Recreation Department and Fitness Center Annual Review

On Tuesday, February 11, Shorewood Recreation Department Director Jody Brooks along with managers Megan Phalin, Justin Calvert, and David Winger and coordinator Katie Harn, presented a review of the 2018-19 fiscal year to the Shorewood School Board.
 
The following topics were highlighted:
 
Shorewood Recreation Advisory Committee
This Advisory Committee, which was implemented in 1960, is comprised of residents appointed by the Village and District and meets five times during the school. The 2018-19 members included Renae Aldana, Jennifer Anderson, Lisa Even, Rita Higgins, Melissa Marschka, Maggie Reeve, Tim Vander Mel, April Toy, and Hilary DeBlois.

School District Survey
The District administered an Employee and Parent Community Survey through School Perceptions in May 2019.

Volunteer Program
The Recreation Department is in charge of coordinating volunteers for the District, and during the 2018-19 school year, had over 1100 active volunteers. Additionally, there were 23 teen volunteers who served over 533 hours of service.

On Thursday, May 16th, the District and the Village held a reception to honor these volunteers. Each organization gave the Spirit of Shorewood award to a volunteer whose commitment and service to our schools epitomized the volunteer spirit of the Shorewood community. They selected Nancy Beck Bamberg as the winner of this award.

District Employee/Student Wellness
In the 2018-19 school year, the Fitness Center had 169 single annual employee memberships and 3,115 total check-ins by staff members.
 
Classes offered to staff included:
* Strength Training – two sessions with 29 participants (half were staff)
 
In the 2018-19 school year, the Fitness Center had 285 annual student memberships and 5,043 total check-ins by students.

Summer Sounds Concerts
In summer 2019, there were a total of eight concerts held at Hubbard Park Lodge, with the help of the Village of Shorewood. All concerts took place on Wednesdays and were free for all community members to attend.

Other Updates
A successful Go Fund Me campaign in honor of John Doherty will result in a new scoreboard at Lake Bluff for the baseball field now known as John Doherty Field at Lake Bluff.
 
The 3rd Annual Shorewood Chill on Saturday, February 8th, was also a success. The event was well attended and a big thank you goes to all of the volunteer ice captains, the Village of Shorewood, and the Shorewood Foundation for their support.
