hello and welcome to the April 23rd 2024 meaning thanks for being here in this is to adopt our agenda when change word to the agenda is to table until the next meeting item 6 a.m. elections board officer since I'm having power is out of we want to make sure everyone's here for we will do that next meeting message any objection all in favor are are students are leaders who challenge themselves to grow and a you've academically pursue their passions navigate change learn continuously and contribute to the common good so we'll start focusing on her staff so staff appreciation is just around the corner so I'll start with some great news we received over the weekend about Kelly Steiner she was awarded Wisconsin Society of science teachers excellence and Science teaching award award is given annually to people who outstanding contributions to the Improvement of Science Education in Wisconsin so on behalf of the Sherwood School District we want to thank Kelly for all of her hard work and many congratulations very deserving I'm also highlighting a staff member I say as teacher Evan Schmidt is partnering with secure Futures and organization that empowers teams with financial education tools and mentorship Evan will be featured on a Fox 6 News segment in May focusing on credit scores the segment is part of a year-long sub some Financial topics including x62 require the personal finance course for high school graduation thank you to Evan for being a great example of what we mean when we say Excellence means more here moving on to recognize some parents and volunteers our community because we depend on our partnership huge shout out to parents and volunteers for a working hard at Atwater Elementary in the Jackson can our child publishing Center to help the fourth grade students get their books made this particular cohort of students missed the opportunity how to become published authors due to the pandemic with the help of volunteers from the Senior Resource Center they are getting the kids backed up to speed and then finally moving on West likes congratulations to our girls softball team who defeated Cudahy 17 and great job to the girls soccer team who had back-to-back wins last week over Brown Deer and Brookfield Academy and then working on thank you so much and results and talk about that dual credit Force participation and District education for employment by Mula one of our students that and then some of our councillors from across the district and so Niello is a good example of some of these other Pathways that students have the opportunity to participate and within our school district and all of these pathways are highlighted in our academic and career plan which the state recently combined with an education for employment and then we had to put a good acronym with that so it's the E-40 ACP plan on but we thought we'd start off by just having Niello tell a little bit about his story and then we'll go into more of this was provided for all students during their time specifically for my Syosset Mueller all handed over to you to go to start awesome thank you so much from you have to excuse my I I I got to scratch my eyelid right now but you don't want to miss this cuz I want to show my appreciation for the program my counselors and I want to see a day we open a pathway for me growing up was very Hands-On like I work my dad remodeling houses I worked on a farm for a little bit so super Hands-On work and I when I came to Shorewood high school you know I notice I wouldn't have hands on things to do I notice a lot of schools offer welding you know after mechanics and I realized Roman didn't have that so I'm going through high school I was a little lost you and me and just didn't feel like I have many options or not but I didn't go to my counselors about it and as soon as I what's my counselors are like we got you you know what I mean so they they said you know that start college now programmed a percent that's me and they made it very evident through all the students to see as well which I appreciated that I know I'm not the only one that took this and yes or what show that's me I got very excited I gave it gave me hope give me that okay there's stuff that I like to do you know what I mean I can go out right now and start so that was a very very hopeful for me I've also heard I'm I supposed to a Mrs Murphy earlier today and she also told me that when her daughter was going through High School you want something she went through that and she was able to take sign language you know so even languages you know and I wasn't even if I had an option do more than one class as well I could have done the canex you know I could have done a whole bunch of stuff so there's one fortune in my way schedule is super packed but if I could have if I wanted to let you know so that I was super grateful for that opportunity want to say that I opened up to you know a big door for me I'm going to go to welding I learned a lot on there very nice of them ATC. how do you say this orientation was super super helpful to the people were really nice yeah it was really smooth process throughout the whole thing and our counselors made it really easy for us to understand and really good grasp on what we're about right on I'm so yes thank you for listening and that yeah I hope it sticks around so if we had it will kind of go through more of the other option is that are included and then at the end if you have any questions you can go through them but basically this just team put together or academic and career planning Pathways which high school counselors work with kids as Niello pointed out about placing them into classes not just in the high school but they'll talk a little bit more about classes that are available to students outside the school and a lot of this work starts at immediate school level I know many of you have had kids go through the system so you know about those transitions from 6th to 7th grade getting them into sis and opening up the experiences to some of I like those that we have offered their but then the eighth grade transition conferences really where we kick things off on students having some options around the starting to plan for Life After High School so pass it over to Scott to kind of get in do the specifics of the ACT plan so just introduced everyone who was a part of this we have the three high school counselor so I'm Scott Brown Molly Norris is here as well and Jennifer a what is here but she's in the other room finishing a presentation with children's so hopefully she'll pop over here as well and then it Sis is Julie Wells and so our vision the crew Readiness Vision that we created as a team and sort of thought through is that students pursue their academic and career goals through course offerings early college and Technical School opportunities as well as Partnerships with other districts the ACP program at the Sherwood School District ensures every student has prepared for Life After High School no matter what they take the man handed over to Julie hotel. We'll talk a little bit about what sis does and then we'll jump the high school at SAS we start talking in like November of eighth-grade year and we all like studies class rooms actually look this way so I'm like okay everybody look out the windows we're starting High School like this is your first step and we do a lot of stuff in 8th grade so by the time they get to the first day of high school in 9th grade that they are like okay we got this I always say my favorite thing to do is run into 9th graders that first week of school and say okay do we miss anything and I love when they roll their eyes and say 4 months we knew what we were doing okay we did it then I'd like to highlight our partnership high school counselors do 949 which means they have nine contact points on starting in eighth grade with our new incoming night for Rising 9th graders all the way through the first semester so they come