Shorewood Board of Education Receives Facilities Master Plan
Posted 11/29/2017 07:23PM

After nearly two years of research, planning, and community engagement, the Shorewood Board of Education was presented with the Master Facilities Plan at the November 28th meeting. The entire document can be viewed on the District website under the Facilities Planning tab, titled Master Facilities Plan.

The Master Facilities Plan supports the District's goal to Modernize and Maintain Historic Buildings, a priority identified by over 100 community members who participated in the 2016 Shorewood School Summit. The plan will be used by the School Board as a starting point in prioritizing the needs of our District facilities. This prioritization process will continue over the next several months and will incorporate additional feedback from administrators, teachers and the community.

The facilities needs fall into four broad categories, with general themes emerging from our initial community sessions in 2016. The themes are:

ADA Accessibility: Ensuring accessibility for all, through compliance with ADA standards in restrooms, classroom access and building entrances.

Capital Maintenance: Honoring the historical character of Shorewood Schools while respectfully addressing building systems and functionality in classrooms and common spaces.

Modern Learning Environments: Supporting teaching and learning by creating better technology infrastructure and flexible instructional spaces.

Safety and Security: Creating safe and secure buildings while still honoring the traditions of open campus and community accessibility to schools.

Next Steps

The Board is committed to addressing the maintenance and capital improvement needs outlined in the Master Facilities Plan. The Board directed Superintedent Davis to proceed with a competitive bidding process to hire an architecture and construction management firm to assist in developing possible solutions and project cost estimates.

"The current version of the Master Facilities Plan does not represent a commitment to implement the outlined changes to our facilities, but is an important step in the process," said School Board President Paru Shah. The Board made clear at the meeting that they have not decided which projects to prioritize yet, and that they have not committed to going to referendum. They will be exploring different options over the next few months, but are open to a process that takes time.

Projected Timeline

December 2017 - January 2018: Board and Administration use Master Facilities Plan to begin prioritizing needs.

February - March 2018: Teachers and staff provide input on priorities.

April 2018: Community survey conducted on priorities and possible referendum.

As the Board moves forward, they will focus on the needs and interests identified in the Master Facilities Plan while maintaining our District values. They are also committed to evaluate any and all proposed solutions intended to satisfy both community interests and values in a fiscally responsible way.

Questions or comments on the Master Facilities Plan can be sent to Superintendent Davis at facilities@shorewood.k12.wi.us.
