September 1st - 8th
Welcome back to school!! It has been a wonderful start to the year, I have enjoyed getting to know all the students and setting up expectations and procedures to ensure that we have a productive fun-filled year together. You may have noticed that your chid's Homework Binder contains helpful information such as the Lunch Menu for September and a calendar with important dates marked. Please check it regularly to keep abreast of what is happening.
I will be sending home a weekly newsletter to keep you up to speed with what we are doing in class. If there is anything else you would like me to include please let me know
Tonight is our Parent Orientation Night, please come to Room 1 at 7pm to find out more about what happens in third grade and how we can work together. This is for parents and guardians only, no kids please : )
This week we have been getting to know each other and working on setting the class rules. Atwater follows The 4 Bs - Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Kind. As a group we discussed how we could demonstrate these in the classroom. You can help at home by ensuring that your child demonstrates responsibility by completing and returning their homework.
Math - This week we have started our first unit in our math curriculum. The students received their new math journals and have started completing daily homework. The students also completed a beginning of year assessment to aid with differentiation and timed addition and subtraction fact tests. They had 6 minutes to answer 100 facts, this provides a baseline for ongoing math fact work
Writing - We have been working on some getting to know you writing - the students wrote an All About Me newspaper page, created name glyphs, and wrote about their favorite summer experience.
Reading - The students have been exploring our class library and I am beginning to assess reading levels to make sure that students are reading 'just-right' books.
Next week we will start our Science and Social Studies lessons.
Gym Shoes and Art Smocks
We have a number of students who have not brought their gym shoes or Art smocks to school yet. Please provide these as soon as possible. The students need clean shoes to wear in the gym and an old shirt to cover themselves when they are painting or creating clay pieces in Art.