and help us register they come and we've High School palooza which is at the end of May will come do tours given by students that was a student idea he said councillors are very nice we'd like to talk to a real student do our student guides give our tours we haven't come to do a Q&A day we do an online I'll look for all the resources the high school has to offer we do a big unit in our social studies before the winter break I'm called Game of Life and we start with playing the game of life that we all had him 70s and the 80s get an opportunity to plan research a career Lana budget you know. Surplus budget do you have a deficit budget they have to pick where they're going to live the rent I know we talked about that we never used to pay taxes and insurance and for your cell phone all of big reality check which is really fun for kids to do you know how that kind of we're experiencing this but it is in a really safe like really fun I'm think about the future and we really start talking about like what are your interest what are your skills we identified that in your individual transition conference so I meet with every 8th grade family and we talked about things your student is interested in and then we pair it with things about high school like and classes on courses at the coursework clubs and activities volunteer opportunities I thought except the kids eat for each child that their interests and then we had them off to the high school we also did a career day today this year sees me right before winter break and it was really fun cross-curricular every subject taught a different lesson about careers and it was art with our pilot year we had professionals come in and it was it was really a success and we look forward to doing that going forward with our middle school and was very cool lot of fun all right back to you the high school so I want to start off by just talking about many of the additional learning opportunities that we have beyond the Shorewood High School curriculum we have a fantastic curriculum but there are students who are looking for some different like me low want to look outside of Shorewood and we have a number of opportunities that are students take advantage of one that many students take advantage of is the early college credit program this is a Statewide Rover where eligible mostly Juniors and seniors can take college classes we are so close to UWM so a lot of students will explore their interest if their accelerated and things like math and science they can take those classes at UWM get college credit and sort of begin College potentially well ahead of their peers sometimes that can even count as High School Credit as well then there's the start college now program with Niello referenced a really great program where students can attend technical technical schools and make you see if courses are closest and take classes like well then we had students Take cooking classes mechanics courses that we really don't offer they can go and learn that credit that is always transcribed on the Shorewood High School transcript as well and again get a head start on some of those college credits we do now have a number of dual enrollment opportunities so Evan Schmidt was referenced earlier he has created an economics course taught at Shorewood High School where students get high school credit and college credit UWM and many of the UW colleges and there's also going to be a one credit economics class that you can take with financial literacy at the same time and then we have numerous AP classes again Opera News for Students to take that test at the end of the year and receive college credit we have a distance learning program where students want to take classes online that we don't offer or they want to accelerate in math or science do that over the summer most typically but we also have students interest in different languages a Korean or Chinese where they will take these classes online and then we have a special agreement with you choose which is part of the Walk a school district where students can take a number of online classes the number of AP classes that we can't offer being a smaller School free of charge so there's quite a few opportunities outside of Sherwood will that students can pursue if they want to all right in terms of kind of the academic and career planning that we is the counselors do at the high school is we spend a lot of time with students every grade we're talking about horses selecting courses that we think are going to fit their goals obviously there's change and we understand that but we try to give them those options help them make selections that fit there interest their personality their values we always are checking on graduation requirements and ensuring that students are making progress towards graduation if not trying to figure out ways in which we can get the credit so that they do all grass in four years the counselor spend an hour or so with every Junior and their families and caregivers talking about post-secondary planning so this is an opportunity where we individually can we talk about you know if they want to go to college where you looking what do you need to do how can you prepare for that if they're looking at the Wharf horse you know what's what are some jobs available in the area so a plethora of options individualized for the students we doing number for students who are interested in college we do a number of college application workshops we have one in the summer we do lunch Workshop so that stings really can be prepared for that rather application process and get the support that they need and then we also deliver along with some of the mental health work that we do a lot of career Focus lessons as well soon 9th grade students take a Career Cluster survey so those are there 16 designated federal job areas and based on their interests and sort of gives them an idea of where they might fit you talk about goals time management yeah being a good high school student in 10th grade students do more career research more specific research through sort of a career profiler wear specific jobs based on education level are matched to their interest and then 11th grade we talk what are you going to do after high school if College here are some tools that you can use to search the Wicket price to look at cost to look at Majors on Soca how competitive is the schools are and also how do you build a good read so that when you do go out into the world be at work or college you can highlight those accomplishments couple of other things that are coming down the pike which we've been talking about with students is that next year u w system is piloting a direct admit system where they're going to look at transcripts at the end of students junior year and admit them with no application necessary so that information is going to go out to caregivers in May and then of course you know we help facilitate a lot of the college reps that come to Shorewood high school we usually have about 65 to 70 come and we want to make sure that students can meet with those those people and really get to know those campus do quite a bit that that were involved in when it comes to this sort of academic and career planning for always thinking about ways to make it better and ensure that we reach all kids and it is a process we recognize that we try to stress to kid dad you know your your path might zig zag it might take some your turns and that's okay alright then this last slide with outline some future goals so we talked about the economics and financial literacy options for students we are creating what's called a career pathway in our existing computer science courses for students and we're looking to expand that to other areas basically what it helps guide students toward certifications that that would serve them well in the future so we're looking to add on a Java certification for students that take our computer science