Cell Phone Free Learning at SHS

Shorewood High School has implemented an updated cell phone policy for the 2024-2025 school year. At the start of each class, students will be expected to silence and place their cell phones in the designated phone caddy. This is to create the best possible learning environment for academic success and aims to minimize distractions as well as help students stay engaged in the classroom.

“At SHS, we are dedicated to fostering an environment that maximizes each child’s learning potential, ensuring that every moment spent in the classroom is meaningful and focused,” says Associate Principal, Amanda Jamerson. SHS is committed to a focused learning environment and the new cell phone policy supports that. “We understand that technology plays an important role in our daily lives, but we also recognize that limiting its use during class can significantly enhance student focus and participation,” says Jamerson.

While cell phones will be limited during instructional class time, students may still carry and use their phones during passing time, lunch, and free periods. In the event of a true emergency, such as a medical issue or safety concern, students should inform their teacher to obtain permission to use their phone. If a student needs to contact a parent or caregiver during class time, students can obtain a pass to the main office to contact home. Going forward, if a parent or caregiver needs to reach their child during the school day, they are directed to call the main office.

The leadership team at Shorewood High School is confident this policy will help students reach their full academic potential and develop the skills needed for lifelong success. Thank you for your continued support in making SHS a place where learning thrives!
