifying needs right away and then helping them signs of small interventions throughout the day that the classroom teacher is providing I can speak only for at water but last fall if we're kind of sitting in that traditional model we identified about 37 kids but that could have come out based on. alone right but then working with the teachers and helping them kind of design again little Snippets throughout the day 5 10 minutes here on an isolated skill when we re looked at the data in the winter we only picked up 16 students and 4th you know just a half of those students didn't didn't need to come see us I'm so rethinking the support model was always to have students remain in the classroom right and so whether that now it's just us into the classroom I think going to be a whole nother model but also are there things that we can tweak right and so it's not an automatic kind of flag you're coming with us as much as we love our students and provide a really I think warm environment for them our goal is always to have them get that instruction from the classroom teacher we should just because of an additional layer that's great thank you thank you as we close I just want to I think one of my jobs is to make sure that we connect dots and as we get our priorities for the year Mr Joyce said as a goal for our authentic learning an academic Mastery build more collaborative opportunities across grade levels with a focus on standards alignment and as a result deep in use of common assessments and this was the Catalyst as we began that work the focus on literacy so that's the connection to the Strategic priorities and thank you very much okay so up next is an opportunity for public comment Carrie could you make that announcement on Zoom any public comments from online viewers if you'd like to make a public comment you can use the hand raising function or unusual any public comments from online attendees and they only two more opportunities for common later in the meeting thank you all right the board business impossible board so we're going to start with a the board candidate appointment and sorry I should have been an executive summary in here at this so I will take a motion to appoint Abby Fowler to complete your head's term on the school board I'll make that motion to appoint mom every child left to complete the term 8 months charm I want to thank all three applicants for applying I think I just did it interview about this proposed and I was saying that I think we're lucky and show it to have folks you are really interested in the at the school where does and we think all the candidates who applied and considered being part of the school board as I really want to thank Abby Fowler for accepting the appointment I think that as I said at that I think you're going to do a great job and really appreciate the kind of level of interest that you have shown in kind of like in Turner school district is the best it can be for quite some time as a former student for your own kids so excited to have you on the board anything else looking forward to doing the work so I have a motion and a second favorite ocean carry and then an update on board officer so I let a Bebe the member-at-large and so Becky would you be interested in being the clerk okay so I will take motion for Becky fear to be the board clerk so I moved just in time so next up is opportunity for us to recognize Rock CB and I know Joanne wants to start thank you thanks board and rocks and its really nice to see you tonight and it's great you're here with family and that makes me all the happier board members was an error on our part and we did not recognize Roxanne as our August 23rd opportunity in front of our peers and that really was heartbreaking and I've no iPod Johnston I want to do it again I am so sorry that we made that are certainly not how we want to recognize you and so thank you for coming tonight and allowing us to let you know how much we value your service 25 years your service to our multilingual Learners and design of that program your commitment to mentoring our new teachers and our induction program and more than that just being a staff member that we want to make sure we let know we appreciate and Val with that I want to thank you and I'll turn this over to Peru yes so of course we had to ask your colleagues to say things and so I'm wondering like should I sit here and do this I feel like normally you would have to stand in line everything will be watching you I can hear it all right so I can take like three steps forward to your camera cuz your event Orient turn around turn around during her 25-year tenure the stable for the district she served as the fourth and fifth grade teachers at water for 11 years before transitioning to her current role as multilingual learner teacher at water and multilingual learner coordinator for the district for the past fourteen years how would others describe Roxanne as someone who always puts her students best interest front-and-center a classroom teacher for many years has always been a pillar of dedication for students and families the classrooms have always have always been warm up being an inclusive Roxanne enjoys collaborating with other teachers to help every student reach their potential and Beyond this drive to give only the best very best students guided Roxana directions to change roles and become a teacher multilingual learners and eventually internal timing will coordinator Roxanne is very passionate about welcoming new families and ensuring that they have resources to support their transition into our school district and has continued her collaborative approach and frequently works Alexa support are multilingual Learners both in and out of the classroom Roxanne Works tirelessly to advocate for these students and the ml program and make sure all students and families needs are met another colleague said Roxanne always been a person who has led by example in addition to her leadership role as ml coordinator Roxanne work to build and Implement our mentoring program in Shorewood what began as a partnership is Cardinal Stritch in the Southeastern new teacher project with elevated by rocks and into our current show at induction program Roxanne serve as co-leader of this program for many years and continues this work as at Waters lead Mentor Roxanne's dedication to students and families is also evident in her commitment to Growing the teaching profession and supporting colleagues and last another colleague said Roxanne is not only an amazing educator but also wonderful colleague she put she has a fun sense of humor has the best laughs and makes those around her smile is all a tease and everyone feels comfortable in any situation we are lucky to have such an asset like Roxanne in our district and again we want to congratulate her on her 25 years of service hey I'm thank you downside of bringing your family is now you have to share all your treats thank you again and thank you for making it here I know you were at Atwater and kind of rushing over dolls and all the teachers who made it to celebrate you thank you in the future can we have kleenex here alright then we get to have our facilities project update in person with my Kaufman oh and Heather sorry Heather you didn't drive so I just came up because I just came up because that we wanted to start with playground update and make sure that I'm available to answer any questions just I think that you may have seen in the weekly memo last week that we have finalized their design process it's been really exciting to see it come together I'm really like I love talking about this project is like something fun and just kind of innovative and different but as we shared in the memo we had an opportunity to really build on the work was initiated by the PTO a few years back and then take some additional input that we had your meetings with Lake Place Early Education teachers last spring we invited the community to view some of the grg ideas it's part of the open house and then again one other time later in the spring and we were able to have her bring all those together the grg team Works closely with him some of the specific teachers reach out to a special education teacher who helped kind of walk through and look at life look at how to modify some of the initial plans to make sure that they were accessible and put together our plan so we're right now just waiting on permits as soon as we receive permits are hopefully will be in the next week or two will be able to start first obviously demolition on the existing playground and then soon thereafter we're going to start dinner trying to get things if possible and a lot depends on the weather so it's like really difficult to tell exactly what are timers he's like usable during the winter would be the goal and then completion in the spring so as to the top it's the little playground at Lake Bluff yes we are now a gemologist in the brand new playground playground at Lake Bluff thank you for that clarification so we had escaped we have Aaron holder who's the designer that really worked most closely on thinking through through the design elements and he's going to kind of walk through the design and talk about some of the decision process and some of the opportunities that kids will have it spread this and yes this is designed specifically for the 225 age group so I'm going to turn it over to Aaron from jrt Place cakes hi can everybody hear me thanks for having us be a part of the board meeting tonight I just want to point out real quick about 5 minutes my wife is going to get home and get the dogs are going to become really loud so I'm going to have to look yeah I guess I'll I'll dive into the design and another caveat want to talk about race scene or anything I am not the person also bring the design up okay can everybody see that the brown eye color they be here on the ground that would be engineered wood fiber or the playground mulch that I'm sure you're all familiar with play Blue the dark blue the light blue orange inside of a yellowish color that would be warm place rubber surfacing that safety surfacing and then any of the red arrow would be a piece of concrete as we go through this it's kind of a big model so it could be a little slow but you can probably see that we're proposing to expand playgrounds in the south so we're going to take out the current fence that you have been expanded Ben-Hur so this pathway that runs from east to west going down that that will remain unchanged up to this point and then from there we're proposing to put in 88 sensible pathways all through the space so in playground turns that means of 1/16 slope no greater than we're going to keep the current swings that you have and then not because they're in pretty good shape we see no reason to do with those they should last for a few more years the Blue Area would he eat a corn Place rubber surface named make that accessible swing easier to get through I think we can all agree that even though playground mulch is considered a safe accessible surface really not reasonable to call with that and then I'm going to try to keep your sense of the Prague Rafi that we want to put in here we like to create Hills like the plants freeze you think he'll give an opportunity to integrate Play features into the entire space he's leveling out of space and dropping something in you were building up amount here not so this is me get up there going to be a loud right now sorry right on cue I have a question actually well maybe it's new for a few minutes can you remind me that we decided to have a piece of rubber is that right okay make it more fully accessible so I'm wondering about feedback from you said you work with a special education teacher so I'm just thinking about access and whether the wood chips are going to create an issue the prayer all kids to be able to access the playground don't use the mic please how to strategically throughout so we're trying to kind of eat This was intended to be the Nash play safe with a lot of the original Vision brand so we're trying to kind of create that balance so what they did is they use the poor and play strategic Lee to make sure that there was access to like a lot of different areas throughout the playground and it's not wood chips correct it's the