Important District Updates and Reminders

Dear Shorewood Families,

Our Spring Break, March 21-25, is the final extended District holiday of the year, and I hope you take some time to enjoy it!

School resumes on March 28 and students and staff have a lot to look forward to - and accomplish - in the weeks ahead.  Below are some important updates and reminders about health and safety in our schools and key dates on the District calendar.  Please take time to read to the end of this important communication.

COVID-19 Health & Safety

  • Please take advantage of COVID-19 testing resources at the Village Center (lower level of the Shorewood Public Library) and elsewhere in the community after traveling and before returning to school. There have been very few in the District in recent days, and we want to keep it that way!

  • COVID-19  protocol amendments shared earlier this month detail the virus mitigation strategies that will continue into April, as well as changes that will be implemented if school cases remain at low levels. Please review these with your student before returning to school after Spring Break. Any changes to the protocols already outlined for the week of March 28 will be posted on the District website and communicated to families through Infinite Campus. The District will also monitor community and school case data and other information for several days following Spring Break, and will communicate any needed adjustments quickly.

Assessments & Surveys
  • Families with students in grades 3-8 and 10 received information last week about the 2022 Forward exam schedule, and your school has provided details about the schedule and reminders about the technology requirements. You have also received information on the March 18, 2022 deadline for opting out of this state assessment.  If you have not received this information, please contact your school principal as soon as possible.  March 18 is fast approaching - don't miss this date if you want to opt out your child.

  • Our annual School Perceptions Surveys will be conducted soon after Spring Break. We moved up the survey window in order to provide more time to share the results with you and also review and incorporate your input into our annual strategic priority planning. We read all responses and use your feedback to learn more about what we are doing well and what we can do better.  I hope you will participate and encourage others to do so, as well.

    • Surveys will be sent to District staff, parents, and Village residents during the week of March 28.

    • Students in grades 4-12 will have the opportunity to participate in the Student Survey at school, and time will be scheduled by principals so that it does not conflict with the Forward exam. Soon your child's school will notify you about School Perceptions survey dates and participation options. Once you receive this important school notification, please contact your principal with any School Perceptions survey-related questions.

Other Important Notes

  • The 2022-23 District Instructional Calendar was approved by the School Board in February and can be found here or on the homepage of the District website under News/Calendars. As you plan for next school year, please note that the school year will begin on Sept. 1, 2022 and the last day of school will be June 8, 2023.

  • The District will be offering summer school for students who need additional math, reading, and written language support. A teacher referral must be submitted in order for your child to participate. Classes will run every Monday-Thursday, 8am-12pm, starting Tuesday, June 21st, and ending after Thursday, July 28th. Classes are not held on Fridays, and there will be no classes on Monday, June 20th or Monday, July 4th. For those with a student who qualifies, more information about the summer school registration process will be shared by your classroom teacher in April, so please look out for that information.

  • Save the date! On Thursday, April 28, from 4-6pm, the District will be hosting a Referendum Open House to celebrate the facilities work that has been completed at Atwater Elementary, Lake Bluff Elementary, and Shorewood High School. Students, families and community members are invited to join us for tours of our new 21st century learning spaces, learn more about our historic preservation projects and more. No RSVP is necessary; details about the Open House will be shared after Spring Break.

As always, I appreciate that you take the time to read through these important District updates. Have a wonderful Spring Break and I look forward to seeing you all back on the 28th of March!

Warmly,

Dr. JoAnn Sternke
Interim Superintendent, Shorewood School District
