Shorewood High School students recently participated in a week-long program at Carthage College as part of the African American Youth Initiative (AAYI), sponsored by the Closing the Achievement Gap Consortium (CAGC).
Co-led by AP Jamerson, Co-Director for AAYI, the program also featured Brandon Hemphill, Campus Supervisor, and Nelson Brown, Instructional Technology Support Specialist, who served as counselors for the 11th annual institute. The initiative aimed to empower students through education, leadership, and cultural engagement.
Participants attended workshops, engaged in discussions, and collaborated on projects designed to enhance their understanding while equipping them with the tools and support needed to excel academically and reach their full potential. The program fostered a sense of community among students, encouraging them to build connections, develop critical thinking skills, and gain insights into higher education opportunities.
Overall, the week provided a valuable opportunity for personal growth and inspiration for future endeavors, highlighting the Shorewood School District's commitment to equity.
