Our Schools

The District, and our highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals, fosters a love of learning and the acquisition of knowledge and skills that serves as the foundation for a lifetime of learning.  The achievements of the School District of Shorewood’s 1,963 students are among the highest in the State of Wisconsin.  In 2008 the United States Department of Education recognized Shorewood High School as a “Blue Ribbon” school for consistent high achievement and closing the achievement gap between minority and majority students.  In  2013, U.S. News and World Report ranked SHS the top high school in Wisconsin. These recognitions are a reflection on the entire school district (two elementary schools, intermediate school, high school, charter school and pre-school) and the quality educational experience each child receives throughout grades PK-12.

The School District of Shorewood strives to provide academic and extra-curricular programming in areas that promote high achievement and performance to meet community expectations.  We seek to develop students who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and empathic listeners who advocate for their opinion, exhibit strong positive character, and who are engaged in the world around them.

Consequently, the District offers a variety of programs that are unique and focused on the needs of individual students.  Special programming includes:

  • World language grades 4-12
  • Multiage education grades 1-6
  • Advanced Learner (Gifted and Talented) PK-12
  • Character education grades PK-12
  • Variety of travel opportunities (academic and co-circular) 7-12
  • New Horizon Charter School- grades 9-12

In addition to the core subjects of math, English, science, social studies, visual and performing arts, world language, and physical education, the District also provides services in support of students in the areas of Special Education, and English Language Learners (ELL).

All curriculums are assessed and developed through the recent implementation of a curriculum cycle completed through four phases and usually within six-eight years.  This cycle asks staff to understand the current state of the curriculum and its content (year 1), next the curriculum is written and mapped (year 2), then it is implemented and delivered to students (year 3-4) and finally staff reflect on the teaching implementation making necessary modifications (year 4-8).  Staff complete this work during extensive professional time provided by the School Board of Shorewood. In addition, we are building a foundation of support for these initiatives by providing professional development in the areas of differentiation for mixed ability groups, assessment for learning, and curriculum mapping.  All of these initiatives are brought together under the umbrella of Jay McTighe’s “Understanding by Design”philosophy and planning framework.

The School District assesses students using the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE).  Students in grades 3,5,6 and 7 are assessed in math and reading and students in 4th, 8th and 10th grades are assessed in reading, language, math, science and social studies.  The School District focuses on WKCE test results found in the areas of reading, math, and writing.  The District believes that these areas are foundational and that all students should leave our District at graduation able to read and write and understand math at a proficient level.

Our students consistently exceeded the national and WI average test scores for the ACT (American College Test).   Shorewood students collectively have one of the highest scores in Southeastern WI.  Each year, members of our senior class are recognized as commended, semi-finalists and finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Further, well over 90% of our graduates attend post-secondary educational institutions.

None of this is possible without the committed support of all of all of our stakeholders - administrators, School Board members, teachers, support staff, community members, students and parents.
