Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are sets of scientific, critical thinking and communication skills that students need for postsecondary success and citizenship in a world fueled by innovations in science and technology. The science practices outlined in the standards encompass the habits and skills that scientists and engineers use on a daily basis, as the content and practice are intertwined in the standards. For more information, please visit the Next Generation website.
By the fall of 2017-18, the School District of Shorewood will be fully aligned with NGSS. Before making any major changes in the curriculum, teachers are honoring the defined process of curriculum review and purchase (as outlined in board policy 330). To date, secondary teachers have spent the summer of 2013 reading and learning about the NGSS standards, determined what is currently being taught and what is not, and are deciding what (at each level) information should be presented, in addition to the shifts in the content that need to occur. To begin, we have focused on the secondary level, as next school year the elementary grades will focus on primary grades alignment.
