The Shorewood High School Drama Department would like to announce a change to its spring musical selection. Originally, a production of Guys and Dolls was planned for the May production, however, SHS Drama now plans to produce the smash hit musical Mamma Mia!, with music and lyrics by the Swedish pop group ABBA.
While Guys and Dolls is a classic, award-winning American musical and will forever be an enduring show in the American musical theatre canon, the SHS Drama Department strongly feels that Mamma Mia! will offer the female actors a wider range of empowering women roles while still allowing ample opportunities for the male actors to shine. Guys and Dolls was originally selected to offer the 2018-19 season a light musical comedy with many dancing opportunities and the Drama Department feels that Mamma Mia! will offer those same benefits.
Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story, and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. Audience members should get ready to tap their feet to “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” “Under Attack," “Knowing Me Knowing You,” “The Winner Takes it All,” and many more wonderful ABBA tunes.
Mamma Mia! will run May 16, 17, and 18 at 7 p.m. in the Shorewood High School Gensler Theatrw (Auditorium) and tickets will be available closer to the performance dates on the Shorewood Drama website and at the door the night of each performance.