playground like that rubber will probably use wood chips Wade I was not real wood but we all know like you can't rely on to it doesn't really like you would think you can pick up stroller on it but yeah so I think what I hear you saying is that this was an attempt to balance the needs of people who need to be real with this desire for a natural playscape so it allows for plenty of Wheeling ground and also allows for the natural place and it looks like it's fairly well-balanced that was the end you got it thanks ground on that another quick question before sorry about that that's alright just real quick and I may be late to the party on this but the United States section of the playground is that being touched at all not really our look for a man to have a playground and fire that is also extremely cost-prohibitive. So I think this is a nice nice balance so yeah I was I was saying that this is a report high slide and we're proposing to have the surface be washed with this platform here so no lip then a saltwater Shear this is a 5 ft high slide this is not really accessible in regular terms and as reference in case you're wondering you know this is about climbing wall is retaining but it's a great opportunity I mean two and a half so you can get some time cuz I'm never quite look as we have this platform over here then we're proposing to a low like a 18 inches off the ground rope Bridge micros to secondary flatworm are there are you upper body pieces of equipment so on the left year these are clamoring Loops there they're like a really tough around rope material and they spin 360 so those would be for it's much more challenge connectivity so that would be four more of the older kids but we also are proposing you where we're going with your stationary which should be more than you know but traditional type of movement exercise this is another of balance rope so they'd be able to hold onto this rope overhead man climb onto that platform hey so again we're using form play surfacing to try to get more kids into the space Centre get on some of the climbing opportunity not so this is a tunnel about three feet tall from the from the surface to the top of the tunnel inside there how are using Waze retaining to paper out that mound and then this is a kind of taking a while Sports image right so this is a log climbers here got new stationary of Steel bars that we hope will provide climbing opportunities here would be a spot for you if it if it will be also declined but you know if someone were having difficulty trying to Traverse this they could sit on this this is more of the rope material that I talked about memory moves we get custom robes and that's made for most of our playground and then for cheer the climbing opportunities that lead over the tunnel and then into this large log climber log scramble whatever you like there's a lot of different ways to move through this space we can try to make sure that we do things unscripted so it's not just climb up some stairs to go up the ramp to a platform and then go. Waze and then we're here we're keeping the same play area in the same spot you guys have the luxury of mature trees and we see no reason not to take advantage of the shade / those so I will just kind of changing the shape and reschedule  and area once you're here you already have a table but we'd like to put that on a concrete pad and then this is an ETA Stampley table I want to keep this is my kitchen we could probably see we bench seating in a tree we have been cheating throughout the space for her kids but let's be honest teachers and caregivers pokeballs in three musical instruments are I think that we've been trying to get like get things to to where we can get shovel in the ground in the fall hope that we can get things to like take on caution tape so that they at least had like something to play on in the winter but like I said it since we live in Wisconsin in the weather here is horrible I don't care. it all has to do with the first big sleeves once that happens thanks to have mercy structural items in and have the form place you're done because that bad is the temperature dependent and obviously we don't want to put that in and compromise it in the future so those are the two big things a structural I mean perspective retaining walls in the platform's the sides and most of the climbing but I most likely didn't know they will be carpentry things that end and other and also has the hole in design and general definitely super entertaining and the aspect I love what you said that it's not just going to be like a platform stairs and then a slide cuz I mean I babysit kids and that definitely get some tentative after a certain amount of time so I definitely appreciate all the different ways kids are able to play on this I think the amount of detail put into this play structure playground is great I love the different Services I think that especially the sensory areas where they meet I think that's that's really Innovative in new and it's it's a change from from the previous out of old-style playgrounds and I think it's needed. the the history of natural playground back in February of 2020 when my company started working with the district are your business manager was Marta Kowalski and Marta left shortly after we stopped on her way out she said there's been a lot of people focused on natural playscape with Lake Bluff and there's been some preliminary designs and we are 300% over our budget but. and that that that that evolved over the years and looked at some different things I reached out to one of my past clients the Madison Children's Museum and said how do you know that works in the area of natural playscape sand they that you pointed me towards Gary G Heather did the independent research and we wind up meeting and she said well there's this company of their local is brg everybody thinks they can do a great job so was great the way we had to everything points towards a local company that I think is going to do a spectacular job out there so great to see at the end of the project this come to fruition songs to the end of the project I'm here to talk to you about the beginning of the end we are very close to concluding your referendum projects obviously there was a big push this summer I've been here and talk to you about the summer Blitz of work at sis and also the Arts and Science building I'm happy to report that those does that summer work went to well there were some bumps along the way and it was a bit of a panic at the very end to get everything done and and open but that was that was largely successful the Arts and Science building has been turned off that was a one major component to that wasn't done at beginning of school and that was to install the chiller which of course produces Goldwater for the air conditioning I'm happy to say that we we currently believe that that'll get to turned over fired up in the operationalised at the end of this week so good news there at the intermediate school week we knew that there was a big chunk works it was going to get done over the summer that did get done there are still a one-and-a-half phases left and a shifted some things around on the phasing plan that initially was set out for sis but work in the locker rooms did get underway during the summer but will continue on into the third week of September here and then the final phase of the classroom work will get started that point in at the relatively modest phase and that will get turned over in October so as we focus on the end of a 65 million-dollar referendum project numerous buildings and gets about 77 buildings are our Focus has managers of the project really change your we've come to you when we talked in terms of large dollar amounts in 101.5 million dollars that I had some fire protection at elementary schools and we talked about other things that we can do along the way but we always in terms of big chunks of money are our discussions now discussions that I have with Heather really on a weekly basis now get down into those tens of thousands of dollars we're really looking at a finite amount of resources left in a couple weeks will be talkin about hundreds of dollars right where we continue to be in a favorable position in the big picture with respect to the the overall referendum project the budget summary that's who was included in your packet that's largely unchanged that that shows are very very small contingency balance in there that does recognize that we have a some components of work that we added late in the project that are worst that are still on hold but they show is placeholders in our budget so that that is essentially considered spent but some of those are sort of our where are released out right now if for some reason we ran into some something terrible in the last phase of sis or or or or something else along the way we have the opportunity to pull back on some of those a dish call Abid scopes at work so I feel very very confident that the project will operate within the budget and as you know we've gone from a very very favorable bid day way back in March 2020 to the point where we've been able to look at some other work to add to the project along the way so any it continues to be a good good story financially some of the other things that we talked about our there's just a bunch of features of closing out a project you we get a lot more scrutiny of the locations that come in its we will soon be returning the retainage that we have so along the way in the project we retain a certain amount of money so you have a pocket of money giving you some leverage in case we have somebody that failed to perform in the latter portions of the job will not now slowly start to pay that retainage out so we look at it very closely and make sure that the is in a good position financially as we close out we look at very closely at whether or not there are some contractors that have placed liens on your property because they might be in dispute with they might be a second. a sub they might have a dispute with the subcontractor that is one tier above them and that might result in a lien on your property so we we we make sure that you have clear title before we make final payments on the project another thing is if you want you obviously operate in a community and we have authorities having jurisdiction that it focused on the project building inspector fire department and they come in periodically throughout our project and give us a conditional occupancy permit so all along the way as we have turned over at Water Lake Bluff different buildings on that the high school campus we have received conditional occupancy permit it's not until the end of the project where we get a full occupancy permit and the if they look at that has one last opportunity to say are there sayings with respect to the code that they're not completely satisfied with so we have to go back and we have to review any any comments that they have a long way we got a letter from he recently we were in the process of reviewing that and seeing what is things that the project has responsibility for and things things that it doesn't so those are the kinds of activities that we focus on at the end of the job. the construction activity really starts to diminished but it is a spike in the project Administration activity on the job so that's where we are although we'll let at some point declare the project done and all the trucks will leave in the storage containers that are on your site will get get removed and it will very much look like it's done financially the project will have a life likely for another 6 months it'll it'll probably be 6-months from now before we which settled out all the financial aspects of the job and well well my company will have much less the presence on the site will continue to stay engaged for for managing helping the district manage that and that Financial process really until everybody is satisfied in the last dollars a payday loan that's so all I have to report today my kids were talking I was just reflecting as I usually do when your hair and how glad I am that we have you on the board when we decided to have an owner's representative and ended up with you and as you know we've had you know pretty much full turnover of our administrative team