Former Atwater Elementary School principal, Richard G. Cobb, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the age of 85. He was preceded by his wife Gloria Werch Cobb who passed away on April 19, 2016, and was the father of D. Blakely (Cindy) Cobb and Heather (John) Fields, and grandfather to Annaleah and Jake Fields.
Born in Whiting, Iowa in 1932, Richard lived most of his adult life in the Milwaukee area. Richard impacted the city of Milwaukee for 57 years in two bi-vocational careers of Pastoral Leadership and School Administration. Richard's passion was serving the Shorewood community as Principal of Atwater Elementary School for nearly twenty years (1973-1992).
Cobb is remembered at Atwater for having high expectations for both students and staff, always backing his teachers, and for having a very good sense of humor.
Atwater staff members fondly recall that when Cobb left in 1992, he rode off of the playground on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle while the whole school sang "Happy Trails to You."
Following his departure from Atwater, he served as the Director of Instructional Programs for West Allis and West Milwaukee Public Schools, President of Milwaukee Area School Counselors Association and Director of Brown Deer Instructional Services.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Cobb's life was held at Eastbrook Church on Saturday, November 11th. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators honoring Richard's desire to live out God's Word to all people - https://www.wycliffe.org/projects/worldwideprojects-fund.
