When to Keep Your Child Home from School
There are times when your child should not attend school. Keeping your child home at these times will prevent the spread of illness to other children at school. If you have questions, please contact the health team.
Illness |
What to do? |
Diarrhea (3+ in 24 hours) |
Keep your child home until diarrhea free for 24 hours. |
Fever with temperature 100.0° |
Keep your child home until fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine such as Motrin or Tylenol. If you give your child medication, wait at least 6 hours after their dose to start timing the 24 hours. |
Cold/Flu-like symptoms with fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle pain, tiredness; may also have vomiting and diarrhea**/*** |
Keep your child home until symptoms have significantly improved (if fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, see that criteria as well). |
Head lice |
If lice are first found at school, children may stay until the end of the day but may not return until treated and all live lice are gone. |
Illness that prevents the child from taking part in class activities easily |
Children may return to school when able to take part in activities (if fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, see that criteria as well). |
Rash (with fever or behavior change) |
Keep your child home until seen by a doctor and treated if needed. |
Strep throat |
Keep your child home until 24 hours after antibiotics have been started (with a physician note, a student may return within 12 hours if indicated by MD). |
Pink eye (Conjunctivitis) |
Keep children home if they are unable to avoid touching eyes. Antibiotics not required for return. |
Vomiting |
Keep your child home until vomit free for 24 hours and able to tolerate a regular diet. |

**Tested Positive for COVID or Influenza - please follow the Fever, Cold/Flu-like Symptoms, Diarrhea, and Vomiting protocol.
***Tested Positive for Pertussis - Please contact the District Nurse Immediately. Students must stay home for 21 days from symptom onset or they may return after a 5-day treatment of antibiotics. Physician note or notices from the Health Department REQUIRED to return.
