2021 Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest Winners Announced

The Shorewood Woman's Club recently announced the SIS winners of the digital art division of the 2021 Helen Farnsworth Mears (HFM) Art Contest. The HFM Art Contest is annual juried art contest for seventh and eighth grade students, which began back in 1927 to honor the memory of renowned Oshkosh born sculptor, Helen Farnsworth Mears (1871-1916), and to encourage artistic talent. Her works are on display in the US Capitol, Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madison State Capitol, and other national and state collections.

This year in the Shorewood competition, SIS students were charged with creating Digital Art while St. Robert’s students worked with 2-D and 3-D art.

"Thanks so much to all of the students who participated,” says Kay Berzsenyi, president of the GFWC Shorewood Woman's Club. “Our three judges had a difficult task to decide the winners among so many fine pieces and congratulations to all of our young artists.”

“This year SIS Art classes are focusing on finding pathways to uplift and celebrate individual voices, experiences, and values,” says SIS Art teacher Sophia Dahlen. “The artwork submitted to this competition is a reflection of that progress. I'm so incredibly proud of all the work SIS students have put in this year!”

All participants were given certificates, and the top three winners in each category—who received ribbons—will now compete in a second judging at the April District meeting in Wauwatosa. District winners will then proceed to the third judging at the State Convention in Rothschild in May. The State final place-winners’ artworks will be displayed at the Oshkosh Public Museum, home of Helen Farnsworth Mears, during the Museum’s summer art exhibit.
