Lake Bluff Elementary Collaborates with Next Door-Milwaukee

On Friday, May 10th, students from the Lake Bluff Elementary School crew took a field trip to Next Door - Milwaukee, an organization that focuses on improving literacy and school readiness for children ages 0–5 in Milwaukee’s central city. The Lake Bluff students, who have been focusing on literacy and social emotional development, collected five boxes of books, which they then donated to the Next Door Capitol Drive site. Additionally, they stayed on site and spent time reading with the younger students.

“Boy did they do an awesome job!” says Missy Hodzinski, Literacy Specialist for Next Door. “Thank you to the awesome ‘crew’ and staff for the book donation, but most of all, reading with our children. What a wonderful group of students you have.”
More about Next Door:
Next Door was founded 50 years ago as a youth and young adult outreach center located next door to Savior’s Lutheran Church. Initial programming included a drop-in center for teens providing a safe and supportive place to congregate. Fast forward to today and Next Door serves nearly 1,700 children from birth to five years through center- and home-based programs and 11 partnership sites.
Next Door supports the intellectual, physical and emotional development of children by partnering with their families for success in school and the community.
Next Door’s vision is to position neighborhood children and families for long-term success.
S.T.A.R. Values
Safe. Thoughtful. Accountable. Respectful. By fostering these values in every member of the Next Door family—students, parents, teachers and staff—we set a foundation for success that goes much deeper than academics. When children learn the power of respect, the value of owning their own behaviors, and the importance of thinking through challenges—all within a safe and loving environment—that’s how every child becomes a STAR.
