The Shorewood School District has announced that work will begin on the installation of new tennis courts at Lake Bluff Elementary School on June 16, 2017. The project received a green light on May 25, when the Shorewood School Board approved up to $20,000 in additional funding to meet the total costs needed to complete the project.
The new courts will be located on the northeast part of the Lake Bluff Elementary School property next to the school's parking lot. The project has been in the works since 2007, when it was first prioritized as part of the Village's Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. The courts were put on hold due to lack of funding, but the project gained new life in 2015 when the Lake Bluff PTO, in partnership with the Shorewood Advancement Office, launched a fundraising drive to raise money for the courts to honor the retirement of Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Dr. Kirk Juffer and his wife, Shorewood High School Art Teacher Sonja Juffer. The fundraising campaign helped to raise over $10,000 for the project from over 125 donors. The Shorewood Foundation gave a $10,000 grant to support the courts, while the Village of Shorewood committed $50,000, and the Shorewood School District committed $141,000 from its Recreation Fund, plus the additional funding approved on May 25, worth up to $20,000 to complete the project. In the last two weeks, the Shorewood SEED Foundation gave a $25,000 grant to support the project, while the Lake Bluff PTO gave a $5,000 grant in support of the new courts.
Ultimately, it was a community-wide effort that helped raise the total amount needed to meet the project funding goal.
The addition of the new courts at Lake Bluff will support wellness for Shorewood students and community members, offering multi-purpose capabilities for both tennis and futsal. Lines for the two tennis courts will run north-south, while lines for the two futsal courts will run east-west, allowing the facilities to be used for either tennis or futsal.
The installation of the courts, led by Munson, Inc., will take place over the summer and will require a reconfiguration of some of the parking spaces in the staff lot at Lake Bluff. The goal is to finish the project by the end of the summer in order to avoid any impact on staff parking during the upcoming school year.
A grand opening celebration will be scheduled for the Fall, in conjunction with the Shorewood Farmer's Market. More information will be posted on the Shorewood School District website.