programs part of the requirements around that is to have an accredited student Club so we're going to start a future Business Leaders of America Club that's going to kind of layer on top of the investment club which has been really popular by give us those good somewhere opportunities to participate in a national stage with student clubs and mr. Brown has already talked about kind of the whole plant that starts at freshman year for shs students along with the track that MIT enrollment program which were excited to provide for students next year so all this is a CPE for a plan which will be posted on our website but we hope so. back on a yearly basis kind of update you on the whole things are going and always come back to these future goals and things that were working towards this is such good information and I don't know if you would share this with eighth grade parents but I think they would be really interested as well and thank you for sharing it with I've heard I have an 8th grader and 11th grade as you know interesting / cellarius to compare what you told me with the fraction of information that I got something for that but I'm happy for all students that we have this really well the resources that you know grateful to that much as you know that even though we're a small list of students access to things like in a languages that we can't offer in person and when it really like I had was whether we are able to help with Transportation so like I'm the only one MATC are we able to help at all or they on they can about our own you know I have a car personally know so that you have to also consider that you know about yeah I also want to add on the even bigger door to is they offer applique a real jobs and also real fight with my Advanced and off and Welding. Go ahead and fill this out and we have an opportunity for you which is really tough question how does your play look then if you're taking a couple classes out of me she she she is just every Tuesday night so I have I have tons yes once a week and I have the opportunity to sign up again go to college mecc continue with those courses but yes it's not too crowded as an affected too much you know, but I know that students have to choose more than one you know I might be a little more difficult so there's that yes can I just add some into that to just because I Praxair near UWM we had do have so many that do that and I'll lot of it was classes happened during the day so that's why I sometimes logistically doesn't work out or where I mostly Juniors and seniors can make it work of their schedules might be a little bit more flexible let the nice thing with mhec in a lot of the start college Now options they do offer evening classes so make that work sometimes even better couple comments today couple questions as well first of all this is a really robust program I really appreciate the collaboration between sis and the high school and there's so many points of contact it's it's really remarkable so in a kudos for all your work of younger children this is not been on my radar yet how do you Market it to families in the community cuz it seems like such a robust offering that we can say look at what you can get by having your students here are some things you can do I mean it's kind of something that I could says they're working with counselors get introduced to it I can just tell you from being a sis we're just kind of preparing them for the high tomorrow really talking a lot about these opportunities but I think that's an opportunity for a just because we are uniquely pose very closely to those most colleges inexperienced parent point of view I might initially asked how many AP offerings are there not realizing it's much broader than that like I should actually look much wider participation looking all these different like you track numbers over time is it in are there any particular is it there in a lot of students are attracted to it what do you speak to that I don't think that's a data point we've collected before tomato finally I just helping with the family for us but I'm done it for a cliff I can just speak to you like me low doing the start college now program will you seem like a very big increase in student interest there which is really exciting because of just the technical side of things that really brought sounds like the elective offerings and because it start college now it's always do a credit so meaning that it's always going to be by school credit and college credit so I think I guess you're probably up to 45 this year but last year has two or three so even more so year after year I talked a lot about it since then to you know it's like trying to spread the word you know what I mean cuz I'm the information is in you know in the student support room you know I'm in front of you you know but a lot of people don't know or care to look like I care for you. Look at what the posters are stuffy nose so they do make it pretty obvious there but you got kind of look so I've been using word-of-mouth this is get the word out you know. Like my younger friends would say in the Haven know if you're interested in this route do you know and they have more than just technical school as well you know so we've always had lower numbers than that but to Jennifer's point it is increasing the early college credit program though has been pretty popular I don't have exact numbers but there's probably at least 25 kids per semester who utilize it and you're looking at kids who are so there may be Beyond Calculus BC and they're taking really higher-level math or maybe they're hate taking really higher level physics or you're just having kids taking a philosophy class that they're really interested in such a big variety is acceleration route is is one way we see a lot of it but then also just exploring interest and we actually in each eighth grade transition conference we start with what your student is interested in and so if you're in if your student says hey I'm interested in and then fill in the blank then I'm having been around at the high school counselor quite a bit I offered him a Mabel sick child really loves math and interested in economics oh did you know that we offer at the high school part we have a partnership with UWM and I'm offered economics class starting to get kids even if I do have to say it often okay I'm telling you these really cool classes and you can take me as a freshman so we are they complained to me that I've told them all these really cool things and you can't cook them if they don't fit in because we paid $5 for those, one of those or another place though is a conversation start basically because of students that I love to cook and I want to own a bakery someday then I say what did you know I got not freshman year but we try to bring that up if it if it matters. is an interest as early as a friend that's great one last question and I don't know if this is the right group of a question do we follow up with students afterwards to go do you feel like you were prepared and it's at certain points after graduate we do a senior exit survey so we do ask some questions about like how they utilize the counseling department and in what capacity and some of the some of the data points do talk a little about that showcase that afterwards I know that that's been an area that the district has wanted to gather data I don't know where that is beyond once we leave here then after they leave he got a board meeting but I think like the last time we tried that it was like maybe something to bring the strategic planning even Highline but you know there is a national Clearinghouse but it doesn't sound like we subscribe to that but it really tracks how many students persisted overtime in college in addition to some other data points I don't know if it's listen to like the granular questions about you know specific to your high-school planning but we could turn into that but I was just curious