Summer School

The Shorewood Summer School program for grades K4-12, and NovaNet for grades 10 - 12, is a teacher referral program for students in need of support to meet grade level expectations in the areas of math, reading and writing. An Extended School Year (ESY) program is offered for students with Speech Language or Cognitively Delayed (CD) disabilities who qualify for summer support. In 2011, the

District added a new summer class for incoming K4/K5 students focusing on the sights and sounds of literacy.

Strengths

and Challenges

Strengths for the Summer School program include :

  • Small class size allows for more individual attention.

  • The program increases academic readiness for coming school year.

  • The program builds student confidence and self esteem.

  • The Wrap Around program through the Community and Recreation Department encourages non-resident students to attend summer school and stay in district for afternoon programming.

  • The book buy program with Boswell Books (originally with Schwartz Books) gives students access to reading materials throughout the summer.

  • The opportunity for credit remediation at the high school level allows for students to access new classes and have scheduling flexibility during the next school year.
