Shorewood Recreation & Community Services Dept Review

On Tuesday, February 26, Shorewood Recreation Department Director Jody Brooks along with managers Megan Phalin, Justin Calvert, and David Winger presented a review of the 2017-18 fiscal year to the Shorewood School Board.

The following topics were highlighted:

Shorewood Recreation Advisory Board
This Advisory Board, which was implemented in 1960, was comprised of residents appointed by the Village and District and met five times during the school. The 2017-18 members included Renae Aldana, Jennifer Anderson, Lisa Even, Rita Higgins, Melissa Marschka, Maggie Reeve, Tim Vander Mel, April Toy, and Hilary DeBlois.

Volunteer Program
The Recreation Department is in charge of coordinating volunteers for the District, and during the 2017-18 school year, had over 900 active volunteers. Additionally, there were 25 teen volunteers who served over 842 hours of service.

On Wednesday, May 9th, the District and the Village held a reception to honor these volunteers. Each organization gave the Spirit of Shorewood award to a volunteer whose commitment and service to our schools epitomized the volunteer spirit of the Shorewood community. The selected Shantha Jhansale as the winner of this award.

In the 2017-18 school year, the Fitness Center had 145 single annual employee memberships and 2,349 total check-ins by staff members.

Classes offered to staff included:
* Strength Training – three sessions with 45 participants
* Yoga—two sessions with 25 participants
* Zumba—one sessions with 10 participants

Summer Sounds Concerts

In summer 2018, there were a total of eight concerts held at Hubbard Park Lodge, with the help of the Village of Shorewood. All concerts took place on Wednesdays and were free for all community members to attend.


Staffing Updates
In the 2018-19 school year, the Recreation Department hired three new personnel.
1) David Winger was hired as the Fitness Center Manager
2) Elizabeth Weston was promoted to Lead Personal Trainer
3) Katie Harn was hired into the newly created position of Recreation and Fitness Center coordinator.