because what do you know sad about like Hands-On learning reminded me of when we had to Horizon students here and they just talked about how like the standard parking like wasn't working for them either Robbie so I wondered if there was like either you had noticed an opportunity or Explorer got like sort of Dino pitching in New Horizons yeah any any student Sherwood High School New Horizons has the ability take those classes so we we talk about it when we go into the classes is Miss around mentioned every year we going to the integrated Wellness classes to talk about course offerings and what is available and credit requirements and that's part of the conversation that we had with students so we do connect with all of our student body in regards to that and then when it comes time to meet deadlines for eccp Star College now we will communicate that out to caregivers as well but it's been really great the partnership with Julie I mean even today she and I and a and a family had communication about distance learning opportunity to take a language that we don't offer here so I mean it like it's endless and how many connections we can make and it's it's been a it's been a great partnership for that to help connect family what is Cassiopeia Michiana Eye Center thank you I'm just wondering do we have our new public comment statement now. sorry I just realized I didn't have it handy I can hit the highway yes you are you sorry should have thought about that all right now we have our first opportunity for public comment and Jaxon and thank you getting ready for the boardwalk on his public comments public comments are limited to three minutes per person per Wisconsin's open-meeting law and guidance issued by Wisconsin's attorney general we cannot engage in such discussions or act on items not on the agenda however we will follow up with speakers after the meeting or add items to a future board agenda for purposes of addressing the matter further we do not permit discussion of people's current or former staff or job can the board is also reached by email at bored at Shorewood that K12 wi us I will open it up for any and then if you would like to make a public comment you are joining us online you can unmute yourself and just let us know your name and address and I read all that just for fun all right okay well we will move on then to the there will be another opportunity for public comment and we'll move on in our agenda to her superintendent's report we are making Jack juggle. thank you so much. I'm going to keep my remarks relatively brief because I want to share my time with my joint and Sherry Tucker. update about math leveling up as a follow-up and exciting work that's taking place but first I did want to share a couple of pictures so again why Excellence means more here so as I mentioned earlier congratulations to Kelly's diner for her outstanding work every single day and not just because she received the award but just who she is a teacher and how she shows up for her colleagues as well that's cool we appreciate her very much and I know right you can see her outside ending art teachers were missing the cell Corte but this was from last week at our art show at the Shorewood Public Library they were greeting people right there as you walked into the library and it was absolutely fantastic the weather was terrible the library was packed I just want to do I took a lot of pictures I'm not a very talented photographer and then as usual I run into people and I start talking and forget that I was supposed to take more pictures but I just wanted to Showcase how I mean our art staff is and the joy in the beauty they bring and bringing creativity to our students so you can just see at that bottom left right some of the the patrons in the library and also parents and students who were wondering I'm to find their artwork because it literally took over the entire Library it wasn't just in a section so soon as really did have to wander and find their art there's an absolutely beautiful time I love Dad and after that I ran over to the sis in the rain to see the welcome for 6th grade families and the transition meeting which was also very well attended so thank you to principal Rodgers and her staff for a welcome and people so I haven't showed you this in a while because we've been talking about other things but it's always good to ground ourselves in our mission statement at pretty growth and Excellence for all and just a reminder of our annual strategic priorities that we talked about back in August at the annual meeting and these are a part of our five-year strategic plan night vision 2025 and tonight as I stated Mike and Sherry will be walking us through that first pillar about academic master and authentic learning talking specifically about math leveling up and later on the agenda director of the service is Heather Haviland will be walking us through something through that fourth pillar and sustainable operations as we continue to talk about how we are trying to tie our priorities and make a direct line to our resources so that's work that are administrative team has been doing for the past wow it seems like forever doesn't it for months so we started those conversations back in January with our budget engagement sessions ended that with a budget workshop in March and then really took a look at our internal budgets and federal grants and I are taking a look at how we make sure we're maximizing our resources and practicing fiscal stewardship so one thing I will say before I turn it over it our work is always on going we received some wonderful news today that will bring to another board meeting because this is merits its own agenda items do today DP I released the 2023 joint Federal notifications from i d e a and we is a school district are not disproportionate and any identification area placement area or discipline area with regard to students with disabilities so this is a testament do a lot of the hard work that everyone has engaged in including the board specifically with ICS but also just our ongoing courageous conversations in the work we're doing and another thing we'll talk about later on is some work our administrative team we're also coming into learning and always improving our systems so we'll be attending the sale Academy Academy through awesome which is the Wisconsin administrators Association it's a very well-known long-standing Academy play focus is on continuous Improvement so when we think about her ICS work is that foundational work that continues to grow and everything that we do but what we learn in the processes that we bring back from the sale Academy will continue to help us operationalize practices and continuous Improvement Cycles so we're really excited about that and I'll leave it at that because the rest of the items in my report will talk about when Heather comes and presents and I'll turn it over to Sherry and Mike some help transitioning the slides Welcome to our two favorite introverts bring all the enthusiasm I thought we're going to have to come up with a theme song when you come up here that's a really good idea walk up song yeah we have one already seen you back again that ages and dates me so good evening everyone thank you so much for having us on director joint and I are ecstatic to be here I think a couple of Segways that doctor Berger spoke of his one when she talked about the Arts and being able to see our staff collaborate we talked about see three teams in our staff collaborating it's really collaborating here in our systems and our structures that we have but also collaborating outside of school so we can see opportunities for our students was referenced earlier so back in February which seems like a long time ago we were able to get together co-founder dr.lee Strattera and the Steve Rogers one of the ICS coaches and as you can see numerous people from the district so I want to give a huge shout out to director