Opening ceremonies for the Shorewood Games—a tradition that SHS students and staff started 30 years ago to support the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund—took place yesterday in the SHS Auditorium.
The Games, which create unity among the Shorewood student body, also raise money for the MACC Fund through a variety of fundraising activities, friendly games, and competitions between freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, with each class getting points depending upon performance. The games are held every four years just like the Olympics, and since its conception in 1987, Shorewood students have collectively raised a total of over $325,000 for the MACC Fund.
To kick off the opening ceremonies, SHS students heard the account of 10 year-old childhood cancer survivor Cate Naffah as told by her mother Stacey. Cate was diagnosed with a cancer called Ewing's sarcoma of the sacrum when she was only eight years old and over the span of two years underwent 14 rounds chemo, 31 radiation treatments, ten blood transfusions, four ER visits, three ICU stays, and countless pokes, tests, appointments and overnight stays in the hospital. With the help and support of the MACC Fund though, Cate made a full recovery and is now cancer free.
Following the touching story from Naffah family, student representatives gave a rundown of the festivities and events that will take place throughout the two weeks leading up to the closing ceremonies.