and you know it was at the time like a choice between just saying okay I've been seeing like add this to your full-time job and those people aren't even here anymore so for many many reasons but also purchased you're always you're very thorough reports and just your willingness to test it with any questions we have I'm just super appreciative of you and wanted to say that what we really close out so super glad that we have had you here for this journey and I'm a with not only products that is important to the community but with an organization that you really like and enjoy being with him for what his checked all those boxes so thank you I just asked a question punch list so I guess it sounds like hey by the way this thing didn't happen like you know they painted this room and now I know the  YRC or like how how are you getting kind of feedback on that and what's like the timeline for something like that like you know if something happens in March or wheat like is there a drop that like we're done and I'm doing the same thing as a process that happens through throughout a phased construction development so we've been doing punch list at Water Lake Bluff it in multiple phases of turnover and just logistically how that happens is the architect a representative from Myron and a representative from my company call all all do together and they create the punch list together right Myron is responsible for addressing all of the items that are on the punch list occasionally they will dispute some of those items and say that way the part of the plan you might want to do that but wasn't part of the plan to move Alex that right but a list gets generated and it says these are the things that are not in compliance with the plans and specifications or we just feel it is less than quality piece of the delivery those get recorded and and then they address those in bearably if the list long we have to go back and we have to look at what happened during the punch list prices sometimes you're bringing four or five different trades and to a specific area to dress punch list and you're going to damage something else on the way so we have to go back in and look at those punch list again I thought we had a very good process at at water in Lake Bluff where we did multiple punch list went back review that they got complete but then once the staff came back into the building Tony sedita and in his staff helped have sort of a depository of comments from all of the staff and in the building to say G how come I don't have this dancer might be well that was a part of the project or the answer might be while you're right we missed that thanks we put it on the punch list right similar prices we are going through a similar process systematic sis right now and we'll have to do the same thing at the high school but when we sign a certificate of substantial completion that is where the architect owner and the contractor sign off and say your work is substantially complete here we list what is not complete so substantially is not completely complete so we have to list on that certificate what is not complete and so a punch list with a specific date would be listed on that that certificate and eventually when that all gets completed we have another certificate that we can get issue it says you completely complete this is the scope of this huge but in my experience of selling brand new construction often there's somewhat of an I think you might have been referring to this somewhat of an umbrella of for example like in a condo you have nail pops coming out of drywall that that would be covered for like up to a year I guess I'm asking like what what's what does that look like do we have coverage once that certificate find is there an umbrella that addresses items like you know minor items like that and do come back and address those imitation that our contractors have to turn over to this is what's called an operations and maintenance manual and warranty documentation so the former gives you instructions on different materials and how you're supposed to etc etc the ladder that the warranty describes what your warranty is for specific products or specific work they got put into place in general we have a 1 year warranty on workmanship so if there is this group or other things like that you know you light fixtures there's a certain percentage of light fixtures that are just going to fail often so that gets covered in the warranty within that 1 year warranty. It's really not a lot of debate on it right unless it is something that maybe that was the user they occupy a range that that would be where the debate with I after the one-year warranty is a lot more to me now if you look at a roof you might get a 20 year warranty on the roof that got put down if you look at the other windows that go in there might be a longer-term warranty on that but a lot of things expire at one year so one of the features we will accomplish it from Project Administration is it we a warranty walk at 11 months out so whenever the last certificate of completion is issued with we'll pick a day at 11 months out to say we're no warranty walk just so we don't have I want administrator over here that knows there's a problem but it didn't quite get back to the whole group week if it's a time for us to collect all of the inputs a we got a month left here we're going to submit a warranty claim on that soul that that's your protection there thank you thank you cleaning with one of them are there any that we've had two eliminates knotless that we talked about there were some items that I think we had and I can't remember who this was back in April that was communication with you that that we had on the list that we have not yet Advanced is the external facility side of at water is that one the garage the storage garage and do that water in Lake Bluff so that that remains on the budget we haven't released it yet right there was another one windows at the power that we haven't replaced yet still remains in the budget but we haven't released that work yet one last comment I will forever be mad at you for filling in the pit well if you ever will through there in a wheelchair you'll probably be happy with it no it was real estate we needed to read it was a special spot the other questions before we move on to the if do we get a copy of it though cuz I don't I don't know I'm not being ghosted on your agenda but the actual attachments sorry about it side effects only how do you act on it what is Heather hasn't so this particular one does not well it will come to you in a change so no we don't have it as a change order document yet so what we're not actually asking me the district to sign it yet we're out a little bit ahead of that it's not an action item whether true or not true yeah don't let me let me work my way into this this way different than some of the other change orders that we executed previously so when we get to issue spare $180,000 at sis and $40,000 at the high school specifically Arts and Science so Myron's contract way back when at the time of signing a guaranteed maximum price was released back in March of 2020 had embedded within it in contract contingency and because all of your projects are Renovations that in contract contingency was a fairly sizable number we have a we have a different price really by building within within the Shorewood projects and we track in contract contingency also by building along the way we've done at Water we've done Lake Bluff we've done the Key Arena building down the auditorium the admin building all operating within those in contract contingency number there's been a little bit of skip Danielle maybe we went a little bit over on admin so we took some money from the auditorium but those were really minor washouts of final accounting on those building but now we get to Sis and arts and science and we've burned through that in contract contingency we've discovered a number of things one of the bigger things that we discovered it as if I ask is that every ceiling we opened up we found electrical installations that were not code compliant so we really had to rewire a lot of those faces and that wasn't an anticipated part of the job so each week we evaluate all the new things that could describe and we use that in contract contingency now the good news is from a master project budget and point we have owner contingency for which Myron has no access to write not in there, it's all on the way you've made some decisions to say hey there's extra scopes of work for which we want to take some of that owner contingency we want to put it in my ribs bucket right we've all understood that now here we are that we were not coming to you asking for G do you want to do this extra School we're just saying we've done the day-to-day stuff that has now taken us beyond that in contract contingencies take a little bit of money from your bucket we need to put it in my rings scope to add to that in contract contingency so that's why it is a little bit different than other change orders there's a process I won't bore you with the the the whole process but there's what they call a potential cost impact weekly review potential cost impacts and I signed over our team agrees that the price is right and we understand what they the issue is so I have already signed a potential client impact for shipping $180,000 and the $40,000 at Arts and Science pci's and collected and they come to Heather for her signature we we just kind of had this threshold where we said just to a bigger point Echo talk to the board about it so that's what we're here for that make sense 180 + 4180 + 4220 could you repeat that into the mic so the only action I do will be to utilize owner contingency funds to increase Myron's contract amount in the amount of $220,000 sorry I wanted to confirm like this is time sensitive well I mean I guess it is time sensitive a lot of this is work that Myron has already engaged in Paris it's the the big rush at the end of the summer so they'd like to get paid for it so in that respect is time-sensitive approved 220000 from Leona contingent from the on a contingency fund to my room I'll take a second any further p.m. a Levi and 8 in a patient notes program I second another tell us more okay so just a little c*** for those of you that we do this every year but I know that it's new for our newer board members so the district receives a particular property tax payments as well as payments from the state at specific time a lump sums throughout the year because we maintain our fund balances pretty tight and pretty small we don't have enough cash to carry us through Arlene or my sisters are expenses continue at an even pace throughout the year but our money that comes in to pay our expenses comes in at some point after we've already occurred the expense so for the past several years the district has borrowed money to kind of slow. Basically floating ourselves alone until we get our in particular are property taxes in payments in from the village and for the last few years we've participated in a pool with a handful of other districts that is managed and put together by p.m. a who also Met has managed our bond financing for us so what day do I work with someone from their team and we look each year in August at what we expect our cash flow to look like taking into account our budget and anything that might be upcoming that we know that I'm kind of lumpy expenses and we put together cash flow directions and look at what's our low point and then they give us an approval on a maximum amount that we can borrow and then you don't work with them to decide on the amount one thing that's a little just so that although the note is written for 4.75 million because of the it's a kind of an accelerated timing the apma will give the attorneys in number that time like I'm a high-end of what we may actually be approved for so the actual amount on our that will be borrowing and that we've in our documents is 3.7 million when we look at our cash flow I got a little anxiety because we are at a low point at 3.4 million under without any cash or borrowing so on a budget of 30 million dollars at 300,000 concussion is a little small so I have also so in addition to the 3.7 million borrow that were asking you to prove tonight just