hello and welcome to the July 11th 2023 school board meeting we are excited to welcome our new superintendent Lori Burgos what is a lot before we Dive In so our first order of business is to adopt our agenda are there any additions any going to adopt the agenda second I should have mentioned it and will be joining us a little late I will be here for the end of the meeting now general for a new Serpentine to meet our overarching result it is my honor to do so our students are leaders who challenge themselves to grow and Achieve academically pursue their passions navigate to change learn continuously and contribute to the common good and any other words than yes I have several first is to thank everyone involved from seed and our alumni association as well as a recreation department staff are total staff in preparation for the all alumni reunions that took place on July 1st we welcomed around 300 visitors to the high school campus and it was an amazing event especially since this was the first I'm posting it so also thanks to Huffman and in keyland Miron construction who partnered with us for a facilities referendum and they supported the event and it was interesting because in my former life I work with Mike Huffman and I'm Oreo creamer so it was interesting to run into them at the picnic and I got a low-down of the referendum project here so that was a nice added bonus but more so than that it was really fun for me to meet all of the different alumni and hear the stories of people who came from very far away I met people from the class of 1953 and they're also recent grads from 2017 2018 who came to the event so it was an it was a very hot but it was fantastic so a huge thanks to everyone and carry as well and jack for all their work to make that happen we're excited to think about next year's Centennial picnic also thanks to principal Tim Kenny he offered campus tours they are there were large groups who came to see the renovations here in the LMC of the renovated copper Dome and more he also welcome to class of 2022 student leaders JC Great Hall and Brian Terry to help commemorate the construct the administration building addition with a time capsule ceremony and it was really fun to see all of the items that they curated to put into the new Cornerstone the high school in Lake Bluff Elementary School will celebrate their 100 nurseries in 2024 so the date for next year's reunions picnic is July 6th everyone please save the date I am sure it will be even better than this year's and then a huge shout out to Justin Calvert for my Rec Department who served the July 4th parade Marshal community support for his nomination says a lot about his work his dedication and his can-do spirit and I have seen it for myself and my short time here although he seems to be moving at about 60 or 70 or maybe 80 mph every time I see him I'm he seems to be everywhere but congratulations congratulations. Justin is a very well-deserved honor so please join me in I have below a covid thanks and praise for everybody involved in the picnic that was amazing thank you so I was Carrie ate was amazing but you know the other night of on where is everybody was hot but people are having a lot of fun was just really apparent how much joy that brat to everybody and it's great to see that alumni and did he come together and really diverse group in many ways I just Sarah and Peter Hamond we really appreciate that and then also Echo but it was so great just a minute. So we will move on to student treatment and results and I think Jody's already in one more shot up before we move on Sarah who organized the thank you I knew I was missing that the first organized the parade this was this parade was I think one of our best it was amazing so shout out to her too we have had fun helping children with candy I mean throwing it to him thank you all right now we're ready for you thanks for being here you got it what am I getting oh I said I'm going to go good evening I am here to give you an update on our summer for the recreation department we're in roughly week but we're pretty busy over the summer so we're on the back stretch all right we are about to see little preview all right here we go it's going to go through a handful of sites here so you can kind of see what we're up to these are all I think all these pictures of this summer and we update this every now and then so I know this one is our community events there's Justin the Fourth of July parade that was a cool honor for him there's a movie on the field which was last Friday and then first ride and Bike Rodeo at the Outwater ground we do that the police and the fire department they are the police helped out all day we had 50-plus children come through that program Sherwood set up for several programs we use a The District staff to man those program so we just always kind of like to shout out to them this is probably not and all-encompassing encompassing list cuz every now and then somebody will jump in and help out but are you going to get a feel for how many of the people helped out we just started our Summer band program this week Catherine miszewski Kalamata and Justin Olson were all there yesterday to get it started we have 60 students in that program so that's a huge frog and able to have a concert next stay behind that water I think 6 p.m. they set up on the steps and then have an outdoor concert if it rains will go inside and then Julie know when the summer Orchestra program starts next Monday and she has four different options in there roughly 60 students have in those options to Summer sounds we were scheduled to start last Wednesday but we got rained out with the whiskey Bells we are fingers crossed that the same thing doesn't happen tomorrow but Mother Nature is just not cooperating or Wednesday so tomorrow night is Pat McCurdy he lives in Whitefish Bay so he can be pretty patient more weight that one out a little longer The Whiskey Bottle said was what is easy so we'll see how it goes tomorrow if not I think we might have more like I didn't really reschedule the whiskey Bells their schedule when we would be able to have another concert was just ridiculous but we might try iPad I have a do you know what I don't even have myself let's just hope tomorrow night goes well the positive thinking I think we mention this when we met with you a few months ago is the Orthopedic Hospital has agreed to another three-year title sponsors so we are good to go for a couple more years between the Orthopedic Hospital The Men's Club the Chiropractic company were able to pay for all the bands and and all the expenses through donations new summer youth programming Majors that actually would be miners cuz it's at Lake Bluff majors and minors has 153 students participating playing pickup baseball everyday which I think is amazing that you know that you don't see a lot of that we have several tennis programs including three teams and that's that's another 47 students playing team tennis along with all the kids in the various lessons and then there a gymnastics program their drama Junior they have their play I think a week next weekend and they are 52 children participating in drama June we're here every Monday through Thursday from roughly 1 to 4 putting the set together getting the costumes ready to go practicing their play which is Matilda Junior this year so that is a great feeder system for a High School drama program and then we have all kinds of various other or classes enrichment classes and a sports-related programs here's some more pictures that's Pet Portraits there's drama Junior technical group getting the stage ready to go we had a golf program at Lake Bluff a few weeks ago and Legos create with Legos class and then we have Camp Sherwood which is harcum / Child Care Program at at Water we have an average of about 60 kids A week and it's full I think all but the last few weeks and we just have a couple of openings so they went to the Horicon Marsh for their first field trip last week they were at Cedarburg pool on Fridays they go on field trips this Friday they're going to pay Beach two weeks ago to a Brewers game so we send them various places each week we've got a really great staff and the kids are having a lot of fun and we do go to the library with you today we went to the library so Tuesday's were taking advantage of the Free Library program so we take them over there and we can go to the beach on Thursdays we have additional lifeguards that we pay to go along with to be honest a lot of our afternoon Zephyr already lifeguard so with a ton of people over there to support that there's our adults will know that's not at all pets adult but it's Father's son but that's how we told them and the process will be, so yes can always gets really good numbers school program that it's I guess it could be anyone but I can just mostly Fathers and Sons but it's open to anyone aquatic programs we are open at 5:15 in the morning and on the pool table at 6 each night we have Fitness classes swimming lessons we do public swimming lessons during the week in Camp Shorewood most every morning they go for a swim lesson or to swim so that is part of the cost they give free swim last night they don't get from their part of their cost is take a swim lesson so it's an additional value for the people involved open swim 7 days a week we are there in the morning and the afternoon in the weekend it's 25 we are open every weekend and a few things coming up in the pool and Jack's been very helpful and a lot of these the new speaker system is in all right so it's almost 10 and the Jack help with that. put the speakers in and all the electronics and we will be getting a new scoreboard thanks to the swim club within the next three months or so and the ability to livestream a swim meet needs in the next three to four again jack is very instrumental in all that they run the between us and the swim club we run most everything by him to make sure it it's what we want to do and then we did at the stairs which we mentioned at the last meeting makes it easier to get in and out of for not only people with mobility issues but with parents with someone that's not a small child but a parent with a small child for a swim lessons can easily walk the steps a little more conveniently than sitting there six-month-old on the side of the pool jumping in and then grabbing the six-month-old so then and then we will eventually probably within the course of the school year around March when we shut down the pool for maintenance we should be getting a new filtration system Mars's is on the older side and eventually a new boiler system in the next few years so a lot of work the VA cheap pool David and his Fitness staff the fitness center we're getting back to pre covid numbers both participation wise membership wise and financially stable Focus this year and last year was on staff development now and getting the community back so we've really focused on trying to get people back in the night into the fitness center that personal training is I think probably above and beyond what it was before covid and we were pretty strong back then I'm so that's very helpful financially to help the fitness center is self-sustaining we bring in enough money to pay for the fitness center so it's not necessarily subsidized I mean you know how they say it kind of is because it gets some ancillary help from the district but what we pay out and what we bring in bring we bring in more than we pay out and that's always our goal and then one Focus this year and you might hear about this a little bit is we're trying to educate some of the younger people to come into the fitness center we've raised their prices a little to allow for personal training for the new members how many we're realizing they don't know how to