On Friday, September 27th, a group of 18 Shorewood High School students attended the UNCF Empower Me Tour (EMT) at the Wisconsin Center downtown. The EMT is a free, traveling college- and career-readiness road show, which has a national series of events established to inspire and motivate high school, college students and recent college graduates toward academic excellence, career success and personal responsibility.
EMT provides the opportunity for thousands of high school and college students and recent college graduates to gain acceptance into undergraduate or graduate schools, earn scholarship funds and/or secure jobs and internships on location. Participants attend a series of presentations, panels and interactive workshops offered through two distinct tracks—a college-readiness program and a career-readiness program—to help them get successfully to and through college and obtain meaningful employment thereafter.
The SHS students in attendance on the 27th, utilized the college-readiness program and partook in interesting and engaging workshops facilitated by subject matter experts that covered topics such as:
- How to maximize the high school experience
- Standardized testing
- College search and admissions process
- The scholarship and financial aid processes
- Student life on campus
- The vital role and success of HBCUs
By the end of the day, all 18 SHS students received at least one college acceptance letter.
“The EmpowerMe tour was a very meaningful experience for our students,” says SHS counselor Jennifer Hoffman, who attended the tour with the students. “Not only were they able to receive on-site admissions decisions, but also next step questions were answered such as options for funding college and scholarship opportunities. I'm very proud of this group of seniors!"