as an FYI if you're not surprised I'm going to be coming back in 2 weeks with every shot North Shore Bank and asked if they could do a lot of credit for us which is very low cost impact for us if we don't have to use it it's kind of like a insurance policy so just you know so that your business Rodger can't sleep at night they'll be providing I received notice today that they their longevity is approved us for 1.5 million so we'll have just a little bit additional you know if something happened if we need it to kind of get through those leaner month but today what were looking for is approval for the 3.7 million dollars are technically up to 4.75% I just have a quick question that line of credit I mean that's largely for I don't know if this all of these issues are like unintended like expenses or do we think that we actually could dip into that I mean so we're at you know that our margin is like $300,000 at a low point in what it is normally like if we're if we're pacing ahead because we're getting expenses in you know sooner than we thought or like or not like if you're pacing ahead you know that's something that I'm going to be looking at and I would try not to dip into that unless absolutely necessary. Usually payroll I mean that to be the situation in which I would borrow otherwise we just be cuz it's really pretty short time. That were waiting for our tax payment how to set number compared to pre yours is it a little bit higher than last year we were just over three million last year I grabbed the last several and there's some that are higher or lower to pick it's right in there thanks any other questions I wanted to say that I'm glad we're continuing to work with p.m. and that plan program it seems like it has been really valuable things to Diamonds you for continuing on so I have a motion and a second favor I motion carries by Sarah thank you baby sleeping okay so we have to monitor reports for tonight on the first one is only three which is treatment as District stakeholder or sorry caregiver students and staff and I'm going to turn it over to Joanna Kayla Optimus Communications is my forte so before we start with OE 3 I just wanted to make a quick note of the changes from last year always three and always seven were very similar and there's a ton of overlap with the same indicators so we switch that change them to make more useful reports 00 E3 is specifically focused on monitoring our families caregiver students and staff so loud residents and outside public is always seven soda given review on oe3 we looked at how families caregiver students and Staff feel they are treated by the district so is 3.1 and 3.2 looked at protecting confidential information and place in grievances so to summarize quickly there were no authorized releases of confidential information this year there was one formal complaint that resulted in legal action and any of the formal complaints or received are handled by the student services department and filed as needed in the office of civil rights non-discrimination report always three is probably what I can speak to Beth since a lot of that applies to my position and that revolves around effective And Timely communication so looking at the data the biggest positive we saw was pretty much across-the-board survey results show that satisfaction had increased with I'm district and school Communications during the past year in comparison to the previous year there's been a lot of progress on how the district connected with families and house. Connected with families so you can see all those percentages in the report I also did quite a few data digs on the feedback based on race ethnicity gender and those other available identity groupings and it was nice to see that there weren't any significant differences in responses to satisfaction between those groups so that was another positive and then another interesting thing that I saw was the preferences change slightly for how are the constituents like to submit and receive information so email has always been number one and continues to be number one I think it was like 91.6% of District constituents email as the top way but 23 change so last year District website and newsletter where the number two and three and this year it is a parent-teacher conferences and comp station with teachers and administrators I thought that was spinning as we returned to full in person learning and so those preferences change and then we also I also saw that outside of the survey just in the responses that we got through our district portals we had a lot less questions just through the online and then as notification indicator for it was great to see a high percentages of families had positive interactions with staff and feel come welcome in the school communities when I look through all this data some of the main points of focus or I think District administration is going to be one to continue to concentrate on quality emails to family staff like I said it's by far the most preferred way and making sure constituents know how they can provide feedback an example is one thing I've made sure now on all of Ric emails you can't respond to the if you server so I always make sure there's an owner to the document at the bottom and like is Peru sends out a board meeting report I always put her email at the bottom so they can respond and then another point of focus is I'd be really with the with bringing back with one person wearing in people wanting these face-to-face interactions providing a lot of more face-to-face opportunities for families and students so I know quit taking a less prominent role I'm hopefully in my department we can encourage and promote more of these opportunities for families and then based on the data I think there are some improvements that can be made pacifically with Communications between District staff and our school staff a point of focus for me will be working on increase District Communications to the school and then intern the schools increase Communications to their staff their newsletters and hopefully that will assistant you know increasing the percentage of Staff who don't feel they're being kept informed or don't think the district is as responsive to their and then lastly I just wanted to provide an update on the district's website accessibility so as Leo continues to be on top of it with accessibility features but the website can still use some work on the content that was added before those features came on sadly out so we partnered with monsido their company that does websites and they do free scan for that specifically why we use them at the beginning so I had a free scan of the website done where they stand about 5% of our website and their reports show that the majority of our content with accessible but there are things like old photos that didn't have all text so unfortunately the quote that I got to do a website. It was around 6 or 7 km which is not budgeted for this year but so for the time being I'll use that feedback from the Scandal start going over at the Y State and making changes so they most of it is old photos and dumb closed captioning on old videos so that's just kind of an overview human an open for questions or feedback on. So you guys have for the upcoming year and what I can help incorporate into our Communications I guess I can stay I think it's your department and having an extra key here is really I think improved a lot of kind of like the processes and like the like having regular Communications which I think is great I think it helps for people to kind of know like I'm going this is what I'm going to get this kind of information how do you say Department but I think that there's also then like the one of the things that I can say probably all five of the school board members I'm sure is that there's just too much communication balance but I'm wondering if you have thought a little bit about ways in which to provide either streamlining an event or ways in which is easier for people you know I won't name names but people who don't read their email you know they got like okay so what did I miss yeah and one of the things I brought up this helps with staff I'm feeling more informed but I think me working with the principal goes to for a bunch of the district initiative then having the principals at their own take on it to school newsletters it's kind of the same message and all the news letters and on the website and you know on social media I I try to maintain the same message for my stuff but I think that policy the cracks with the schools themselves when they take on. Communication responsibilities so that's one of one of my goals for this year I agree in taking notes you know I just find that routine Communications helps is when like the village weekly memo on Thursdays and now I have had kids in different schools and I get a Thursday week late so now I'm Prime look for things on Thursday and I think that's helpful for new families and caregivers and sometimes we get things on different days and I think that that would be a nice priority is to keep doing that until there's already initiated behind do you guys check the village managers memo I do. Okay we're kind of like in the Middle where the middle of the cut off but I had asked before we could be moved up with Tyler Burkhart and he said no but now there's a new person getting medical assistance so I may try it ask again yeah they ask when you talk to the Village how many of the village residents received a lot of my friends that hey stop asking me for a long time but made some changes to their website to to make the village manager more accessible I know I was part of a marketing initiative that kind of fizzled but the last five years they've been working on that I think I'm it had a question or comment so as the district communication specialist I will assume that you're behind the operations of our district social media accounts extract okay I would just like to be a comment and jobs take note of the the really effective communication and I've notice has been pushed out in the past past two years especially the past year a lot of really great communication but another thing I would like to add are you familiar with like ours the word Athletics social media accounts so yes that is Garrett trubisky I think it does that yeah he's the assistant he does a great job. Give me a call I'll talk to him I just have some I'm so I have some questions about them but I don't think they're necessarily related to Tamina oh yeah yeah so I'm looking through each of them or we have compliant and not complain I don't know if this time but mindful of the experiences since I've been on bored and I really recall some of the last Equity conversations that we've had and frustrated at our response and so I want to make sure that somehow shows up that we are ready I seen that we still have work to do and making it's that people can submit complaints and and that they know the process on how to and the follow-through and I don't I can't say that I know exactly the areas may be needing attention but I feel like overall I heard that that wasn't point of attention thanks for the volume that I just heard are you thinking of like family members kind of not knowing where to go or like I said I'm thinking of death but I I'm picking up stuff but then I'm also thinking of us and how to work on CERN about not knowing the outcome we've heard a couple of things that said like we can get to shore up some of our complaint process is related to discrimination and harassment. this form this is talking about formal complaints that I received better than legal action. Blah blah blah blah any formal complaints are handled by explains it if we don't get it it's pretty hard to take any action so what you're suggesting is something else having to do with how do we get the message out to people that win it's a distinction between a formal complaint in trying to have something resolved right so somebody stole my lunch and I'm really mad about it what do I do about it or somebody called me a name and this is a form of planes about that how does that get resolved and I think what you're describing is at a different level than what these are stop and then there's I can process for metal I complained so if so I think in terms