joint Ciera Rogers our principal that's is A Christmas Tale a specialist throughout the district Jennifer our Advanced learning coordinator Steve Andrews High School math teacher Joel any Chick another high school math teacher Sammy palmisano and math teacher the Intermediate School in Saint Peter and Paul represent station from the elementary school middle school and people who work throughout the district and it was it was amazing to see and I'll talk about next about how it aligns and talks about with rcc's which is something we're committed to it so if you think about look at specifically 2 through 5 so the first one the system and everyone in it is responsible for creating successful outcome for our Learners is dr. Berger said we're fortunate that we have a board that's committed to this and I was super exciting news to hear about DPI in the work that we've been able to do I'm also staff collaborate to create employment and assess a cohesive instructional model some of the work that director joint has been doing with adopting the new Ela curriculum and this with a new matricom that we've had a lot of teachers are using this year too I'm too high teachers from across different grade levels anyone in education knows that some of the greatest things is when you can have 6th grade teachers talk to 7th grade teachers in middle school teachers talk to high school teachers and thinking about a cohesive instructional model which definitely eliminate some of the barriers and accessibility issues for our students because we want them to have the same opportunity and then Learners are intentionally proportionally represented in all learning environments that's something we're committed to we've been committed to and we talked about the structures and systems sometimes the structures in C I was having a wild for certain individuals to be in classrooms and we just have to be honest about that that goes back to the history of marginalization women since with disabilities and students of color weren't allowed in certain things just because of the way the structure and system was set up and I think it's the most important when our staff worked collaboratively to build our Collective capacity it was amazing to be in the room doctor nurse was there to see our staff worked together and talk about what they believe in and they're all committed to this which is huge when you are thinking about how you can remove this work for us so we talked about realigning our staff to fit the needs of our students something that the high school did I just want to give Tim Kenny & Amanda Jayne Merz him in that leadership team a huge shout out they just started working on how they can look at their see three teams with an asset-based lending and they had their staff talk about all the credentials they have so it's really asset base and our staff do a lot of stuff and they have a post-secondary degrees they have licenses and so many different area I only looked at it they're like all I have a collie down the hallway who can help me with this and so that's a way that we talk about our asset base learning as well and then realigning our staff to fit the needs of our students and then that segues into our framing an academic identities I just really want to focus on the second one ICS is a framework it is a framework that allows us to look at the structures and systems it's not a way to place blame on students or families or staff members truly looks at structures and systems have been in place for a long time that have prohibited certain individuals from being able to access certain things so when we think about the structures and systems we're not talking about our staff we're not talking about students or not talking about families being able to do something that the deficit base we really talked about the structures and systems that we have here in our organization and that's what I see us allows us to do so we really focus on the second one that's how mine are current math structures and sequencing service barriers to accessing high-quality teaching and learning for some Learners and so we're really thinking about those structures and systems and who has access to that and what those structures and systems are allowing our students to do and similar to what everyone has said the night is what are they able to take and how are we offering like a whole curriculum that can meet the needs of our house who are all of our children the whole child yeah so we we started the session off with some of the background work that Sherry just talked about but then we went into looking at data on the status of new to you it was a way for us as staff to look at the same data that you all look at us aboard the kind of used as a measuring point for how it how is our system doing and serving our students needs in math and so we've seen the fast bridge data so shows on the early mass in the garden and first grade student results the fastbridge outline 2nd through 8th grade and then we use their creativity and ACT scores to see again how how we're doing as an overall picture and what we've noticed this is not new data to you that one of our biggest gaps is with our students of color specifically in the area math and so you've set this data we've looked at this data for multiple years and ask a question like what are we going to do about this and so this was that opportunity to get a diverse group of on staff from multiple levels to answer those questions and so the questions he asked where around kind of those first two how is our math curriculum structure perpetuating these inequities because this is a new data we could have presented this data 10 years ago and see I've been similar and how many students are impacted by being placed in lower math options for each grade level and so I think sometimes we think of this as we have advanced math tracks for students which are great opportunities for those students that are in those past but we also have to be honest that when we create those were also creating these lower math options for students and so we talked about that for a while and in the next slide we kind of summarize some of the members feedback around that so yeah with Mike and I talked about with the participants way but we just took some highlights from what they said because they're the ones working in front of students every single day until these are some of the things that they've heard or the things that they have witnessed or experienced and so forth grade students being identified and sometimes they identify themselves as capable or not capable which is hard to think about it that age that a kid at that age believe that they're capable are not capable and then with that checking how does that carry through for the rest of their time here in our district and we talked a lot of work that you all have done at the board is like stereotype lips and stereotype threat so if you have a kid who's in fourth grade you already thinks that they're not capable what is there a mindset and belief system stop themselves throughout the rest of their time here and kids start to label themselves as they're in the smart math class or the dumb math class and that's really hard to hear to and thinking about how kids feel that way when students go to different spaces or place this is what they have access to that you know students would feel that way and then math classes create groups of kids and they're constantly tracks together and then we make a decision and then how can they ever access AP classes which was talked about earlier or laroma classes for college credit classes or places where they can get those things because they're in that track the entire time and then Advanced and accelerated classes can create a stereotype lift for the kids that go to that but then what is that doing to the kids that aren't those are some of the notes that are participants talked about and then also we worked