School Perceptions Survey Data Disclosure

Dear Shorewood Families,

To fulfill an Open Records Request on January 26, the District collected School Perceptions Survey results for the past four years. In reviewing this data for confidential information, there was an oversight and the District inadvertently disclosed the names and demographic information of student respondents to the 2020 School Perceptions survey.

After being notified of the disclosure on January 27, we took immediate steps in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Safeguarding Recommendations. The District requested that copies of this information be destroyed to prevent further distribution and received confirmation that day that all those in receipt were notified and directed to destroy copies of the documents.

Following an internal review, the District has instituted new procedures and authorizations to prevent this from happening in the future. Families of students included in the release of information are being contacted with additional information about this disclosure.

We take our obligation to safeguard student information very seriously. Please accept our sincere apologies for this error.

Sincerely,

Bryan Davis
Superintendent, Shorewood School District