of our own separate students so are we three can I hear would include stopping and like family students actually discriminated against the other thing I would add is like we we talked about this cuz I think it came out crash like before I was on the board I think I wasn't even with work on this came up with it there's like a single concern our complaints portal a little spot where if you kind of don't know where to go it directs you I think initially and Caitlin I'm sure remember this better than I do but like initially there was this like long flowchart and people like that would do that like you know like I just want to tell you nothing and you don't make me navigate your maze like you navigate The Maze I'll tell you what's going on and so it kind of was so kind of have a better butt down and right away your name your email what your concern relates to and then these keywords go specifically to the administrators that would be responsible for answering those concern was reported at us like those we would get those sorry I just couldn't find it. So I'll find it I think it was cut in half by last year's I know that I think it was around 80 something in last year was 130 something anyway we can always think of new ways to like make it easier for all parties but wanted to display contacts for like where it sits and that always and then also that I guess what I would say in response to that is I think in the past year we have is part of our office of civil rights compliance we have put everywhere that we can think of where to go in terms of if you have if you want to file a formal complaint we don't send an email that it isn't out and but I think that we're we're still trying to get better is what do we do before it gets to that point right and I think that's where we're working to get better and I know sis is working really hard on that this year as part of that is we took that to heart and I think that's the piece that were working on but in terms of your where do people file a complaint it couldn't have to be honest in my estimation could be any clearer in terms of that but I think the piece as I said that is what are we doing about at the lowest level for resolution in that respect it's not so it thinking of like our scope of really looking at accountability for the district and what are board indicate alright I can see that our board indicators are largely at a high level like Asian and are we following office of civil rights my brain is in this this is at the school district level however handling things and I get that if we have these indicators were not compliant that it means that there's likely sings below or either something really bad happen or there's like three things at that lower level that we need to look at clothes it's one of those items we are non-compliant it so I think that that lends itself to us really like continuing to create a a place where we're working through plants and Reporting and within so that it doesn't lend itself to that litigation I'm so sorry that is a goal and it is happening and where we're trying to work really hard and happening at the lower levels and at the school's is where that blunt until Friday come back next year we'll still see something very similar to because this the way these were written was to do a formal complaint we're not going to get we're not asking for things that are handled through resolution restorative justice circles that that could be very well going on and it doesn't rise to this level and we're hoping they are, it might be someone to take away to either a retreat or just taking up the ugly you know individually at a teacher so we were talking about the other day like when we when we want to make changes to a laser results policies he had in the past I sat down in like with the administrators or staff members and hostile at all the potential changes we move forward and doing that in meetings but I think like a back. I'd be an item for discussion so that's good too. Cuz I I do tend to agree like we don't really capture like a lower level in formal complaint in the 08 a part of what we might discuss like we take it up again is like where should not live like should that actually just be adjusted in District policy cuz that's sending for it is today or is it a boy thing like do we want some sort of Eva annually that like we're being effective at that because I don't I don't know what that would indicate her would be so that's the kind of thing we could bring back and talk to you. They probably be in perception two people like sitting out their complaints are being responded to a nerd but they know how to submit a complaint I think I will give you bring this back when we have our other and we may just I know we don't want to do any of that because we already have policies and things that we put into place different level in our administrators and staff are working on that that's what they charged to work yet yeah I guess I would add as you know I think but I heard you talk about Becky when she think is right is that there's like the word complaint I think it's complicated versus being responsive to concerns and we do expect that to happen I mean but honestly I mean that your example of what you were talking about it Sis that to me is like concerns to bring up and then we expect there to be a response to it the question then I guess is like I mean, like it gets complicated when you start thinking about like well what's the concern right like you know you guys know we get a lot of emails nothing doing it you know four times so it's like I don't know like what that was like you know and I think we could think of him but I'm not saying we should have think about it because I do think that to Jo-Ann's Point all the stuff that we're doing to avoid getting to this level is important and it's been hard work that the has done and it's been really effective because we haven't actually had a lot of formal complaint so I think I don't know I think it's something that we should think about it I haven't just a very slight this isn't that a question not a question so at the very top of the page it says I have a treatment under the sentence location of the superintendent where their Spectre operations answer now any other discussion I actually have been a commotion so but any other discussion for me and I'm guessing he doesn't have it but I'm going to guess that you were going to stay in compliance notice so I will take a motion to approve only three as provide are as provided on September 13th 2022 in compliance audit exceptions any further discussion no favor I motion carries five girls I'm back for the outside so for this Oe 7.1 is my position primarily revolves around and that's developing the annual Communications plan so that includes the two-way communication between the district and outside Communications calendar and the goals I to the Strategic plan so if you'll look over the attachment there's a communication plan attachment do you have that I got it and at the top it has the communication our Communications Vision our primary objective are targeted audiences maybe Terry can put to link up yeah I didn't get that right and I don't get some more books I think it's on board books if you scroll down under are we 7 point yeah oh yeah sorry if you scroll down to board indicator one evidence there's a link to District house unlink to Communications land sorry I know you haven't been I think yeah she put it up so the top like I said has the Vision Communications Vision my primary objective targeted audiences and then before we get into like the ongoing strategic plan initiatives for the communicator we have a section that's key new work and that's what I'm trying to achieve in the Communications Department for the 2023 school year so sitting down with Doctor stirring to use the Strategic plan as a guide to see where I can make the most difference with Communications and we came up with three goals for the upcoming school year when you can see one as the marketing plan to is equity in action series and 3D is alumni Arena engagement thanks for pulling that up go back down down part of key new work so it's split between those two pages and maybe a little bit no no no no no no so I got something I'm really had a chance to look over this I'll go through it a little more in detail so the first piece the three goals is a marketing plan I'm sober using new marketing strategies and you want to engage the non-district families while maintaining and building pride in The District in order to increase enrollment so I kind of have each goal open down by actions that can be led by me and deliverables so it's a marketing plan so the marketing plan a big thing would be completing RFP process to hire a marketing firm to assist with creation you know of a branding campaign kind of the Y Shorewood and Concepts and design maybe between some behind some new marketing I don't know if I should give you guys a second to look over I keep talking with marketing firm and production of new just going on my marketing materials or a detailed plan outlining some you know tactics for a campaign and then the third one is production of an annual report their annual Bulletin the equity in action. So Terry Tucker and I have kind of already started that we're two months then but you know we're trying to deepen and broaden the ICS work not only within and playgroups but out in the broader community and a school so some of those action I've created flyers for this new series will feature a new staff member every month across all the schools and how they're applying the ICS work to their position so the measurements action of the monthly flyer at the flyer of your ship and then also making sure we have a staff member representation from each one a wide variety of departments so that's actually I really enjoy this initiative it's been great to learn about each of the staff members in and I've gotten positive feedback from community members about this already got some emails that they're like this is what we wanted to see how we're really applying at ICS and then the third a goal is kind of the alumni re-engagement a lot of the alarm my work was lost during the covid-19 pandemic and trying to expand our engagement with alumni and strengthening that's it so I'm hoping that this year we can bring back the tradition of Excellence award cuz that's a great event and we had to table that cuz of covid and then just working with the Alumni Association to increase the reach active alumni newsletter if you really need some help with the Alumni Association I don't even know if you have an alumni president right now we're looking for one so that's something that I could do help I'm spreading the word of that cuz I'm I'm creating alumni newsletters quarterly but you know I'm doing it on my own without any alumni input still hopefully it's going well and then I also run an alumni alumni social media pages so I try to anything that I think would apply to alumni post on those pages and then we don't love my newsletters I run through and then driving on alumni reunions events that's another thing you know I could use help with spreading the word that I give all the alumni reunions tours there's been quite a few that have come back this summer I think there's going to be eight and total that will have I even 1 this morning the class class a 65 year reunions is this Friday and they wanted it to her today so that's just another action 100 that you can see just some of in my position ongoing strategic initiatives and I broke them back down into three different categories to District parents and families Communications and then the internal Communications meeting teacher staff school board and then community outreach meaning Village residents and outside community so those are things that you know currently doing and want to continue to do a lot of that work will stay the same but each year hopefully we'll have Keenan working and goals for the year and then I also have the communications, which doesn't go into every single thing I post on social media or like website but it goes over the big events promotion of those things you know when we have elections again when we when we have to post for tradition of Excellence when seed has big events that they