use the equipment and they're worried they're going to hurt themselves and then that Pastor some of the other people that are in there when they see that so they're really going to be in if it's just on making sure the students I'm going to use the fitness center and adults but but this is mainly student issue are educated and know what they're doing with the equipment they're using and I think that's probably mention right here in Davis really made David Wingers are fitness center manager an effort as we replace equipment to make sure that it's adaptable that we can more people can use it even if they have mobility issues or that kind of thing so this actually is one of our new piece of equipment that feed helped us purchase that is a little easier to get on for people with mobility issues to see turns 360° and it has arm and foot movement so that's he's really paying attention that kind of thing and we're dabbling into having some of our equipment actually feed energy back into the grid that technology we don't know if it's quite there yet but Davis to the research so that when somebody's pet bike theoretically were sending electricity back into the grid but I will let him do that research except above and beyond my capacity I think so I guess that is if that's what up to right now which we had were actually right now in the middle of putting together our fall program guide so Barb and Nora are hard at work putting that together and hopefully to the printer and a few weeks so it's a tough time of year. Only getting everything for planning for fall will given him as Ivar thank you for coming tonight and I think I speak for a lot of saying thanks for helping wear out our kids and keeping them occupied mostly away from video games for Minecraft to buy even if my kid wasn't one of them I love seeing kids play with baseball bats in their backpack biking and it just feels like that's summer in Sherwood to find for me I love it so but there is such a wide range like it's incredible to hear you describe everything that we're offering and stomped through a small But Mighty staff so really impressive as always I'm excited for drama Junior and all the offerings to wrap up this year questions about programming ready I do I have a question about the summer sounds if she could clear up is food and drink available do we have a vendor there clothes cleaners Hubbard Park rough Davis in church of Hubbard Park and they put it up the stage and they pay for the porta potties which seems kind of Monday but does the tunnel to the bottom of her heart and it's only a maybe one company that can get or is willing to go back there with porta potties I shouldn't say can get back Melissa and they bring a tent down and provide food and beverage options and then so that that's kind of their benefit they they do that you can always walk up to the top of the hill if you wanted to go to the the beer garden but yeah that I handle that part we just make sure the music stair and we do have a new systems David Price volunteers his time if the band's need help with sound and Light allowed to bring their own food and prayer is a few tables are but not many so you probably have to bring your own the blanket and chairs that kind of thing great shining Jewel in this District thanks for all you do so you can do by hopefully resting maybe collapse yeah yeah this is what I invite so I told him I could do I could do this when she has a very very busy time of year for them even ride alarm Tim Allen next we have our first opportunity for public comment will have two opportunities this evening we have a shorter agenda and we welcome public comment we have anybody in the eye we do not so we will open it up to zoom attendee if you're calling into the meeting and he'd like to make a public comment please unmute yourself any public comments thank you thanks Karen right next up we have the discussion of the seat down dacian funding Vince and I see our friends from Steve present. Thank you delete we don't need a motion or anyting thank you I'm Alyssa Nelson co-president of the Seaboard and this is the Shawn Brown and orange child Treasure of the feed board and the always a fun reading to show up and tell you are year of fundraising and what we're giving back to the district so you start all right so I'm going to start a response to the district priorities as laid out in our June board meeting seed is going to continue to not fully fun but. Contribute to the partnership with Children's Hospital for mental health services and I guess I'll just say we're giving a total for these priorities of 90000 this year 40,000 of which will be for the children's partnership 15,000 will go to prep professional development for the new kindergarten through 5 Maddox program + 10000 two stipends for student support and Leadership roles that teachers who go above and beyond their they're normal responsibilities on so we're going to contribute $10,000 for those stipends and then 25,000 for instructional technology and that would cover graphic arts lab is going to be starting computer Leasing and Project Lead the Way needs new computers they've been had the ones that they're using now for I think I think my joints said 78 years now so yeah and then 5004 to support ready for the hot spots for families to don't have internet access at home and finally there are some security camera updates that need to be made in those all those four things all fall under the the umbrella of the instructional technology a portion of our 90,000 this year so the grants that we have given this year are $15,000 for the goguardian tech licensing for year the summer school program and materials that will now include 7th grade for $10,021 Makerspace at saisies 424 $5 Equity facilitating and training for 3750 microscopes and slides for the shs 9th grade science program at 10750 the workout bike for special needs special ed in handicap 3000 and an all-in-one percussion instrument accessories in case for two thousand and then we funded we always have a wish list at the spring event and the wish list for Lake Bluff at water and sis was electrical instruments and we were not able to raise all of that at the event but seed is funding the remaining balance of $5,600 for that so that they can get all the electric instruments that they wanted and needed that's a total of $52,489.03 and we also the Excellence in teaching award gave out 11 words to the tune of $55,000 to teacher so I'm going to get here. Thank you so much you are welcome you know I just want to follow up on the work you guys do is just remarkable I mean you should be teaching classes on how did you get what you too it's just really incredible thank you so much and I said I wanted to say to you to like specifically what I noticed as you ran down the list as just a really wide range of things and you know there's a wide range of me but it seems like there was a lot of thought put into real doing like a little at least a little bit of everything a lot of some things so thank you for that and just being so thoughtful always there's going to be quite a few parents that are excited about to go Guardian I mean hold on but that one is a great Village we all did it together so thanks for your time and I hope you guys Chuck's had other and I think Packers going to join us tons of fun I don't need my extra eyes good evening everybody thanks for having us and not to take questions or feedback at the end I said we don't really take them why do just a reminder this is what I always think about when we leave this work from whence we from when's became truly if you think about this 3 years ago I think about our first Cornerstone starting with the history of margin was Listen to I want to thank you as board members for the work that you've done cuz you can't do this work in isolation I told you from the beginning I will not do it by myself can't do it by myself and so going from that to deficit in the apps that bass language and that's important in our identity work I was going to get hard take the shot out a little bit later about some of the opportunities will be having I'm so are all four of our schools essentially have gone through Cornerstone one and these last couple years and his doctors kept room temperature will tell you you go slow to get it right and I want to shout out our district for her still being able to say the word Equity as we all know a lot of districts can't so this year will be moving in to Cornerstone Sue talking about aligning our staff and students and working toward the three teams which will build our efficacy and capacity for all of our experts sitting at the table to cover plan to serve with our students and so we all can call learn and we intentionally use the word Learners something that Lori has done since she's been here she's talked about the importance of us as I do Learners we need to lead this work and lean into it by learning to and then moving on to Cornerstone 314 the next thing this is what we do at when we do any ICS or Equity PD we talk about our agreement and it's intentional that we say agreements and not Norms because when we talked about Norms Norms are normally Norm to middle-class white cisgender male and our Douglass narrative is the biggest asset we have here in our district is real talking about on our agreement so anytime you do this work you're going to experience discomfort we asked that we stay engaged because our truths and expect and accept non closer and set a reminder that our staff has every time when we go to this work no blame shame or understanding the equity work as lifelong it is never-ending the goalposts is always moving it's like you knock one in equity out and another one pops up and that's at the individual and organizational level and then understanding our Collective Equity capacity in this with you we're all learning together I might lead this work but I'll eat it with so many other people I am not an expert on constantly learning and growing and so it's challenging and we're all going together okay highlights for the 2020 to 23 school year I think one of the biggest things in my first year here as I went back and I thought okay I'm so privileged right like I get to walk into all four buildings and I get to see this work wed but anyone will tell you during the pandemic or educators of the staff members became siloed does isolated mean we miss that contact we missed that opportunity to collaborate and so I thought what the way that we can get our message out in an organic an authentic way we will never do perform to work and I'm sure whatever we're going to keep it real all the time and our equity in action series with a houses to do is to highlight our staff and they do amazing work here and so I'm blessed and my can see it too like you go into the buildings and you get to see our staff and you get to see our students and you get to see community members that are doing and see what the equity in action series did with it highlight I worked at a lot of staff are doing and shout out to the high school cuz what they started doing what they did it at their high school during ICS and you know what the best response was from colleagues they're like oh my gosh I didn't know you were doing that thank you for sharing and so it's on our website so if you get a chance please if you see those people who have done it they really were thoughtful and their answers and so that's been huge for us to highlight the work that we're doing across the district next thank you for the opportunity for early release days that's super important for our staff that have those collaborations so we have early release Wednesday sand during those Wednesdays we have icy SPD will use that framework our leadership team called plans it and then we have staff and engage with it