School Board Updates - 12.7.22

Dear Shorewood Families,

Please see below for updates on the Superintendent search survey, highlights from the most recent School Board meeting, and upcoming events and meeting reminders.

Superintendent Search Survey

The Shorewood School District Superintendent Search Community Outreach Survey–which was deployed to all District families and staff on Thursday, November 10–remains open until tonight Wednesday, December 7, at 11:59pm. If you have not yet taken the survey, we highly encourage you to participate as your input is critical and will be used to help develop a candidate profile and evaluate candidates’ skills and experience. The survey is confidential and results will go directly to School Exec Connect.  Each survey participant may complete the survey one time. Thank you in advance for reminding family, friends, and neighbors to complete the survey as well!

More information about the interview process–including community/caregiver forums with finalists–will be shared at a later date.   A link on our Shorewood School District website will offer information about the progress of the search process.

November 29th Board Meeting Highlights

Multilingual Learner Presentation

District Multilingual Learner (ML) Coordinator Roxanne Tibbits along with ML Department staff provided an overview of the Multilingual Learner program in Shorewood. Currently, there are 100 ML students in the District, including refugee students from three countries, and 37 different languages are spoken within the District.

As part of the presentation, the ML Department shared program evaluation data from the 2021-22 school year including English language proficiency growth and equity statistics (placement in advanced or accelerated offerings).

They also discussed the process that ML students go through to acquire a second language, how long it takes English learners to attain proficiency, and gave a breakdown of the District’s ML program model. The presentation ended with a short video featuring some of the ML students, which can be viewed here starting at (37:20).

School Growth Plans

Director for Teaching and Learning, Mike Joynt, reviewed each school’s growth goals for the 2022-23 school year with the Board.

The goals were created using the District’s strategic plan framework as a guide, and are outlined with learning targets in the following categories–academic growth, student wellness, and school culture.

Upcoming Events & Meetings

For those interested, there are two upcoming Board linkages over the next two weeks:

  • SHS Parents/Caregivers Linkage - Thursday, December 8, 6pm in the LMC South
  • Atwater Parents/Caregivers Linkage - Friday, December 16, 8:30am at Atwater School

The Shorewood School Board created the “linkage” process as a way to be more present in the Shorewood community, beginning in the 2015-16 school year. The purpose of a linkage is to allow members of the School Board to meet with constituents and provide information on the work of the schools. In addition, linkages also allow constituents to provide feedback for the School Board on anything District-related.

To view the linkage schedule, visit the Board Linkage Schedule page of the District website.

The next School Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13th at 7pm. Participants can join the meeting in-person or virtually. Please note masks are recommended but optional for in-person attendees. You can find all Board packets and agenda items here

Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Paru Shah, Shorewood School Board President
