Juniors, Ava Danzer and Bella Lozier, both sopranos, and senior cellist, Nicholas Emanuelson, submitted audition videos to judges on January 23 using the following criteria:

Instrumentalists: One piece or one movement of a multi-movement piece.
Vocalists: Two contrasting classical pieces; one in a foreign language and one in English. A musical theater piece may be substituted in for the piece in English. For this Competition, the word "classical" refers to an art song or an aria from an opera, operetta or oratorio; and the words "musical theater" refer to a staged Broadway production.

They were then chosen to advance to 2021 High School Showcase Recital, which will take place on Sunday, February 7. Danzer, Lozier, and Emanuelson will be competing to be selected as one of four musicians to receive a total of $1,500 in Young Artist Scholarships.

With three students in the running, Shorewood High School has the most finalists out of any district participating in the competition.

“I am extremely proud of [our students] for their hard work and dedication to their craft especially through the challenges performing artists have faced during this Covid-19 pandemic,” says SHS Choir Director Jason Clark. “We are so fortunate to live in a community that is committed to supporting outstanding arts education and led by administrators that continue to push for the strength of these programs. It is critical for me to note that the performing arts teachers here in Shorewood are also exceptional and they all work to promote, support, and encourage music learning beyond their classrooms in an effort to help create well-rounded young men and women.”

The showcase recital will be recorded and aired online on Sunday, February 7 at 2:00 PM.
Scholarship announcements will be made at the conclusion of the recital. For more information, visit: https://www.civicmusicmilwaukee.org/2021hscompetition