and it's an opportunity for a run to town and get together and go through our framework it is a huge commitment from our district it is something that we do not reschedule you do not reschedule our Equity work cuz I always say inequities don't take a day off until we're grateful for our staff continuing to commit to that the next one as we got some really good food back around our courageous conversations at the beginning of the year and I still would like to do that work with you guys at a board I think it's really important I'm so I was able to call plan with our Equity lead and we went through it. Just conversation piece and the tie-in for one of our goals for next year how we can use those courageous conversations please Mike and I have talked about this and Kate and I have talked about this and regards to how do you do these courageous conversations and then take that into a classroom cuz our students have an opportunity to have this these kind of conversations well and so that was a huge thing for us this year and you can also find that LinkedIn so if you want to take a look at that and you'll see was an access point for everyone cuz it was artwork and as fascinating to watch our staff look at our work and experience the artwork in a different form they talked about diversity is not just about race or gender it's about perspectives so I look at one piece of artwork and Mike might see a totally different than I do but being able to have those conversations just a few weeks ago doctor for Turan the thief Rogers which I'm sure many of you are familiar with the time he filled in for us a little bit last year at Lake Bluff came in and led to separate PD's one day was with our elementary team our leadership team and they had four hours around the three teams and what that could look like and then we had the next day it was with our high school Intermediate School and so really just continue until line our work across the entire District words not sideload and I just waited and it was good to see both of those teams working together next. for that we have coaching four times a year with dr. Scott Burns birds are they are truly committed to this work they do it at all for building levels and they do it with us at the district team as well they hold us accountable to make sure that we're going through the module work they are the expert so they're able to answer questions that we have I think our staff appreciates and our leadership team appreciates having them to lean on when we kind of get in that point where you get stuck or sometimes that happens in this work I was going to say this one for last but I think this is something I we did a really good job shut out to our students 100% they let all of this we had Jeff Robinson Jeffrey Robinson come and do a talk back with our community I will shout out again if you have not seen the who we are documentary it is life-changing it will change your he is amazing at what he does so to give up time to come to our community and watch her students shine as they do every single time they let everything so I want to continue to shut their mouth shut them out what they did and I'm so we hosted a TalkBack session and he was just amazing and we got really good feedback around that I last went at least will be one more thing after this but our collaborative commitments once again thank you as a board for adopting them it's a work-in-progress For Us in regards to all of us what that means for us when we make decisions around funding we make decisions about holding people accountable for this work when we make decisions about things that are said or done with our kids for our kids into our kids that's what those TC he's really to all of us a few things I want to add to this but we just got outside and get a chance to put it in the highlights we were invited to speak at Waka on December 5th at so our district was asked to speak at Worcester and they real I want to highlight the identity work we've done so if we think about module 3 and I'm going to say again from whence we came that year and a half ago it was hard some harm that happened in our community and now for Mazda 3 out and talk about the identity work we've done in our community that's used our district team will be representing the entire District cuz it's not just us that do this work and so we will be presenting it while still on December 5th and then hopefully in February at all so I will have opportunity presented with Dimitri Beekman and dr. Jill underlay in San Diego with some of the equity work that we're doing until 7 cross your fingers and hope that our proposal goes through so I really want to shout out our community for supporting what's up what's the name of that you're hoping to go to the superintendent is it okay. where do you want me to wait to smoke one more for Mike and I talked about this last week so or two weeks ago about creating our collaborative collaboration opportunities staff around received three teams how I'm having experts at the table that can meet the needs of our students specifically in our Tier 1 instruction with in the classroom we will be working towards identity relevant teaching and learning so we are in line with when we talked about where we are with the cornerstones that something we're really going to focus on this year what is the identity relevant teaching and learning and then entering proportional representation so across our district our students have access to rigorous curriculum or Artisans have access to extra Creek activities where students are able to see themselves throughout our entire district and in our community and then definitely committed to our courageous conversations you have to continue to have these conversations because the work can't move forward if you don't and this not on here but last night last night I want a shout-out carry for reminding us sometimes you do this work and you forget what's done but our Equity we do an amazing job but I really want us to talk about our associate principal and the demerson at the high school it was disturbing our data 2 weeks ago and if that didn't hit you in your heart and soul and we're in this for the wrong reason our black students really really are having a tough time in our district in more ways than one we can't run from it you can't hide from it and personally it impacts me tremendously and one thing that I meant the right away right like I met with people in my boys can we do and Amanda is leading the aayi so it's the African-American youth Institute closing the achievement Gap Consortium at Concordia it is a total of 35 public and private schools and they bring students of color on to the Concordia campus they run sessions they talk about financial literacy they talk about how you can get into they talked about financial aid I'm a lot of things that many times certain people in marginalized communities haven't had access to and so what Amanda has LED and what she will continue to lead so I just want to show her out and then she and I already spoke today she will become back to present to you all and so are our students who had an opportunity to attend aayi when we talk about data points we can give you a percentage has there's nothing better than listening to a student talk about how that experience changed their lives that is not a date that's real life the second have a percentage to tattoo and so to watch our students to talk about what it's like to see another black professional stand in front of them and give them an outlet in the opportunity to see themselves in this community is something that I think we all believe I'm so that'll be happening at Concordia next week she'll be waiting that work so he's going to give her a huge shout out for that and then also like I said she'll be coming back with our students to present to you Mexican all the questions tonight so you are my flights so are we done will not have ever done with anything but I know we're back to this stuff but in general do we have see three teams established at all the schools is that like a new operator model or are we still working on that as we work on the other things he called out just wasn't sure and so we have collaborative climate of opportunities all the schools were going to be focusing first on being able to get our special education staff to collaborate with her regular education staff it's going to be a work in progress that we want to provide opportunities not just to work with special education staff and involve her multilingual learner Stafford Advanced learning stuff but we're taking this one step at a time so the first step was just three doing some schedules to just provide those opportunities for staff so it might look a little different i d h building but there will be an at this will be part of our district Focus to that we're providing those collaborative opportunities the learning for students happens in the classroom instead of having to pull them out of the classroom to receive those services it so it wouldn't be fair to say like in fall like as a as a parent would I notice anything different in the classroom or like or maybe it depends on the student I don't know like what what is that look like cats more white parents would be experiencing and so the goal is not to experience pulling kids out of the classroom to have the proportional representation in all of these faces so we don't want to create The Stereotype threats or Lyft our district so you know if you if you as a board or talking to Community member it is and they're noticing those types of disproportionality so I would be something that we would want to continue to work towards as a district and then the most recent times that I've been in classroom which isn't everyday like you guys but it seems like we already in at the elementary level at the very least have a lot of small group work were or are teachers already working on kind of that small group proportional representation like a nice talk with me in one of the ICS trains we were Dead 1 like looking at how that actually looks in practice and that's your model and to me it didn't look back we depart from what I have seen before in her classroom so I'm just curious like that we were already kind of halfway there is this going to do this represent a lot of change for a lot of classroom teachers just interested in your reflection on Soto how it be different from you maybe what was already time and practice medicine I think the changes going to be that we're going to be more intentional about what happens during those small group work time so the magic is not just simply being in small groups but then what happens in those small groups so what talk about when we got to the identity relevant teaching and learning is looking at research around strategies like reciprocal teaching where we would have liked strategies the reciprocal teaching is like a in strategy worried you would be working with students on comprehension and I could transfer not just from the language arts classroom but math classroom art classroom and so we create some consistency for a student's in that experience. it is like O'Jays I'm losing words here it's the structure but then what happens within that is what we work on in Step 9 as the practice that we would be using within those small and then the other thing was just like I did practice go level I think I needed a refresher on and it said of Who's Who so there's a reference to leadership team then there's nothing like an equity lead hoping you could remind us like like how is that structured in terms of how the professional development is happening in the so-called governance but I guess just how things are being rolled out sure I think the biggest thing for leadership team there are there's a leadership team at each