a lot about my son a lot of work in our staffs in a lot of work around standards and what that means and so the National Council of teachers mathematics which is really huge something that they worked a lot on his their Equity statement and how they believe Equity so I just highlighted a couple things which is something we hear is the district obviously and absolutely believe in is creating supporting and sustaining a culture of access and equity in the last line I think it's important as increasing the numbers of students from all racial ethnic linguistic gender and socio-economic groups who attained the highest levels of mathematics achievement and that's something you all the Border committed to that something doctor Burgers is committed to and that's something that our whole organization is committed so after that piece of it we started looking at plans so we know that we really start tracking a large no students in 6th 7th and 8th grade so we kind of went through what how long do I activity what we want to do is provide algebra for all students and that pathway needs to start in sixth grade because that is where we start that advanced math pathway the way we are going to do it is really good by Jake in our existing structures and when we talk about leveling up it's providing that opportunity for all students so we already have a pass play where we've looked at covering three years I got this right yeah six seven eight three years of Standards over two years and six and seventh grade at students for taking algebra and 8th. There's also other districts that we can look to in our area that have this model and then Across the Nation so places like Cambridge in San Francisco already have these models and then just drowning herself back in the Y in this gets back to the proportional representation and Equitable access for all so I provide you need a portable access opportunities for all week rate opportunities for students to take those AP classes and ultimately be set up for Success Beyond High School so the plans around this just when is this going to happen some of these leveling up decisions are quicker than others like when we talked about two different tracks of Science in high school that we had a number of years ago that was a really easy change to make to level that up this one is going to be going to be more deliberate and that we have a set of students that are already in the tracks and 6th 7th and 8th grade so we want to continue to support those students on the pathway that we've laid out for them and then be intentional about our Pathways so that when we start this with the class we're not skipping any standard I'm creating any gaps with this plan and so this this graphic usually is the easiest way of explaining this on and so it shows our current model which has 6th graders starting in math 6th and I would just kind of fast forward to the endpoint or 9th through 12th graders can advance all the way up to Kelsey see what you'll notice across this plan is that Kel-Tec doesn't change that still the end goal for all our students it's who are we giving access to these pathways so access the Kel-Tec is determined in sixth grade currently if you look at the yellow highlight this is where we create that pathway for the the cohort of 6th graders that would be taking essentially what we would call it bass one now we want to continue calling that advanced one that would turn into 6th grade math but or being able to explain this that's that advanced pathway for all sixth graders and you can see that that first step in the process and then ask that cool work moves up you have algebra for all in your 3:00 and on the change in high school is is just the course is offered to kid starts with geometry their fur munir and then there's multiple Pathways I think sometimes we think of math traditionally is always leading to calculus that doesn't necessarily have to be the pathway Norris at the one that I would suggest the students who weren't going to end some of those stem fields or even if you're going into those stem fields to be able to look at like a statistics class or even double up on some of those other AP opportunities so it does go beyond Health PCS the endpoint that won't be endpoint for all students but I think it's important for us all to communicate that in this plan we are not leveling down we're not doing away with the AP classes that we offer we're just offer an access point tall so that's our last slide we don't have a big finish with fireworks but want to pass it over to you for anything we can help with in this is the beginning of a journey so there's still a lot of work to do around that Mark Lowry can you remind us what is the just graduating requirements. I do three years of math okay and of any like bacon any member of that my other question was that I have a vague memory of hearing about some research that. Taking baby cow is like there was some sort of pushback from FireRed and that area that like maybe we were rushing too much at the K-12 level so I wondered if you have any pies or hesitation just and I don't like it does that exist in my memory not right do you have any hesitation with us and if so like how you know how are we going to keep an eye on implications for postgraduate no you're right it's so there are some districts that are choosing to do away with algebra in eighth grade and instead of offering a math 8th graders with a pathway that algebra for everybody their freshman year so that's another way to do it but we didn't think I got a line into this ICS framework it's around leveling up we know that there are a number of students that that pathway Works were at what we're pushing back against is our mindset that that's not for all and yes that is true that there are there would be some college professors that would say kids don't have to take calculus in high school and I thought I would agree with that so it on it's also possible so we just had our councillors come up and talk about students who are going Beyond healthy see that's not a large portion of students but again this pathway isn't one where we would be promoting that all students take at do you see the way that we could also be looking at like that statistics pathway and where I would just push back having gone through so I originally was on a I do and to engineering at UW-Madison and I will tell you learn calculus in a class of 25 is much easier than laying calculus in a class of 300 but I think sometimes for college professor is when you don't teach at a high school you just assume that you better hey can you explain the choices for nine through 12th grades would be Algebra I mean you just said pathway is algebra and then you take geometry and then you take Algebra 2 and then you take precalculus and then you take a b a b c comes after that so then you're one two three I don't see what this without listing them all because there's more courses in this what this what this is showing us that nothing changes at the high school in years 12 three the change happens in your for when you have all 8th graders of taking algebra there's no longer need to offer freshman-level algebra course so join our community is nice so yes there is there earlier is that there would be some options if I need to find and the size that we would have it if it makes sense for us as a district to offer that as a class we could offer algebra as a class for new students who are coming in who might not have had a deltran eighth grade if it was a smaller number of students we could look maybe some distance learning our online options for them but yes it would be foolish of us to say that like there is no pathway for students who are coming in that need algebra because there will be this isn't something that a large number of districts are they're doing a purple what Emily are symptoms of the research available because there is research available that algebra is best. Nice rate