New "Walk Your Bike" Signs in Shorewood
Posted 06/04/2017 10:09AM

Message from The Village of Shorewood:

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee (PBSC) worked with Village staff in painting approximately 20 "Walk Your Bike" signs around the Village. The sign is intended to encourage bicyclists who want to stay on the sidewalk in busier parts of the community to walk their bike while passing through.

The PBSC over the past year heard several residents talk about the concern of bicyclists on the public sidewalk. Chapter 207-5, Section C of the Village Code prohibits the use of bicycles on public sidewalks unless the person is 12 years old or younger (as well as some other exceptions listed in the code).

In addition, several senior residents express their concerns about bicycles on the sidewalk as it poses a significant safety concern for them as they walk on the sidewalk. Once again, these signs act as a reminder to walk your bike on the sidewalk in parts of the business district so pedestrians in these highly used areas feel safe. The Village of Shorewood is fortunate to have a vibrant business district that pedestrians and bicyclists wish to access. These signs will help encourage all residents to use the public sidewalks in a safe manner.