building and they are responsible for the planning and implementation of rics work so they will meet let's eggs it happens on a Wednesday so they're pretty good Seuss day prior to that they will meet us at leadership team they'll go to modules to plan out what the implementation part will look like and then the biggest growth I think for our district is that everyone on that leadership team will then cold Planet together and then each member of the team will work to present it to the staff and that's another way how you build efficacy and that's how you build confidence around doing this work was not just one person leading it and so they'll have the planning session and they literally do that for about 60 to 90 minutes so it's a huge commitment from the leadership team. And then they will implement it the following week with the entire staff and so if you think about our strategic framework that's one of the things we said we were committed to is getting her Equity worked out to more people across our employee groups because everyone is impacted by this work and everyone in and so that's one way our Equity leads the biggest thing I advocated for when I got here was yes I can be an all the buildings but I can't be there all the time and what the equity least do for me is they're in their day-to-day and so they push back on me and I'll talk like that snack right so they are like my go-to for what they are seeing in classrooms that I miss and what are they saying from leadership team meetings that I may not be at how can I continue to lead this work so the biggest thing is that they really push back on me quite a bit but they helped me cope so that I meet with our Equity leads to roll out the ICS for district-wide PD when we do it when we come back for New staff orientation and like I said before when I come to resent we might have new staff to this District into this organization they're not new to this world Isis territory today we have so many staff members who intentionally apply to this District because they want to do this work and what that Equity leads and I do as we sit down and we can go Planet together and we figure out how we're going to continue to support all staff across the district butts typically when we're doing our courageous conversations when we're doing our is dspd when we're doing our Equity I worked with them with Geoffrey Robinson to make sure we're working with the village to moving forward with how we can continue those TalkBack sessions light I just think it was just such an amazing thing for Community it's two-fold you have the leadership teams who plan and implement it and then you have the equity leads to meet with me to plan stuff throughout the district and to figure out how we can Implement those courageous conversations with inner ICS work till the leadership teams at the school site that are they where they established just to work on Equity work like an isolation are they leadership teams with just like those are the leadership team for all kinds of things right and if we would not deny I honestly might have been like an ICS this was just equity and we found out that Equity is in better than everything so we can't say this is like these are the ICS Equity people and everything we do in every department and so that leadership team plan they did a lot more effective minute they could be social emotional stuff for students so it's a lot of different things said that leadership team is responsible for that was but I had that name what is a challenge cuz I just been talking about Dave sounds like a lot of data what do you anticipate seeing at in terms of Art as we Implement more and I got more Copeland kokichi and go serving so we expect and I don't know what I mean I'm not saying this is going to happen in one year how old be able to show always Equity are showing up if you think back to two weeks ago when we look at any of our data but that would be the academic data that we saw that are biggest inequities with were with her students with disability labels on our black students do we want to see those inequities lesson or go away and the other piece that we talked about it as as as soon as we find one than equity and address at another one's going to pop out yeah we really want to focus on when we talked about not removing students from the classroom that something that has happened to our black students enter to students with disabilities in the past so by not doing that and by making sure that we have strong teaching strategies in the class do tonight what is should be better next year than what you thought of this year than in previous I got worked another dishes you can walk in and you when you see a whole bunch of black or brown students in this classroom what kind of course our class that might be it so we talk about leveling the playing field or like leveling out we talked a lot about star phonics is going to be huge right cuz I'm in kindergarten through 3rd and that's where it starts and then arm after if you want so aligning that across the district that's also going to be used and then we talked about our perception date about how the students feel connected to our school until it looking at all those datapoints as well I'm trying to ensure that our students feel comfortable while they're here but also giving them access to rigorous curriculum in that personal representation is is it's for everyone add to your list in terms of I think we've been there no ICS talks about that too we talked about proportional representation it's across all across the floor other questions thank you for all your work I just want to offer a couple of observations and what are some of the prospective parents in the district like many of us we go to the website and it can be information overload and hard to translate when you go from you know you're for our meeting or whatever it is about C3 teams how do you translate that into plain language. I understand and I don't know if there's an opportunity to you know to ask parents what questions they have is our parents there or did they go what's it look like for my child in the classroom and I don't know if like with the operating referendum if there's an opportunity for FAQ use or something really explain things and answers key questions of parents have and I could be helpful and that's where his AC I go I want to look at all these websites is very easy to put a news article news article link link and then you see it's a two-year . then two years pass and it gets a little stale on the website and you know what's happening right now I think that could just be parents would appreciate that I don't know the easiest way to you know talk to parents or whatever but just say what questions do you have about this work and then I would have precise plain language cuz you know we talked about ICS and see three teams and people will go what the heck is that you know they do kind of in a Translating that into language if they can understand would be helpful and I think examples like with what you're doing with staff is stories you know what you do in a first-grade classrooms and I look very different than what a teacher is doing in high and how this T3 teams work imagine it would be very different the other thing and I guess it's probably lose it Sceptre 13 it was not up to that yet but I just wondered about when you get back to go through this how do you make sure long-term you know as you get new in the new teachers come in new new new administrators how does this work on a continuing basis is not like we go through all four cornerstones and then you just stopped by this was wondering about that second answer that I think is thank you for the FAQ suggestion I think for as far as most of your Equity action plans and how you do it is we have we have to come in at the like the last two years we've done ICS training for all the new staff to come in and that's something that we're committed to I know Lori's going to and so we will do that every time the other thing at each of the building level so you're starting to like slang language for families when we first started this work what would I see as to what do ask you to do the two co-founders is that you draw your current model right sole we're students throughout the day and I know those of you done this work before you saw the proactive and reactive system and do an example of that is like if I'm a student and now I receive specialized design instruction and I go here and then I have a speech and I go here and then I go and so what are does they look at those current models and they try to find ways that they can offer that into the regular Ed classroom of the tier-1 instruction classroom and so they'll draw like what we consider plus and minus is around that and then where can you find Opportunities students to be in that classroom and so what we'll do is we'll constantly plan for any staff that's coming in will do it at the beginning of the year and then Mike worked really hard with the calendar this year to get PD throughout the year cuz you can't just do it on August 25th throw your hands up and say yeah we're done Equity is done we got it all together until developing that action plan is really important but ensuring that we are working to provide professional development for all our new staff and we'll have two days this year were our staff will get that and that's the plan moving forward thank you for sure I'll go ahead and leave that on the Wednesday professional development that when it's presented to all staff that is required that all staffers attending that when I really applaud you I think that's great cuz so often people can opt out of that work and I appreciate that and then you know I also really how far are the C3 team model and related focusing on what's happening in the classroom I think about where my expertise is more in higher ed and so often the history of that is allowed extra programs in what two students where there's an equity is so hard Shell station connected to power of what do you have lots of time resources people that represent that look like you and so were yours that hasn't worked since protect you call is Wildfire appreciate that at the same time I will save like I tended to your relevant teaching that was a huge part of my 1990s and part of me just really wish we could go faster but I appreciate it's so I guess the question I have for you all is are there this being a great opportunity for you to talk to the board are there things when you look at all of the indicator come with us are there things that you wish we were tweaking that we were changing that we are asking to help drive this work forward more because I really I really have a lot of trust like I believe in you too as professionals doing the operational things but I'm wondering what is it that we can do if there's anything that's on the top of your chair yeah I think and this might sound simple but when we were talking today we were meeting and talking about our district priorities and so it's important to let us know like what the community kids from us as far as communication that's helpful because yes we can get so into this work and so into the educational speak that if there is things that were saying that are then going to get lost in translation that's helpful to know then really like when we look at that and just simply looking for in shining a light on the inequities and then trusting our educator is that when they see those inequities that the action steps are going to happen and I know it's for us to come back with us so picture is example of a man Jamerson seen the data and then what that action Steps step looks like what's hard is in these presentations to be able to give an inequity we're sharing it with you sharing it with the leadership