that we're pushing too much you know we can bring everybody up but we better better sure I'm not saying that that the question is what research do we have your name to school districts Cambridge Wisconsin Ambridge out in Massachusetts Cambridge Mass state that supports its education system leveled up and then back on I'm doing it for quite some time to only 8th grade but I think we have over a third it's somewhere between a third and a half of our kids already take algebra as a traitor's and are successful with that so I mean that's the most important data point that it's possible again this is where our mindset around the AC at ICS framework is important is that we can't assume that you know there are courses or content that are only accessible to certain percentage of students on those are those are assumptions that there are just any differences between our kids will we're leaning into is that with a high-quality curriculum and support for students that all students can achieve a high I think if you go back to Saint Pete and Paul's presentation to that she did in front of the board she started doing some of the stuff in her sixth grade classroom and so similar what director joint said about the mindset but then also there's been some honest conversations around accessibility there's many many of our students weren't even given the option so we didn't know so right Mike is saying is this the data point here like the ICS provides a framework but we're going to use the ICS framework and our data here to do what's best for our kids and our families and we can look at other districts but there's other I don't have the same students that we have here in the same belief system we have here as well so did you did you just say you said like currently in eighth grade a third of the students take algebra it'll be it'll vary from year to year it's more than a third okay our goal after this would be a hundred percent but I think that is very helpful than the level concept of leveling up against will have questions about you know advance morning I know it's currently at least for my children he was in third grade when they were tested to determine if they would Advance what does that look like after this so we would still so this is the difference between in the acceleration and advancement and so is that can get lost I was going so what you're talking about is where the teacher is see that that in 4th grade kids start to notice that there were kids who took a test they're no longer in my math class they must be capable Mass students and I'm not capable so that's that's the data point you see that's an ability test on so the cogat test that we take do identify Advanced Learners that would be eligible for grade level acceleration so those students are skipping a whole Year's worth of content and those are like $14 a class currently that are on that pathway to Kellogg BC would that continue yeah so we don't want part of this is not to take away or accelerated program that would be separate from this was an accelerated yeah that's accelerate there's advanced math 7th grade and then algebra questions I'll say accelerated program continues as now we're leveling up to get 100% of the students to complete algebra 8th grade I think that his parents there is grade level acceleration that happens for a smaller amount of those things are there nice to still examine so I'm not saying that those are necessarily best practices but the leveling up conversation is not to do away with any accelerated opportunities there really are students that when we look at there needs that that's fast for that like for the Fort exam what like in the eighth grade is it tests are they to advance like are they going to be rusty on the skills for taking that if they're in algebra or is it actually support yeah I think that's a common question so this is where I like an integrated approach is important in middle school so integrated approach being the set every year we think about how things like geometry and statistics can still be taught from year to year so what we'll be looking at our all those standards that happened from 6 to 8 grade and coming up with a system really this is siding kids up for not necessarily geometry freshman year but really that algebra to their sophomore year that they have the skills needed to be successful in algebra so will still work in geometry concepts will still work in statistics Concepts and I'm going to get into the nitty-gritty here and I'm trying to not let myself go there where that cut off is just I used to teach a grade math so when you get to talking about factoring and quadrilaterals in algebra you're going farther than you really need to on 2 seconds up success in Algebra 2 what ends up happening in Algebra 2 as he just go back and reviewing all those Concepts because the even the most advanced kids when you teach them those Concepts on after a Year's worth of geometry like it goes away so it's I guess to pull back a little bit ideas to go deeper into some of these topics so it's it's the big things in Middle School are fractions decimal algebraic thinking dropping geometry and statistics and so if you can take an integrated approach where kids are exposed to that then that sets them up for Success on the forward exam I fight on the board exam does in 8th grade test for alignment to the 8th grade standards so it would be something worth keeping an eye on also knowing that we as a district of talked about that we value what the what exam tells us but we don't get here are instructional program towards the forward exam we tear them towards kids, pushing the standard so if we're looking 6:12 we want to make sure that the kids are getting the math standards that are laid out through the end of 12th grade that's a long-winded answer for the lower the Student Center under right how might this impact that yeah so I think that sets us up for success in that way in that what I what we have talked about is going when you look at these I think of these two things so we look at how kids label themselves from those tracks and then we look at the data that we've seen and we see that those gaps early on are not as great as they are later on and saw I think just having kids wait when we talk about the stereotype threat in The Stereotype lift that for all kids to be learning together and seeing themselves as equals and math will go a long way towards his achieving a high level in Pre act yeah I don't do the pre act being given in 9th and 10th graders kids are take geometry and algebra two sets them up for Success there so I I don't think that will be bad in Geometry 9th graders geometry then I'll try to then he's been a conundrum is that geometry never well anywhere so yeah the argument is that you need Algebra 2 for precalculus more so then you need geometry for precalculus what country great for logical reasoning and diet I actually goes really well with computer program you say I have twins I'm not having graduations and in third grade they take the test and one of them is identified or solar radiation the other one is not in eighth grade do they both take out your brother or one of them is already moved on to Geometry what we're talking about is a student who is testing the in like the 90th percentile or above in third grade and so the acceleration point then happens in fourth grade we're rather than going into fourth grade math they going to 5th grade math so that and then you can kind of projectile. why it's called accelerate a zebras a seventh-grader option of kids to be accelerating like 12 to 15 kids for class I was just trying to visualize that okay for a grade you mean like a bird or a full of kids music okay that's my other question was about control Staffing application interventionists or other sport in the here's where we're trying to accomplish a lot for those middle schoolers and in that transition time like not that you need to know what it