need me to stay on top of or when we have recognition weeks like scope art appreciation week in that type of thing so the communications calendar it adjusts somewhat so the dates are not set in stone but it's a good guy I'm in men so then moving on getting back to the 08 indicators I just quickly want to touch on indicator two and three which asks the outside public and how they feel about communication from the district so when these indicators were created it we were so focused on families and school Community is being part of that percentage so you'll see that around 45% of these questions do not apply to them so then I went back to look to see if that was like weird that that big of a percentage they didn't apply but since the survey started its historically been between 40 to 50% that said questions don't apply to them so I just want to throw that out there so it's something we could think about for next year just what the right indicator is you know if you want to keep it that way so we are not not compliant and I'm in terms of people that were disappointed with the communications there's it's around 20 something doesn't take out the people who say it doesn't apply to them like what we've done is yeah I have them in the act and I don't think there's a way with school perceptions to like take that out right. Maybe that's all I can I got the survey or the other thing I'm thinking cuz it does look like they just perceive that it doesn't apply to them if they're like a member of the public or I took it as a community member. some questions that don't mean you don't have a meeting is different you know when we ought to be able to say doesn't apply to division, so the question is does the district provide channel for input and feedback and we would want to know that for any person is getting that I actually wrote a comment that then maybe this indicator needs to be Revisited so that we can track how many people say it doesn't apply and it could be my thought process was of those people do say it applies like are they satisfied or dissatisfied we are doing or not doing well not collecting accurate data because of how the question from Community people and that's that's that's difficult right or I wondered to look like it's possible to change the question so that it has a sentence before the question or a series of questions that says like our goal should be able to reach any of those resident regardless of whether they even have a connection to the district personally given that you know what just to make it clear like this is about you even if you don't have kids and you're not a teacher in Reno September we'll take a look at that and work with school perceptions and bring back a draft before the survey this year ways that we try to engage you like I don't know our Communications are well then just the last section always I'm going to focus on preparing a publishing the annual presentation in budget materials for the annual meeting and those reports by dr. Stern can I'd rather have alone can be found on the district's website I did want to know in case you didn't see at the communications plan like I said we do have a goal of introducing an annual bulletin at the beginning of next summer dr. Stern key started one during her time in pojoaque and she thought I was very successful so we scheduled that into our Communications plan for the upcoming year and then we can share some of that annual bulletin information again in next year's annual meeting you wanted to having them to that had one, first of all I want to just call out the equity and action piece just that that's fantastic and really responsive to conversations but I think came up in board meetings and I keep communicators and just all different kind of contact so thank you for that and I'm glad to hear it's getting positive responses speaker that is me and I think if the feedback you got was that's what we wanted to see it is but I heard that question and I think just over and over again is like how does it look in the classroom but the part 2 of that usually was what does it mean for teachers having the staff like share their own words what it means for them is super powerful and better than anything we could stay at the board meeting so thank you thank you the communication plan communication and marketing plan at South it's totally what I had in mind I think last year when you're the brewport it out you and I pretty much just had a calendar which is a lot and I know you're just 1% so this totally exceeded what I thought we might get this year did they clear yeah yeah so and most importantly it's tight like what I was hoping to see is just how our communication priorities stem from Egypt priorities and you totally did that so thank you for all that the only got that I see is one that sort of be understandable cuz I think it's some of it's been more recent and that is I don't know where this lives in 20 years does but we just had a bad so many conversations about the need for like one page that holds budget and finance information for the public so yeah and so I don't know if crafting Bad Axe Jeremiah and we've also put some things up on the finance stewardship page in response but we still do need an infographic or something that is just clear and we'll be working on that as part of the answer okay I just didn't see it in the plan and I figured maybe you're working on it so I more I wasn't you I was going to ask if it is a marketing firm helping with that or no is that not we didn't have that because that smart I think Martha Brannon choir singing enrollment driven because it wasn't in the plan like where it was living in for me like that's that's a really high priority communication me and so I just wanted to ask about that some really happy to hear that's underway already doing November so awesome thank you I saw the same thing here at the top of the screen and in the text. Can I ask what the marketing I know I'm assuming it's not too bad we budgeted for it either would have said no otherwise firm that works with a school district I don't feel like we were set on that marketing yeah thing when it was the Village School District in the bed and it was like a very different kind of thing like can you just talk a little bit about like how you found we haven't found them yet so that's part of our discussions we have a meeting scheduled later this week to start mapping that out and that we have a few recommendations for marketing firms that work with others districts that are going to talk with but we're kind of still deciding whether that's in the form of actual marketing materials or more up like a campaign that we then create them. oh I'm sorry that was a different branding and see what other districts are doing and then you know have a department of one from any of that our department and so is always trying to balance like you know like I loved the idea of doing I like the idea of doing this big marketing campaign but I also think like takes all that work then like what does that entail what does that look like past the time that they're Consulting with us or whatever yeah we hire them and so and like I said I didn't know of I didn't know there were marketing firm that works Pacifica School District can a combination quite candidly I know we have two that have expressed interest that are more educational focus and then we'll also look beyond that as well are there any in any discussion about possibly collaborating with the village on a branding marketing piece that we're talking about enrollment we're talking about making people move here and that's that's living in our village that's our community could that could we collaborate on some level to do something like that ever consider is it possible it's really good idea and we've not considered it from an expense standpoint and he had a really good consideration in terms of what our overall amps are which our enrollment driven and which really has a direct contact that way I'll be to the vet John that it would save each of these and I'll reach out for the village on that where it's worth looking around the elbow you know I have a couple, so I think it's more for us as a boy maybe work on is I'm really looking at this with the clothes I for the first time and are always seven references towards the end no significant differences in responses we don't have an indicator that first teeth the overall Elise what does a map down into the board indicators always but yeah it would be probably good and then I was really getting in so let me just find it really quick 7 on to a cell you it would be have data indicating student progress towards results policies and I went in that back to the results policies and but as well kind of figure out like what are those metrics in our our results policies metrics lining with our annual report so I know we record out on the forward examine the annual report and has great District strategy but some of our metrics are our fastbridge and other things and I feel like like we're going to feel like that needs two probably men they're like we need to talk through what are the metrics that we want to be able to yet and sharing with the community and that it should connect if we're referencing the results here and the results are speaking of something different and can I come in town that I think it's worth more discussion because I'm not sure fastbridge would be a real useful piece in the in the annual report I think we need to look at larger metrics but I think my point on that is I'm not sure we want one-to-one correspondence between our results indicators and what would go in an annual report if we think about its intention I'm so I think we need to and I think there's a there's a discussion yeah it's going to be a new reference cuz I don't want to like inadvertently call something unintentional back in the classroom but Corey and then you know we've heard a lot and we informally talk to and I know doctors for cuticles of all of your new but really thinking about how is one thing but also that that great curriculum a thing that getting some of that on the website could be helpful for the only two under information about strategies programs and operations center I think we have some work to do so that we can have the the board indicators and I think remembering that this has to do with communicating with Village residents and public audience the information you don't want to do what we've done and other things we have too much information so we have time to send to all I'm understanding what that Village I want to use the right word Village residents and public audiences Beyond School District resident Lebanon School District people information about curriculum about in about budgets I agree about right I mean are the 7.2 it feels like instead of results policies we could just a strategic plan and that's when you know if we're talking about send like the annual meeting is great but also I think those three things I living on the website are probably I had some things that I know I would appreciate it and I think it's looking for that I was trying to keep my kid I'm like what should I be teaching you and so that's kind of when my brain alert it to it so and we have again as we align them what parents want and need this is what the older population wants and needs about the school district The Village to the school district website we need to think about how to drive them to the website and it do they really want to be driven to the website and is it navigable but they may be very interested and how do they read it and especially with all the education terms and languages we use we have be very sensitive to that and also not assume that they can't be driven to the website useable or usable these are things we'll be discussing the Arizona look at as we look at what is it mean to communicate with our Publix and and Market to our Publix they think you guys have any is there going to be a nun City for students to talk to while I guess we don't know yet but when we do this marketing plan highlights okay so I will take a motion to accept in compliance with no exceptions 7 communicating with Village residents and public audience for the September I tried to Ocean carries Caitlin and keep Communicator prescrip so I