Shorewood and Homestead Chamber Orchestras to Perform at Carnegie Hall
Posted 02/11/2018 08:00AM

Shorewood High School chamber orchestra will be joined by students from Homestead High School for a performance at New York City's Carnegie Hall on February 18, at 2 p.m. in the venue's Isaac Stem Auditorium.

This will be the second time the two schools will perform at the venue, known for being one of the most iconic theater spaces in the world. The orchestra directors at Shorewood and Homestead were notified last winter that their orchestras had been selected for the performance.

Karen Frink, SHS chamber orchestra director, is thrilled for her students to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at what is the ultimate performance venue in the country, and feels it is a tremendous honor to be selected.

The Shorewood and Homestead orchestras were selected as part of a competitive audition process through Mid America Productions, an organization that provides opportunities for music ensembles to perform across the country. It approves only a small number of high school orchestras for the Carnegie Hall event each year. In 2014, the last time the schools participated, students performed for an audience of nearly 2,000 people.

In addition to the performance, students will tour New York City over the weekend and take in a showing of "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. They will also visit Lincoln Center, the Julliard School and Rockefeller Center, among other destinations.

The orchestras will also perform at a send-off ceremony Tuesday, February 13, 7:30 p.m., at the Schlitz Audubon Center in Bayside. No admission will be charged for the performance, and there will be a reception to follow.