team they need some time to process it so having an immediate answer to what are we going to do about this data when you like we're all working with it in real-time of it it's an important piece to understand but I think just the fact that the board ask to see the data broken down in the ways that you have so that we're not just looking at all students but we're looking at those subgroups the super important so I think holding us accountable to that it is helpful and I think similar to what you said I can't I think all of our staff and we would love to see it move faster but we have to do it in a way that we don't end up going backwards and like they always tell us when to us where we're talkin about four hundred years of inequities we're not going to fix it in three and a half years for you but it's really it's the balance between let's go but let's move it a pace that's going to be sustainable was not wearing people out too and asking our staff to do there. They're already doing so much and so I won't it shot out our staff I preached all the work that they're doing they don't take days off either I connect with Jason so I really think that that's so considerate and to support them and to give us all Graces we all continue to lead in learning this work because there is not one person who has all the right answers since all I think it's cancer the support office and support our staff more importantly support support our kids because they deserve better yeah first of all I love all the equity in a Missouri's pieces I just they're really great and as you're talking about the seats Rico planning to serve Coke learn and this collaboration across the district and when how or if the are learner's are folded into that process and what what that might be what that looks like yeah I think a couple things we talked about call Planet coaster to Colburn. Starts to with us at the district level and us being a backup plan CoServ so like out of Mike's office he's yes the director teaching and learning but he's not responsible just for teaching learning for talking about ended identity relevant teaching and learning so how as an equity director I can embed some of them and I was that I have and then with Kate with the special item people Services I think that's important and I think all of us have acknowledged and we just talked about it today how do we truly includes to The Voice important to all of us and if you sent if you sit down and spend 5 minutes with our students from kindergarten all the way up through 12th grade they're going to challenge you and make you think differently so that's something like Mike said in Dayton real time that's something we talked about yesterday is that truly how are we going to include student boys and I always say this it can't always be the same students even when we talked about that is so crucial you have to be able to listen to all students because there's their experience is what matters most to us in this District so I yeah we have now is that the grow area for us and Something That We're committed to doing is how do we continue to get feedback from students without taxing them with more than what they're already dealing with like they're managing a lot too if I were to walk through the schools and randomly stopped kids his passing from classes and say what do you think of the ICS work that we're doing here in the district no I think we're this lives with students if you go to stop 9 and we talked about the identity and teaching and learning for all Learners was a size there is assessment capable learning so that that's another educational speak type of thing but what we want to do is we want to make sure you're basically that is students leading they're learning so that when we talked about assessments were talking about the assessment language that were using with students and that students are able to what they should be able to communicate to you is their progress towards like the learning outcomes within the classroom so what should change when you talk to students as you walk through the hallway is you know in the past they might say we did this cool butterfly projects and and that would be cool but we want to get them to is not. talking about butterfly project but how that relates to the science standards in fifth grade now they're not going to say I'm working on standard 7.92 but like I was able to identify these different parts of the ear Zack and blah blah blah blah blah I'm not going to be able to quote the standard right now but we want our students to be assassinated capable Learners where again we're not just us haciendo one time a year report in an hour that out to the board but that the conversations are between student and teacher around their progress towards those learning goals and I always think of this buying it by analogy as it needs to be more like say swim lessons how soon until the success criteria for students is very clear to them about how they move on from one level to the next and they have multiple opportunities to make progress towards that so it's not like a haha got you kind of Moana where is that they have a 1 time for formative assessment and that we developed a method of qualitative data Gathering focus groups or individuals you know and ask them some questions when you can talk about it and then you couldn't have different I know it's more things to put on the play I think we could be imagining him about getting student voice and not just stuff them in the hallway I just want to say how grateful I am to be here working alongside professionals like Siri and and the rest of the team it's my second week and we've had two meetings and aside from our one-on-one meetings actually I've had a lot of meetings and typically I probably would wait a little bit to convene a team and really and take a look that thing's some of this is selfish though if it's team building but it's because of the district's commitment to this work and understanding that while we're getting to know each other we're going to do the work and they're giving me a lot of information and I'm asking a lot of questions part of the reason it is thinking about what you just asked about what does the Board needs to know and what do we need to be accountable to to our community we have results policies and you're asking for data points right and that's a part of your role as board we have a lot of other data that we collect more data doesn't always lead to better decision-making especially when you're talking about complex Equity issues so it really matters for us to have a lot of time and put a lot of thought run into exactly what these things are so we'll come back likely later on and perhaps even after a board Workshop to take a look at what data points are we collecting what's really best telling her story because well we have plenty of data that will tell us what we already know we also know that there are things happening and other types of data that are going to be rich and probably in the form action conversations we need to have perhaps some of the professional learning that we need to do focus on instructional these practices in the classroom that will get in other ways right end and I I was listening in to the last board meeting and thinking about the school perceptions data and we look at that and we take that very seriously and it's one data point and it's an electronic serve answer the question is who the voices aren't we hearing and so electronic survey whenever we give it is probably not the way to get that data that doesn't mean we can't ask the same question so then we need to stay at what information do we really want to know can measure that Sue the school of perception survey and perhaps at a different time of the year we can pick up the questions that we really want to know how to get Affinity groups together and hold some focus groups and collect that data and we can do that with family as we can do it with soon we can do that with staff you talked a little bit today about the concept of State interviews rather than exit interviews right thinking about we know a lot of Staff including myself have come here because we are coming in to doing Equity work and wanting to do right kids so I think there's really rich data and taking a look at what's currently any kind of on the books for results Palace he's thinking about that and then we can take that to our leadership team and talk about what do we collect our and then what might we need to do differently and come back with some recommendations but I think the more that we can do that and it's going to be an additive process it will help inform the work that we know is going to be happening at the same time thinking about the see-through games of that collaboration coming to life is really exciting because we know through a lot of the research that's out there write the number one difference maker and outcomes for students is collective teacher at what is the right and that's really why we as a group believe that we can impact change and make a difference for kids that's the biggest driver of changing practice and that only happens when we have professionals around the table talking about data together and it will be different data points and we have new math curriculum new find expert I'm so it's exciting to see when I can see it here but I think having a graphic and having some talking points would be wonderful see how these things fit together and we can operationalize that so that's kind of why we had meeting to already today it's really exciting for me to join such an amazing team so thank you to Sherry for all of your work and leaving this then there's a reason you're being invited and the rest of the team to place is to Showcase this because it's hard work and thank you to the board for staying committed right on and we have on the workmen again in a couple months is that when Amanda's coming like I just noticed there was like two different we'll just say that was when Amanda is always a living document sorry. Yeah I don't have a presentation so on this document this is our student academic standards document part of it all reminders that live on this document from your that we align to our Wisconsin academic standards and we have a seven-year critical evaluation and Improvement cycle which is linked to this document when we talked about curriculum review the three-year process where we look at it updated standards we create some some goals and vision statements we align resources to do it with the standards on our vision anacondas up with a proposal we Implement and then we evaluate the program so the bullet points at the end of this are partially some things that we've already talked about that will be implementing this year and I'm the last Dwayne refers to the fired and health curriculum which is in year one of the evaluation cycle so many of you have already heard about this more excited about the phonics in math the ones that will be implementing at the elementary school both of these were pilots so we have some teacher experts right within our building that can help support this work and how this relates to equity is with our finest program we know that if we do foundational reading skills on that that's a strong predictor of future success for our Learners and with our math curriculum so this math curriculum was chosen because when we talked about small groups that it has a focus on building students reasoning and critical thinking skills through collaboration with one another so will also be supporting this work with our literacy and math coaches will be in the classrooms supporting not just students but more importantly the teachers so that you know we can we can learn from one another and create on some consistency for student says they go