District "Exceeds Expectations" in 2016-17 DPI Report Cards

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) recently released District and School Report Cards for public viewing. As the Report Card Scores indicate below, the Shorewood School District continues to "Exceed Expectations" or "Significantly Exceed Expectations."

Important Items to Note

Test Participation (Student Engagement Indicator): In years past, schools and districts have been required to take 5 and/or 10 point deductions for test participation below 95% or 85% respectively. In preparation for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), DPI chose to eliminate the test participation deductions this year. ESSA will likely eliminate these deductions in the future, however starting next year, students who do not participate in the test will likely receive a score of "0" in all areas which will be averaged into the Overall Accountability Score. DPI and the Federal Education Department are still working on the details of this legislation.

School Growth: School Growth is decided through a "Value Add Calculation" created by UW-Madison. This calculation is used to determine the academic growth of a student from year to year. DPI sent a notification that this year's "District/School Growth" categories were, in some cases, very different from previous years. DPI believes this is because the Badger Test--administered 3 years ago instead of the Forward Test--is still part of the "3-year rolling average calculation" used as part of the score. This will be something the District keeps a close eye on in the future.

Celebrations

The District scored higher than the State averages in the areas of "Student Achievement" and "Graduation Rates." Shorewood continues to be a high achieving district dedicated to ensuring graduation success for all of our students.

Growth Opportunities

Shorewood's scores in the area of "English Language Arts/ELA Growth" should be an area of focus. While the "Growth" calculations are somewhat inaccurate due to factors from the School Growth calculation (see explanation above), the District is still dedicated to working on ELA curriculum/instruction through its curriculum evaluation cycle.
