District Equity Update, September 2019

The Director for Equity, Sam Coleman, has collaboratively worked with District and School Administration to design and facilitate professional development provided to all District employees on August 28, 2019. Professional development topics included the following:
  • Understanding implicit bias
  • Leveraging collaborative data analysis and subsequent implementation of instructional practices to eliminate inequities
  • Expanding the use of restorative practices to create a culture of belonging, high academic expectations, and character development for all students
The PowerPoints used to facilitate staff professional development can be found at the bottom of this page.

Coleman has met with community stakeholders (parents and community members from Shorewood Moving Forward, Village Library Director, Village Manager, and the Assistant Village Manager) to discuss opportunities for collaboration and alignment of equity-related goals and practices.

Coleman, in collaboration with Superintendent Davis, has scheduled introductory and planning meetings with the Shorewood School District Diversity Work Group and students from Youth Rising up to re-engage these groups for ongoing feedback and implementation of recommended action items that resulted from the 2018-19 school year convenings.

Additionally Coleman has assisted with the development of the process by which students, parents, staff, and community members will be engaged in the buildout of the 2020-2025 Strategic Framework. The first stakeholder session is scheduled to convene on September 25, 2019 and will be facilitated by Superintendent Davis and Coleman. The subsequent six sessions will be scheduled to convene monthly until April 2020 ending with a comprehensive 2020-2025 Strategic Framework that will be presented to the School Board in May 2020.