through the grade levels on I don't think I've talked about this as much but a piece of it formation is at our local cisa on which just supports area schools there is 7 cc's in the state we only share that one where she's at 1 who won so we have had their literacy and math specialist working at sis on talk about how to deliver curriculum in small groups and then something I came up with our language arts folks it's just we had a lot of new Step It Up by us in language arts and so we did create a vision statement this year and we're going to be looking at materials it's not part of the formal correction on my evaluation cycle so this just might be supplement some of that language arts curriculum but we're going to be continuing that work and we're lucky to have a tiara Rogers who just went through this whole cycle and our previous position and social Grant bring a lot of learning to our district as well and then Shawna Lucas on is an instructional coach that'll be supporting our teachers as well so we're really trying to build those coaching opportunities for our teachers about women listen sis and you all remember the presentation that rshs staff gave about the new classes that will be offered at the high school so that include Civics ancient and medieval worlds on the modern world in the most important part that you were here and there is were talking about all different continents throughout the world not making that specific to specific perspectives all-encompassing and then we'll have AP Psychology and an economics course in partnership with UWM for students to take college credit when we talk about Equity there we do look at our AP course offerings to make sure that those are is proportional representation in those it as well and then the last bullet point is our fine I didn't help curriculums health is this is one of the more important ones because that's our human growth into programs and this would be a spot where we do want student voice in here when we talk about what's worked so far with our human growth and development curriculum and what growth opportunities we might have on and so this is unique and with Johnson and that there is statutes that require that when we look at you and growth and development curriculum we have an advisory committee and I just put the quote that are representing a cross-section of Ali's opinion from the community and as a first step in this process will be involving many people throughout the community in helping to inform next steps with that so that could be a multi-year process just because this is more deliberate than say the music and Performing Arts Creek adoption that we did last year but again I think really important for his students when we looked at some of our Wellness data that that lives in the human growth and development curriculum make our students part of life allowed to be on that committee or are they is a set of collected separately for sure we want to hear about from students when we put together that advisory committee I know at least one something about messages at least once we've gotten the student email about the human growth and drama Cricket on so thick that up but I think that kid might still be here not sure but yeah that was my Ashley can you come to my question about that process are we are there any restrictions on with what we are allowed to talk about in human growth and development like do what you know I know some states is like you have to focus only on abstinence you know different restrictions I would say the most important part is that were focused on facts real excellent other questions no thank you so much consent agenda I will take a motion I move approval of the board will see how Carrie plays that one machine classes a board member of course we don't have any official on there I wanted to touch base about our work plan and linkage schedule so I wanted to ask some Initial Ideas past you all and then bring something to you about the August 8th meeting we don't have the adapter work plan but just to so we all get consensus so looking at draft work plan and keeping in mind a little bit of feedback that you guys brought up last time this came up so I'll take a simple simple one first time for cute communicators the draft had two different key Communicator sessions and I I do think it would be great to get those books back together if for no other reason you let Lori this house we typically have done that in October and November there's two potential topics I could think of so be on the entry plan I don't know just getting to know Lori would be the budget which should be timely around that time in October and October November there's always kind of heightened interest as our board exam results are out and people want it like early October going to talk about our budget so would you want the other one so quickly after yeah but there's no argument that's why I brought up so there's like enough fodder I think we could schedule to but we but here's my lead into my other day when I heard from you guys and tell me if I'm wrong last time is that the linkage concept gets kind of confusing people really sure what that is and I will pay for my perspective Town Halls I've actually been fairly productive even though they're they can have a little anxiety is very never know like what's going to come up but on the other hand knows we hear Rising things either way is that when people feel free to just like a bring whatever is on their mind so I think if they're carefully facilitated they can be really great so what I was wondering about is like maybe a key communicators I'm meeting Lori talking budget then rather than having in the past we've done a linkage in each bill and Here's my thought what if we did a an open Town Hall so like it's not necessarily oriented toward that school but to which technically it always was but maybe remarks will said about it say at both elementary schools in the fall and then essay is nshss in the spring but at all of those everybody is welcome and we frame it as more like bring us whatever is on your mind this is a for anybody rather than focusing on that one school and kind of its PTO members or it's so what we do lose is it when you have the smaller linkage groups with the multilingual always the parents of students with disabilities do you lose even though they're small in the ability to discuss things and if everything is on the table then I totally hear that and I those the spring was traditionally we've done those like for lack of a better phrase interest groups or like Affinity groups I don't want to I wouldn't want to get rid of those I like those ones but the ones that are just by there's no rationale really to meet you for having and it's just like oriented that water like I mean and you doing the inviting a specific song leadership people that maybe you should have a rather than everybody just common well we might want to start introducing the back health and physical education that doesn't you know what kinds of things you were doing and then if they have comments on it sometimes I think Louis has that ability sure I want a piggyback offset idea a little bit I like what Laura said before about the focus group type things of people that we don't capture very often in to me that Through My Lens straight to linkages in I've been struggling like the other one was really great however it was it was a lot of cheering support happy stuff until I started asking a question install so I went to hold out for a minute that thought about potentially recalibrating linkages for us just identifying five questions at work for all different groups and go in there that could give us a putting that aside I think Archie communicators and was put together a year-and-a-half ago and people that were really engaged and wanting to really be an accident might have different right now you might be new people in the desert and so I think either we need to do a call out again or if we're only need a dresser you should have a town hall we should be done with the communicator, Town Hall have any open we can make it like this in the topic we would like like half of it Topic open dialogue or like some some time where it's more open in the weekend do it in reverse but I think that's what I would prefer given them on a date or just finished teaching my class I would certainly like to talk to other school districts Barbie Effectiveness and efficiency Town Halls the come with some we're just going to come and yell at you kind of attitude and I don't find that helpful and so I want it I like much better when people we had a set of questions and if we use he communicated and perhaps making a larger boo you know we can get a we did get a much more vibrant conversation group so maybe we have to communicate his to any domestic you do and have that service without the label there going to be communicating to us and they did really understand that if the first their perspectives on what they're hearing Community CPAP the formality of a town hall can throw you off but there's nothing like I don't mind informal a meeting with people and we're already doing that and so if we just open up that time is rather than a sitting here in we'll come up with us and we could be informally engaging I don't yeah you know I do kind of like the idea of a town hall I mean I'll take it back to a place where we don't want to go but the To Kill a Mockingbird meeting that we had gold in the theater I thought was really helpful to the community at large there was there was a lot of yelling right like there some Discord but it was necessary I think for folks to be able to say their piece and speak their mind and I think it'll larger group like that you're going to get a little honest and open sort of dialogue from folks so I'm I'm not against the idea of a town hall in fact I kind of like that idea is challenges that people are aware speaking loudly and angrily made Rhino that in bold and the others that may not speak I would disagree with that I think you can manage that with the challenges moderating it in a forward testing results you know that could be a lot of parents are a lot of questions that could be a good opportunity to reach large let's not make assumptions what what would how would we structure it would we get an outside moderator you know when we get everybody understand we're taking an hour or so he communicated with we can gather some of the same ones we had before because some of them but also as Becky G topic on the media yeah budget possibilities of other ways to meet with students during the meet Lori one left we will moderate that is long as you have you know in in my past experience let had listening sessions Town Halls Etc usually when you set up some parameters people are really good at asking communicators but I was a couple things like I don't think necessarily people are going to better ideas on the five of us the people who've been through this process second you know sometimes I can't do another Zoom like that waxes and wanes sometimes people do on a focus topic like there's obvious things of the community needs to discuss so I think part of our role is to decide what are we going to try this time and then Flex to what swell and be responsive so long to respond to your suggestion Nathan like I'm not opposed to that but I am a little bit hesitant isolate Equity is the topic because I think like the degree possible I really want Equity just be embedded in our conversations about other things like I don't want to talk about like Ford do you know test results like separately from Equity right like that's the same conversation so I am I think if we do that like let's maybe like frame it as like let's talk about the ICS work and how it's changing our classroom practice and not like do