District Names Mike Joynt as Interim Director of Teaching and Learning

We are excited to announce that Shorewood Intermediate School Principal Mike Joynt will be serving as the Interim Director of Teaching and Learning for the 2022-2023 school year.
Mike will succeed outgoing Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Sam Coleman, and will assume his new duties starting July 5, 2022.

"I really look forward to working with our teachers and leaders in supporting the District's vision of equity, growth, and excellence for all in my new role," says Mike.  "Creating more equitable systems to better serve our students and families has been at the core of my work since I started in Shorewood.  In my new role, I plan to focus on key areas including creating school environments where students feel supported, safe, and welcome, promoting teaching and learning practices that are identity relevant and reflect our diverse community of learners, and creating opportunities so that students can grow academically, socially and emotionally. I can't wait to get started!"

In his role as the SIS principal for the past seven years, Mike has positively impacted the District in many ways.  He has integrated Project Lead the Way into the Intermediate School curriculum, created a co-teaching service model to better serve students with special needs, brought on the Project Wayfinder program to address the social-emotional needs of students, and created more equitable systems for student growth through the District's ICS initiative.

Mike holds a master's degree from UW-Milwaukee in Administrative Leadership with licensure as a Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction as well as a master's degree from Cardinal Stritch in Instructional Technology with licensure as an Instructional Technology Coordinator.
His extensive knowledge of the District's mission and goals, and familiarity with students and staff will be extremely helpful in creating a smooth and successful transition into this new role. We feel very fortunate to have an internal staff member with Mike's experience and commitment to education stepping up to the role for the upcoming school year, and we look forward to creating new opportunities for growth for all our students.

The District will be appointing an Interim Principal to serve SIS students, staff, and families for the upcoming school year, and we will work expediently to have someone in place by August 1, 2022, if not sooner. More information will be forthcoming.

I hope you are all having a great summer so far, and enjoy the Fourth of July!

Take care,

Dr. JoAnn Sternke
Interim Superintendent, Shorewood School District
