District Names Dr. JoAnn Sternke as New Interim Superintendent

Dr. JoAnn Sternke has been selected by the Shorewood School District Board to serve as the interim superintendent for the 2021-2022 school year.

Sternke will succeed outgoing superintendent Dr. Bryan Davis as the Board conducts a full search for the District’s permanent superintendent next year.

Sternke, who began her educational career in the Shorewood School District teaching Drama and English at Shorewood High School, says that she credits Shorewood with instilling a passion for excellence in her.

“I began my teaching career in the Shorewood School District and it feels wonderful to come back to serve a district and community I deeply respect,” says Sternke. “ I pledge my very best in support of the mission of Equity, Growth, and Excellence for All. I look forward to meeting our students, families, faculty & staff, and Shorewood community members. Let’s all work together to make this a fantastic school year!”

Most recently, Sternke has worked with Studer Education where she coaches and mentors educational leaders throughout the nation to enhance workplace culture and better execute strategy in pursuit of heightened outcomes.

Prior to this, Sternke was the Superintendent of the Pewaukee School District for 16 years, where she worked with a dedicated Board of Education and talented team to live the mission of opening the door to each child’s future.  During her tenure in Pewaukee, the District became recognized for innovative practices that lead to heightened student achievement. Sternke also worked in administration for the Cedarburg School District after receiving her administrative licensure.

Over her celebrated career, Sternke has been recognized as Wisconsin’s Superintendent of the Year, Pewaukee Citizen of the Year, and one of the Milwaukee Business Journal’s Women of Influence.

“The Board feels fortunate to have someone with Dr. Sternke's experience and commitment to education joining us during this very important transition year,” says Shorewood School Board President Paru Shah. “We believe her extensive knowledge in systems change, communication, building teams and mentoring will serve our district well. We look forward to Dr. Sternke bringing strong leadership and growth opportunities for all students.”

Sternke will begin her role with the District on August 2, 2021. The Board will host an official meet and greet for the school community later in August.