you like like people are going to show up thinking you know such a wide range of things are going to be on the table I would say that the front Sebastian he communicates what that listen to me but I don't think are cheap I know they are increase the T communication really have them together a little bit of a couple of times that we were really knew about it. We need to get out we need to ask we have to personally ask specific people so that we get more proportional representation would be that's on us okay so okay so I wrote a lot of the feedback back I'm going to take a back to the suggestion I had about the traditionally and which is like I'm getting out of here cuz it's been like three years that we really had a full year of is by where we attended in the past is that like install we would to do visits linkages with peegeos at each school and then more recently added on top of leadership team. That's a lot trying to consolidate and that's what if it's just open and it happens you know we still have a linkage every year at spelling but it's not necessarily like limited to the PTO we keep our leadership team it is cuz I think that's different is different and I we don't really talk to them like that that's a great opportunity but I feel like we are sort of limiting to once you know we had no heat cheer last time that we eliminate set of insanity and so make them more productive more people show up and so then maybe what it is is not a Lincoln's Battalion listening session at aw a listening session are talking to us yeah an informal Manner and call the listening session and then the same thing at the each of the other schools and then we might get more people won't be somehow it'll be bred for Craigslist in paternity communicators is pretty intimidating as well okay I like you guys let's not do that anymore I don't know I mean I'm not saying we have to rename it but I know that there are likely people who are not thinking do they mean me and you have that do is reach out we didn't wait we were just has he tried to set it up and so maybe we do need another name it serve on boards and other organizations that can give us some track and interest so we do need to make everybody just think that they could potentially play I keep Communicator right by that I know that they're the people you could roll into the next procedure plan would like the process of planning Univision how do we go out and look like this just just doing a listings at sessions and even building we don't have to do like you communicate with just saying that we just listening sessions and then see from their some of those the idea also was to help identify future people the school board to serve on Sherwood seed to bring them into leadership roles that's part of what the end it rolls out and then we were busy they were helpful to the operating operating referendum and I only met with communicators that provide legislative it was a budget meeting in there that was very very big though probably before and the other one in here that was sort of a let me throw it one last idea and then I'll I'll try and gather our the last idea I had the last time we were okay there's like some other group said if he great if we met with and we've had mixed results and getting them started to engage in some of their own linkage so we called out like they did the ctia the Shoah Foundation realtor what if we like to come by now though so just try to this it would be a spring on a different Mission but I think there's a liquor there but there's a lot of muscle admission overlap where the stuff they would want to talk to us about would be like in a similar vein you like that pirate thank you for letting me steal that time. don't have it like any other like reports then I know but maybe if we could get can we get a snapshot of what we did the past year yes and so that we can all go to be marinating on that a little bit yeah we've done that before what was last year's talent that you said is it maybe bring him and I that may be impactful in other ways to us and we have our budget and and maybe we can talk about that early on where we're headed I want to hear about what they're going to do and they probably would like to know a lot about you know what the impact of the budget black Karachi from the other we have the money for the next Xbox really needs in the spring so maybe I don't know I have to ask Rebecca I had we have to ask yeah if we asked lost with the different groups we might I need to get an update on what they're doing and housing did you get an update on there when they going to do another study rentals and okay yeah I'll put that on there equity one of our goals for meeting with them is really looking at mission in Shorewood alright I'm keep thinking about that we have a break the rest of July for a next meeting is August 8th and I'll bring a pillow with like we can still speak that because it's not like you know chill in stone or anything so but but at the same time like because we do need to come up thank you guys will move on to our brand new superintendent report thank you. Okay well first before I get into the Special Report I just want to say thank you to the board for inviting me to join in this amazing Community to carry especially for shepherding me along the first couple of weeks I probably wasn't supposed to say that publicly but I appreciate it Jack and everybody else right for orienting me as I've been meeting lots of different people and I'm remembering people's names the second or third time that I've started interact with them I'm just really excited to be here I think hearing about the foundation of a lot of the work that has been done is really incredible and so sometimes for those of you who have been here understanding the degree in the depths of which you've been talking about systems it's really amazing and that's why the district is being invited to other places because getting into that deep level change is hard and it needs to involve Community level conversation so I think the conversation you were just having as a board about how engage with our community really matters and It ultimately. It does matter what we call our meetings that it matters how we refer to ourselves and our teams and what we're asking people for and as we have these listening sessions and repairing things I just thinking in the back of my mind will that's excellent because if we're hearing something at all for schools then we know we need to bring that conversation here and or in other ways or how do we communicate the great work that is happening in ways that people understand it and then can tell there verse about it so I'm really excited to get going with that and as I'm going to be doing my listening tour in the next I don't know. You should see my calendar and I'm eating people is also good for me to have her. conversation because as I hear people wanting to be involved I'll let them know that there may be a few communicators group and or another name for the group but we're looking for people to engage to help share a message and also have it be to weigh right and bring directions to us so are we were talking a little bit about that at our meeting this morning too and thinking about like what is that engagement really need to look like so digging into my report I've been meeting with a lot of people and everybody has welcomed me and it really warm fashion my first official day in the job was July 1st at the picnic and like I mentioned before I really enjoyed it I enjoyed following along for the tours sing Mike and Carl down at the Time Capsule ceremony and I'm getting a brief update about all of the updates and other things I might want to consider so many alumni I did I did sneak home to like clean up cuz it so hot but I did make it back to Hubbard Park I have been to Hubbard Park before I driven by but never been up to the lodge area so that was really neat and I was amazed to see how many people had been at the picnic and we're still at the lodge and didn't do what I did right I think that just speaks to the experience that people had as Sherwood alumni and the joy there was just a lot of joy and it is it it just made me so happy to be starting out that day with her people who are just celebrating Shorewood it was really awesome so I'm looking forward to next year's event right July 6 and with the Centennial for the high school but as well as Lake Bluff so it's exciting to think about the planning that will then go into that I won't say that again for Carrie will give her another week who are we have to start that planning I also want to just think Joanne dr. Stern key for all of her help and guidance and time spent with me prior to me coming officially as well as the rest of the disc L and then carving out time at the end of the year it made me feel very at home coming in to the district and knowing kind of Who belongs to what building and what things they're working as I really appreciate it a little bit of a heads that way but join and I will still be in contact and I really appreciate the fact that she'll be available and you know just a phone call away if I need to talk to her so like I said a lot of listening already A convenor administrative Council we convene another leadership team again today to talk about building these relationships feeling the these teams which is really important right about relationships are really the foundation of everything and at the same time there's what to do in a month we're going to be welcoming new staff here and as a part of like the planning and getting ready for new staff we have a lot of things we have to have them do and trainings to go through and modules and and then they really just want to get there been it's information right so they're a lot of things that we have to walk them through and and another question that we had as a team is how do we want our staff to feel those first days back we know there's a lot to do how do we want them to feel and so that'll be another part planning as we hurry that because that will be here before we know it so I just appreciate the team kind of going with the flow with me and all of my questions but I'm excited about the word that we're going to be doing together and with that I have shared an entry plan with the board before going to the engine plant I should mention since we were just talking about state budget so since your last meeting and invite the same Governor Devers as you know did sign the budget well there are additional revenues for schools it falls woefully short of what we need to keep up with cost-of-living increases as well as just inflationary increases across the board so Heather gave you an update last time about what that kind of impact is for Shorewood so that I'm going advocacy is going to have to be a conversation that we keep have and I also think thinking about key communicators and having our community understand the impact of that budget is really important my parents called me they were excited when they saw had surrounded it and so I was like oh need to unpack what this really means because it does make a good headline but when you take a look at what this really means for public schools it's highly disappointing so anyway we can talk about that another time my entry plans so I have shared a copy of the with the board will put that on the website I did put together a few slides just to summarize the content of the how to plan I'll be sharing this to with the village to including the village manager's memo to link to it and I just thinking again about opportunities to engage with the community when we have listening session I want to make sure that we communicate that out on that email as well so here's some highlights from my entry plan again the published document will look a