Girls Tennis State Championchips

The Shorewood Girls Tennis Team made history this weekend, capturing the Division 2 title at the 2025 State Girls Team Tennis Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison.

In their first-ever State Tournament appearance, the fourth-seeded Greyhounds (19-8-1) surprised the field and claimed the championship with a decisive 6-1 victory over third-seeded Altoona (19-6) in Saturday's final. In doing so, Shorewood became the first #4 seed ever to win a WIAA Girls Team Tennis State Championship, making their victory one for the record books.

The Greyhounds set the tone early by winning three of the four singles matches. Misa Herriges earned the win at #1 singles, capping off an impressive postseason after placing third at the individual championships last week. Milja Aguirre added a key victory at #2 singles, and Sophia Eckman secured another point for Shorewood at #3 singles.

Shorewood swept all three doubles matches to seal the championship. The #1 doubles team of Kennedy Merkel and Katya Velikanov notched a decisive win, while Evelyn Schuurman and Alaina Tautges claimed victory at #2 doubles. The duo of Elinor Cincotta and Elsa Oldenburg rounded out the team's stellar performance with a win at #3 doubles.

To reach the finals, Shorewood pulled off a dramatic 5-2 upset over top-seeded Edgewood in the semifinals, an impressive showing that highlighted the team's depth, determination, and team work.

Congratulations to the Shorewood Girls Tennis Team on an unforgettable season and their first-ever WIA State Championship!