asked Carrie to put up on here what we did last year was kind of a good place to start so I guess a couple things for me I'd like to hear from the students about. They have like linkages and things you guys would be thinking about and from I think we need to decide and be realistic on how many we can get done in the semester realizing we do have the semester next semester the linkages that we didn't have that didn't happen around Autumn and so we can decide if those are priorities I guess I'll just stay right now the FDA is definitely a priority because we've been trying to schedule it and then wanted to wait until our new horned our new board members started and then you never put in the key Communicator so I'm open to ideas from admitting all of you about things to prioritize do we know we have not had student then we missed last I think that's yeah we didn't make it to do it in the spring so first question you're asking what you just need an implied it how many times is it person Easter is it per year in in so I mean I think we try to reach all these groups once per year you know I mean there could be groups that we reach twice a year like the pto's or schools I mean the students definitely could you know what else to say about the students is that I feel like maybe you guys have been to some of those linkages I think it's what I think challenges deciding like how did you know like how to get people there at lunch is obviously a pizza but then you know if there's other ideas that you guys have and you have to tell us now but I think it would be to have definitely shsn sis students and if you want to do like clubs or something like that that would be fine I was really impressed when I posted the the dip my meat the date of the runs for a candidate Forum thank you and they brought in people from all different clubs so that was kind of cool I don't know if that's an option so so I didn't for me like the FDA and like I said I think we want to get them the table and then either so we just like we've always either done the building leadership teams or we've done. Building games as well and then also parent groups buildings I like doing that I think that's like the one that has the most I got to eat I think it makes the most sense for us but you know that's already ate can we combine any of attention and with a new principal I think sis needs to be in there I don't know why do they have Emily Emily beagle that's it so I have a PTO it's not really a PTO it's a support group I don't think it's called the pgo friend about your past Elementary's okay so it maybe maybe as long as he under the sis like all of you all of that kind of into one would be a good idea so what is all of that bite LOL but the CEO building leadership I think we would probably do is that a I mean okay so I'll be back up on Wednesday that we've also in the past not restricted it to he remembers I mean I'm not really restricted all parents are invited. I mean by lumping but I could see combining your parents okay but yes we want to do these and we have to be mindful of how many how many other things were going to be doing in terms of around workload interviewing and things like that that are going to come up so as we're being and I feel about these need to be careful Remember the Titans go right so that's a little bit better sometimes it happened okay so yes to Bella and Emmett thinking about reaching students this semester and then. Trying is the plan to have one each side sure cuz I think that would be the best idea. He just first student sorry I've been not even speaking like the first lie for this student luggage meeting so I think it's important at least I'm a student and that fraud recipes made with certain complaints or something we're talking about kind of like difficult to see on our personal level so I think having another linkage meeting towards the end of the year whatever also recap on what has changed since the first one to be like what it be like Mr Kenny and two of the well you guys are man-made been probably and maybe a board member I mean you guys are also I feel like some of that a lot of the Tog wouldn't necessarily be born related so I can sure that if that is important related it's still being attended to, school level. call yeah I said a comment I think twice a year one during each semester would be definitely more beneficial just having one of the beginning of the school year like I see what's playing up on the board and what happened last year I think that providing amenities such as the the pizza is a good way to do you know get some attraction to that and I definitely agree with the idea of having some high school leaders there to like better Kenny or with Jamerson I think that a lot of the comments coming from the students will be for all related so for those to be attended to is pretty significant but my main point is I think that twice a year would be very beneficial you guys are the experts on how typical student calendar look like figure out when you think you could maximize attendance cuz we like if we try and do it will screw it up so you Lisa if you guys could coordinate with Carrie and penny for this building and then let's turn it off he is so awesome okay and then I have written down that we would ask Carrie to see if we could schedule parent meetings at all for school's leadership meeting leadership team meetings all for schools and the SCA that's a good goal and then forky communicators I was thinking of trying to schedule something beginning of October I wanted to see what help you how people feel about Wednesdays strong feelings one way or the other Wednesdays Wednesdays haircut yeah yeah I just have other boards that I have to deal with and I think when Wednesdays are good and then so I was reviewing I know Joanne is going to talk about this later but I was reviewing the swasa notes but I think I sent everybody this is our kind of organization that works with some Eastern Wisconsin schools and think about the comments that came from your anyway I'll see you maybe we should do something on legislative action there's going to be a lot of questions and I think there's a lot of opportunities for them to it has a lot of resources from the Wisconsin vacation public so just bring Christian and she could think about having probably to bring it home I think Heather would it be able to kind of talk about the impact here and then also we could get Christian but whatever we could think you're like to do it so I'll work with Carrie 25 I know October 5th is a holiday and so not October 5th anything else. it does right now. You feel like you have enough information awesome also this is a side I forgot to tell you to that I was at a village meeting by board and are you guys familiar with HRC the human relations Commission Daiso is a commission over there is a commission over it that's a village is a village committee that we have school board members on the vote for people who are interested in it so I might I have to send it to you guys and you guys maybe if you know people who might be interested oh well Molly I don't know I mean someone else like they do work on Equity work in a different lens we can play for a juvenile. Commission itself and its work and make it a center for work in the village and what the school board School District equity in so maybe there be books that you guys know that would be interested I think it's just once a month okay so is the superintendent search our feet so I asked at Joanna her team to put together an RFP for us a draft RFP so again the idea and here is that we would ask I Julie underwear tomorrow tomorrow Anna and Becky went to the Steve meeting notes on what is working on they are discussing preparation for their annual Campaign which includes mailers community and our previous numbers of seed and the network has already established as well emails throughout the district to District families and caregivers as well as community members and they're particularly focused on reaching out to new people in the district and also it wanted to share that they have a meet and greet at Skyline that's as well as they have time for Speed coming up and that they're finalizing dates for English or would meeting to do. give her a court on what we're up to and one of the things I let them know is that were exploring with the superintendent search as well as possibility for a referendum a lot of questions to be so helpful and in the house that way intertwines our works so more to come thank you any questions for Becky okay hi hi hello my name is Dawn Blackmore I live at 4240 North Ardmore Avenue I'm going to to start off by saying it's wonderful to see you in person and this means a lot me so that's why I stayed this long I want to welcome the new student Representatives you look a little tired and I'm not going to go on and on I do talk slow but I know I have 3 minutes and I'll stop tell me when tell me when we're all tired and I'll come back I'll come back I do plan on showing up this year I am concerned about so many things that I have to because I care about School and I want to welcome Happy And You Know I'm looking forward to see what I bring we need some new ideas and some action just Caitlin was talking about the bullet ant I'm going to just have you from a friend of mine in Whitefish Bay she still has it was mailed in the summer and I got it from her because she keeps them because they they do give an incredible amount of information you know when when you're talking Equity you know as a teacher I'm constantly thinking about it to me what it means is differentiation insert so we know you see that picture people looking at a baseball game and some need to see over the fence with different levels I kind of use the analogy of shoes everybody needs them everybody gets a pair but they're all different I might be like a comfort level so maybe like Emily gorgeous sandals with the espadrille style it's what you need you got what she need that's differentiation that's Equity not everyone will be driven to the website to see what's going on in the district something like that you will reach and you will differentiate and you will capture people that are having children right now and I thinking do I want to send my kids to Shorewood or not I don't really know anything about it when I did some work for some school board members campy and I did talk to people on behalf of not being of just the school board member but also just knowing as a parent what's going on and I met people strollers check didn't know anything about store would you know and and I told them what I knew but directed them you know I hate talk to these people here's their campaign literature they can feel you in like people don't know a lot so it's really really important to prioritize what's going to be the most effective and so I was absolutely thrilled to see that this would be something that maybe in the next year it's not looking just like that but something to work toward because we have to believe that we are going to improve and we have to believe we can do it and we have to do something and shows we are doing something to get better okay I sound really dramatic I know that I am kind of a dramatic person but I'm actually not exaggerating to you how concerned I am for the district in many ways academically I want you to know and I think Becky look to this my times probably almost up so I'll have to stay for the next public comment the third one I'm not kidding guys really there's so much I have to say but the board reports you can look if you want right now they're not updated so like I was looking at the R2 academic growth for numeracy that's the only one that's updated the other ones are from 2019 so that the language arts it was great for me to have the the background so I saw how dr. Davis did that include the forward and did openly communicate to the community exactly what is happening academically with our children and did lists a number of strategies a plan there's no follow-up so what I don't hear and what I want you guys to consider is when you have a no in front of you please go back to doing the workshop meetings where you figure out the words please take that off of if I watch the board meetings all through the pandemic I watch every board meeting