little bit last year but I think it's important because I'm the public to see what I'm planning to do and I already started really even before I started so if you take a look kind of bet this framework I like to think and Frameworks it really helps me make sense of the work that I'm doing this is really kind of a modified plant study Act Right. Continuous Improvement cycle so I broke out the first kind of plan sexual planning is later but really what I'm here to do is listen and learn and as I'm talking to people even as I was at the alumni I'm listening for themes picking up on an Elsa how people feel as what their experience is like listening to like the dialogue that happens around different table it's very informative so sometimes people don't say can tell you a lot so that's really kind of what I want to do first before I know exactly what we need to do over there is some like actual planning we need to do it's important for me to really just take in everything that I can all the different information from people after that after 100 days I will share out my findings with you at a meeting and then we'll talk about how we take that information about all the good work that has been happening some new ideas and then how do we build and move forward together so it's exciting and here are some of the goals so I structured my goals into kind of five main areas the first one really being pain relationship between the board and myself it's critical all of those relationships really have a ripple effect right through the rest of the organization so building a strong and trusting relationship with the board is the priority for me and making sure that we have just clear expectations and I look forward to just having an opportunity to engage in a workshop and so when we talk about data that we need to see and what things mean and what they don't mean it'll be really good for us to be on the same page so that we can make sure is an administrative team were being really clear with you and the community about what it is that you would like to see from our strategic priorities and student growth some taking a look at a lot of data thinking about stakeholder engagement how I can meet with a lot of the different groups you were just talking about and Kerry has successfully schedule probably half of those meetings already on my calendar and going through a lot of different community members so also thinking about other folks and other opportunities which will probably happen in August and maybe as more people come back to the Village to think about maybe some more creative ways to do meet-and-greets with people like I get up really early and take a walk who wants to come with me you know and we'll meet at a park or something and just kind of walk and talk so we'll have more opportunities for things like that may be a little bit further down in the summer I'm also taking a look at organizational capacity so how efficacious are we as an organization are our systems and processes set up to achieve the outcomes that we want to achieve and then thinking about how do we use research and data in our decision-making so those are the kind of I'm in areas timeline wise I started before I started so in the visits that I made throughout the spring I was able to meet with principals and go to a different armies I went to the swing event I got some a lot of families that way as well so the second phase is really listening and learning that's where I am right now the sharing building and planning will come later and then I like I said I will give every part out to the board and the community in the fall and perhaps with some recommendations will see key action steps and I have articulated quite a few in the actual plan but here is some bad I just called out one is a shop that we plan to have some time to talk about governance and expectations I'm also taking a look at all of our academic programs assessment School growth plans that was some of the work that we did as a leadership team today is taking a look at are we meeting at the district office to do to support the work that the principle suit isn't worth of the work that the teachers do to make sure that students are getting what they need and you can do some backward planning so that there's some alignment then I'll be thinking about our communication we're still in the process of hiring a Communications specialist and at the same time it's an opportunity to think about how do we effectively communicate and how do we get that two-way communication back to us stakeholders Community Partners I'll be attending a three-day ICS summer Institute with tiara Rogers and with Sherry the last week of July meeting with quadrant D the North Shore area superintendents and leaders and then see someone is well I'm really excited to network with folks as I am back to my roots and southeastern Wisconsin it's really incredible to see who's all in the room and yes lots of people that I worked with in the past and I'm really headed to re-engage West but really excited to do that and then again thinking about like what our organizational functions are do we have the people in place that we need to and then ultimately what do I hope to present back to you we were talking a little bit about this and in the conversation after the presentation from Sherry and Mike is I have a lot of questions right now like what are those key Equity indicators that we really want to have as a district and we have a lot of things in our results policies are already we can call out certain data points that are really going to tell us how we're making progress towards that work and it will probably have to go a little back and forth on that but I do think that if we can really be clear about well as you know when you're doing research if you ask the right questions you end up with a better result I think we just have to keep asking over and over and over like what is it that we really need to know how do we know that and that will help us make better decisions thinking about Communications priorities Opera please for improvement in terms of our organizational functions and then thinking about how do we maximize our staff right when we think about resources that we have our people and time are our two main resources it isn't just always about money so however maximizing our resources to meet the needs of our students so that's a high-level summary again we'll make that available so it does look a little bit nicer and like the it will be available on the website but I would welcome any feedback and questions or if they are people that I'm missing groups etcetera please let me know because this is this is my time you put a lot of work into the century plant I think it's excellent I really appreciate it this is on par with Joanne Sanchez playing which is saying something that kind of was like it's the same again amazing and so they're also I appreciate the timeline breakdown as well just that helps me but then also the breakdown by so do you think probably then first or second Lee meeting in October would be like finding probably November I think I'm going to get around the classroom as I do want to attend staff meetings at the same time there's just a lot of stuff that we need to get through at the beginning of the year so I want to give people a little bit of time and same thing with students right I wanted to meet with you a little later and have them for two months straight that seems like a sweet so we can talk about that and forward data amazing okay we have a superintendent's consent agenda do you want a soda even though so I can send to Jen Dimension I think we have people here that people may want to you want to do a okay heading down we we got a short little report on that I have one question on it. Just wondering about like I got plans for maintenance and that doesn't need to be answered today. just wondering why did we think about what that would require and I thought so but I assume I think I guess thank you so much I'm Erica what time the former attwater PTO president of projects through because I propose that we found it so for maintenance it is being built with wood that will not require maintenance it will age down to look nice I will have metal roof and then Sean has partnered with Andy Shack lady who's our General on it to make sure that it all meet all of the qualifications so this is just the structure there will be the Landscaping involved in it which will be a paid to will come up next spring which the PTO will fund also I think in partnership with the landscape architect that we use so don't I know you're trying to everything and hopefully be low maintenance situated you know where the swings used to be between the EC in the tennis courts oh yeah and right now there are picnic tables attention is that the PTO box in a little Free Library that's what he structure right in the middle of the pack grassy spot and then it's 88 things and Fenton entire classroom and this is Jessica and Janet reinhofer division they proposed it 6 years ago I think so be done just in time for my last kids but thank you for saying that moved out application I hope you enjoyed our always feeling meeting thank you for being here so we need approval of the super dentist 2nd and ocean has featured or dance now is your arm say nothing in person we can open it up for zoom buddy online no I mean okay so let's review to do items and I can so I'll bring back a proposed Lincoln schedule and after I talked with Lori J carry maybe Circle back with you individually and I'll be on our August 8th agenda under board governance and I'm also I think she's not here anymore but sure he mentioned something about it for ages conversations session with us I'm going to find out more about that and see if we can get on our calendars which is reminds me of the other two do you I need a herd from Becky but I need everybody else's out of town. bills and like yours I sent you an email asking but it was close to the holiday and I forgive you but I do need that so that because I would like to work shop around assessments and then we talked about our to taking in a little bit so and I know Lori wants to be there for that as well and looking at colleges so now I'm here and that's my response after 5:30 tomorrow into the end of no I'm leaving I'm leaving the 16th I'll be back on August 5th and then we have our annual meeting August 22nd is great to have friendly faces in the audience there so thank you very much for inviting people personally yourself if you're not too shy it's are we doing in the auditorium who did the artwork if anyone wondered what annual meeting is Community approved by our ability to Levy taxes so prize nominee for sure but I was there and if we need to if we have business we need to do a weed may have a short meeting prior to that we've done it before that's where the TV G. Community picnic and the alumni reunions I think you did put it together if it was a really great event and Community people I go to some characters little stroller and I said I would do a long nice and don't know we're coming to plan the big slide there in the parade we had a huge turnout on great and then we were there so we had better work on that we continue to be thoughtful about our engagement and what are messaging is to community members students and always for us in everything we do so I just shut up what we could do something here I'll find out I know I did I didn't come up for something I was here for a specific or have you guys now holler at me and I'll let you know he did really well I really appreciated the observations that you made I appreciated the questions that you are asking because it helps us then go back and have the conversations at the administrative Council level so thank you for that great
