Note from School Board President Paru Shah

April 6, 2020

Dear Shorewood Families,

On behalf of the Board, I want to express our deep gratitude to all of you as we navigate this unprecedented situation together. We are proud to be part of a district where educators, school leaders, and staff have gone above and beyond to provide essential services and student learning support, and plan for the weeks ahead. I want to take a moment to recognize how profoundly challenging our collective situation is right now here in Shorewood and in our larger community and country. There are a lot of unknowns, there are no easy answers, and every day brings new information and additional questions.

In less than three weeks, school and central staff redesigned instructional delivery, student and staff supports, and introduced new services. Community-minded parents made available discussion boards and social media sites to share resources and information more broadly with other families. Everyone is rising to this enormous challenge in creative and student-centered ways. Thank you.

We will have COVID-19 updates at all of our upcoming board meetings, and we are having a special board meeting tomorrow, April 7th, at 7pm to vote on the grading policy that will be implemented during the extended closure. You can call into the meeting at (507) 591-1101, PIN: 956 652 871 #; public comments are scheduled for 7:05pm and 7:30pm.

I know many of you have heard that we are soon losing three great administrators to other professional opportunities - Ebony Grice, Angela Patterson and Marta Kwiatkowski. Their resignations will come before the board at our next regularly scheduled meeting - April 14th.

A strength in Shorewood is our people; we pride ourselves on identifying, developing and providing growth opportunities to our people and we work hard to attract talent and we know that our District is a desirable place to work. The flip side of this is that our District’s talent is also on the radar of other nearby Districts who offer opportunities that may be of interest to our people.

While we are very disappointed to see them go, we are happy for Ms. Grice, Ms. Patterson, and Ms. Kwiatkowski as they take on new and expanded responsibilities and we wish them only success going forward. We will be working with each of them to manage the transition and to gather their insights, perspectives and input on next steps. We also will be working closely with our Owner’s Representative in managing the steady progress of the referendum.

You will be hearing from me in the days ahead about the plans, searches for new candidates in these important roles and opportunities for community engagement. I want to thank Ms. Patterson, Ms. Grice and Ms. Kwiatkowski for their many contributions to our District.

Thank you for your partnership in supporting our District and ensuring that our students and entire community are well supported, healthy, and safe as we navigate the days ahead. I am grateful to be part of a community that truly cares for one another in ways big and small that we see happening daily in Shorewood.

Be well,

Paru Shah
