WordMasters
 
WordMasters Challenge is a national contest encouragingword masters student growth in the areas of verbal reasoning and vocabulary expansion. WordMasters competitions consist of three word analogy challenges from December to April. The Advanced Learning Department hosts bimonthly student meetings in preparation for these challenges.
 
Grades: 3rd - 6th

How to Participate: All students will be invited to participate each year
Battle of the Booksbattle of the books
 
Grade-level teams of three students read from an assigned list of 45 books in preparation for in-school battles. The winning team from each grade level advances to a regional battle consisting of 15-20 area schools. The Advanced Learning Department holds periodic "BOB' meetings to monitor team progress and prepare for battles.

Spelling Bee
 
Shorewood's Elementary and Intermediate schools participate in the
Scriscripps spelling beepps National Spelling Bee. Students receive a list of spelling words that are used at the grade-level and school-level bees. The top student at each school then advances to the regional spelling bee, with a chance to represent the region at state and national bees.

Math Olympiad

Shorewood's elementary students meet weekly to learn test taking strategies
and to compete in a national math competition.  Competition consist of five math tests throughout the school year.