it's taken me this long to learn what the OEM this is really difficult this is not really acceptable it's not easy to understand what you guys are doing but I think I get it a little bit and though he is our kind of your way evaluating the effectiveness of what the job you know the staff in the superintendent are doing you need to move though you need to move the work that you're doing about the words and you know what you want to include to those workshops and you need devote your time here to the students put them first every time every time and I have so many post it's here I'm not going to go do I love them I do want to say I had to find a so this is about this always 7 I did appreciate your discussion I'm so glad I was able to hear it communicating with Village residents public audience this is what this is about I could not get in tonight I had to walk around a couple times so I work I of like what you think might happen so that happens to me teaching to I know this very well I will the plan but you got to be Flex and I think I've seen you guys do this before we are like we're going to make a motion to move the public comments up cuz wow it's 10 or 3 and we have it for 8:50 right because they're you want to you want that communicate do you want to capture it so if people are staying up and they're still staying up and they're still staying up and then they just give up cuz I just got to get the bed you've got to be thinking you think about them first then you put them first and you make sure you capture what they have to say so just move it you know that's it that's really helpful for me as a parent like I'm looking like okay this public comment number one I'm condition and direction of the district the condition is the information about the organization's academic results honors award and recognition educational environment financial status and other aspects of the  District Health I am not adequately informed you guys and I looked and looked and searched and you know that cuz I emailed you can I find this where can I find that I look at other districts websites to learn about my website I mean learn about my district I emailed you that fast Box Point presentation if you're listening to this at home or is he look at this video later go to the fox point-bayside website you guys can do that to you at your computers go to the academics tab cook on the state report cards and click on the slide presentation for the Ford report that board received last November 20th 2021 and learn about our district from that because that's really important information as a teacher I will tell you you need triangulate your data you need a lot of assessment but a standardized summative assessment like the forward is gold because that's measuring student knowledge Summit Play Show Me What You know and it's it's designed to match up to grade level proficiency you need to be getting as many students as you can to grade level proficiency and if you see that drop you need to and those those kids need your help and you need to come in and you need to do something about the proficiency getting smaller and smaller you'll see this in third grade we start out with 73% efficient but I am there an 8th grade it's more like a third of students 31% of students are efficient talking about math so it's a third grader you guys are 73% proficient or Advanced which is actually fabulous it's about kind of more than I expect as a teacher like this is amazing that's an amazing reflection on those elementary teachers they're pouring their hearts out to get to that and then by the time you get in the 8th grade and I'm sure you guys have a lot to say about it yes I'm really interested by the time you get to eighth grade only in this is the last two years 2019 and 2021 will see how 2022 Falls it's been 31% to 32% was in 2019 and then 2021 at fell just like one point that did not happen in other districts so you got to do what you guys got to do is you really you can't sail this ship in the dark you need data you need presentations that give you everything everything I don't know what happened I can't remember I don't know why there's no forward present open from last year we need to bring it back use that Fox Point presentation as as the something that's hard to tackle or two want to believe it's a function of this or that but I think that facing reality is in every situation you know all of us in our lives is the most powerful thing we can do because we can't really address something unless we were able to look at it and get comfortable with it be curious about it and I really liked that comment. Thanks Julie any other public comments superintendent report good evening everyone I'll keep this rather brief some of the items in the superintendent's report we've already missed but I would like to thank everyone for the positive start to the school year it's really been a great start it feels good to be back in person and just not feel so heavy about everything as we move forward with K that snap to say that we don't have covid protocol or managing and monitoring that I'd like to encourage families to make sure that you are reporting covid cases staff as well because that's how we can keep our community safe I do select to remind people that covid testing is still available in the morning and after-school in the arena and to Avail yourself of that as bad as a way to test that we really are making sure that we're doing everything we can to keep our school Community safe which is important I'd also like to give a shout out to our it team to work very very hard and diligently to deploy are Chromebooks amidst a very busy time of the year and also work with our staff on go-kart and make sure that we are having safe use of them that has been a big feet and I'm really proud of the work that's been done that way a little bit redundant and I'm not going to spend a great amount of time but the administrative team really work diligent over the summer to make sure that we had specific professional development you heard about some of it that was done over the summer but we also took time during our professional development days to make sure that all staff in grades K through 8 new about the work that literacy worked on over the summer and trying to build that capacity around that we had a great new staff orientation we also brought in some of the professional development that we did for example on the first state that we welcome back staff in the afternoon required safety training as well as courageous conversations about race training with all staff and in my memory and in others it's the first time we've really collectively gotten together and really spent that day really learning together as School entities and that was great we commented about the Lake Bluff playground coming along so I won't go about that will be doing the third Friday count quite soon all figures are looking that enrollment is up slightly we still haven't rebounded to where we were. Covid but I would say that we are inching away at it and I'm hoping that our third Friday data reflect that as well we talked about some update to the web in terms of equity and action and financial stewardship and today I worked with my joint and talked about how can we make sure that we are putting more academic information on the website as well and so will be working on that to remind people that will be having to work groups that will be getting going on the first one but I'm really doing and information regarding the possibility of an operating referendum and Heather Haviland is has sent out some invitations and his working to that end will also be looking at the pros and cons of full day kindergarten and making some recommendations to the board regarding that and we'll be getting some people together to discuss that and with that just want to say again thank you for the smooth start to the school year it's been a really good feeling and I hope you are sensing it as well as we move forward I'd like to just comment on a couple things on the superintendent's consented there are two trips for your approval this evening nice to see we've got the model United Nations conference in January as well as approval of a student trip to Morocco from Shorewood High School sponsored by World Language but open my students and that they have the support of the high school as well as myself I also would like to take a moment and comment on the other item on the superintendent's consent agenda which is the agreement with the Shorewood Education Association and I'd like to talk about that or just a moment with you I'd like to thank the sca for the collaboration that they demonstrated in our work this year as we came to this agreement that you see with you tonight I'm very very pleased that I can say to the Board of Education that we as an administrative team made a pledge that we would work with a 4.7% increase for all employee groups and I really appreciate the board's commitment to that and we were able to execute that the agreement that you see tonight translates into funding steps land and a 3.2 increase to the salary schedule and I respect and I want to thank the sca for their understanding of the districts challenges I'd like to thank both of you go she ate him team as well as as well as the entire seane Miller said when we were talking in talking about our work and I think it's something up well in order to best serve our students in the teaching I should have collaborated productively and coming to this agreement and I would say the same I also think we had a lot of talks as we worked around State funding and tonight I just would like to say a few things regarding that because I think it's a great why we need to be looking at these challenges and why I'm grateful that we were able to give all employee groups a 4.7 per cent increase which is more than many around in our region but also really look at how China that was simply said our state isn't adequately funding our public schools with a 0% increase per pupil in the last two years it's created challenges that on top of unprecedented and inflation has created physical charges for us in the district that have been very very challenging and that's not only us but for all public schools in Wisconsin but here's one thing I do know we have terrific teachers in our district and education is a top priority for all of us Ensure and as I look at this it is beyond frustrating that the state budget surpluses are anticipated to be over five billion dollars as we sit right now and these funds could be used to support education if our policy maker choose to do so yet in the past two years we certainly haven't seen that and I look forward to a time when we can Advocate and hopefully have results that would allow for a better fiscal climate and I know the sca agrees with this as well we've taken steps to do more with less but in doing so we've also prioritize those salary increases we may be ductions we tightened our belts and admits that we've really worked hard at that 4.7 but I don't see this getting brighter in the next fiscal year unless we really look at advocacy across the state and really make our voice heard that we want a better education system and funding that is predictable sustainable and reliable our teachers want the funding system that is predictable sustainable and reliable and they deserve a salary structure that is the same it is increasingly challenging to provide that and I recognized our children deserve better our staff deserves better what state can do better so with that I appreciate the spirit of collaboration that brought this agreement forward I count on that and I look forward to it in the next year because we will have challenging conversations around many aspects of the next agreement for the 2324 school year and with that I would seek approval of the superintendent's consent agenda I'll see if any but let me see if anybody has any questions about the report okay and then and I will take a motion for the superintendent's consent agenda I also would like to say thank you to the hard work of that the FDA effective committee as well as Frankie and Heather has done to get a sitter on September 13th this year and I think I know it was a lot of hard work over the summer and I appreciate all