does is are so many different Pathways in middle school so when we're talking about scheduling currently for Middle School we have to figure out the sixth grade math sections the advance one sections the seventh grade math sections that van two sections 8th grade math sections LG sections in the geometry section so there's not a whole lot of collaboration going on there when instead you have the 6th grade math to 7th grade math and 8th grade math classes now all the sudden it makes it easier Ammon Staffing Sandpoint to have collaborative Partners so there is there is no change I mean kids will still be taking the same number of math classes so we still need the same number of Math teachers it's just we're not going to be calling teachers and kids and all those different directions you have their kind of Singleton sections when you had the point you don't have to go through the slides again when it when you that tracks kids together sometimes when there's a single thing class if if we're in Geometry together because geometry only happens once per day and then we're in band and then only happens once per day so you might have a small core cohort of students who literally are together almost every hour of the day and that has its pros and it's cons but we want to avoid and also I need to listen to eight things right so now if I'm a teacher in Middle School I'm prepping and planning for this and this and this and now I can focus better on prepping and planning for this it helps with teacher being able to keep our staff to and keep them happy and having them have a better focus on what they need to teach with son and create better outcomes for our that's because now I'm focusing on teaching this I can develop better relationships for our students and I might be able to see things that I might have missed before cuz now I'm planning and prepping for her four different sections of three different types of math and someone we talked about our ability to retain and support our teachers that's another reason to for leveling up for our staff getting back to the accelerated non accelerated that we're trying to come up with any reason for why you leveling using the word advance in your leg instead of just I'm just asking because suddenly it goes from the dance want advance to the write this is of just graphic was to show that the math 6 is not the math 6 that it used to be over that hump this in your Ford would be Mass 6 - 7 and what math a is is algebra just kind of show like the transition from there were at where we're going but I'm not sure if it helps if it's really Mass smash 64 everybody in map I think the the other point in using the advance term was just to re-emphasize that we are leveling off so it's it's bringing those standards in and pushing everybody higher okay what I hear you saying kind of what I'm taking away from this has opening up access expectation for everybody which is great this is much appreciated other last sigh percussion any other questions so we're going to be ready next year we will be ready next year for our first cohort entering sixth grade what we're going to be doing between now and next year is again reaching out to those other districts that have done this to learn from them and then looking at resources because we can't use what we're currently using two to meet the student needs so you'll be working with the same team to look the resources what is the standard some come up with the pathway another so I'm so are we when does that hit for Math and is this like part of that we kind of got things a little bit with math because we adopted a new math program in elementary school but what kind of works are advantages now that we've got a solid math program and some math was up for a 7-year adoption next year anyways so we already have our program ik5 so we're going to look at 6 adding another high school so what that really does for our students to is when we think about that the students will be in 6th grade 2 years from now there currently in 4th grade so they'll have two years with this new curriculum which also increases the rigor and we'll set these kids up for success and then I remember there was a lot stressed around when they either state or national social studies standards changed in the last couple years is that it would with social studies were doing it one year the time so I'm going to have to update all this with the the curriculum update that we do in the fall but we we started that process where next year there'll be a new we call it a scope and sequence so I in elementary school as you know adopting a new yellow program we just adopted a new math program we're not dropping us social studies program on top of it but we're looking at the order in which we teach social studies and so we're going to start that new pathway next year in third grade and we'll do like one great at a time so that is that cool or goes through again we're not skipping like these large areas of the cervical content so when you're at a time I'll work with each of the grade levels to integrate that and we talked about 2 once we get the language arts program the programs were looking at in a great social studies and science so we want to look for those opportunities where if there's a topic that's being covered within the language arts program that we can also do some tinkering around with that scope and sequence just take advantage of aligning all of this so yeah there's like 9. I don't know how you have any hair left that you haven't run it out support of the staff yes it does not work I do alone apologize I just thought of a question next year's planting year following year implementation right and so Sherry had talked about a little bit of this work is already happening so it when we talk about Sam call looking at her students and saying you know what I've got this Advanced 1 curriculum I think all students can do it we've had more students that are eligible for the at that advanced math track just because of teachers like Sam saying I can do this with all students and then just jumping in that's pretty unique for a teacher to be able to just jump in on prompted and do that so we want to support them with a curriculum and a plan does this is more like got a solid plan in scope and sequence and curriculum to support him as having a two-year group where they're all going to be in the same courses in late like our current did graders and then our current for craters when they gets a ninth-grade they're all going to be taking geometry the same time yeah there is it's a mix of 9th and 10th Center seventh grade and the middle school there are separate courses but by it when you get to the high school it's mixed grade levels but yes that will happen this is super important does not spank your current model will be in place let me know what time of the year exterior so math classes if you got a middle schooler might look a little different as we try out different programs and and see what works for a suit like the communication plan for families is going to be in yeah I think the extent we can simplify it and not have to have this visual my parents are going to have a lot of questions something out like that like broke if what I want is just like my kids like I just want to know what you're going to take what and what it means so yes once we decide upon a pathway being clear about what that pathway is and why starting the other purposes of this is more of a guy at a systems level what is this look like but are each individual students you just want to know where's my kid going is very exciting actually and this goes for every class but I see you know it's the encouragement to make sure that the teachers have the support they need and know how to provide whatever scaffolding if they have students who are at an extended. Unless whoever just to make sure that all of his students are supported I thank you so much are angels next I will take a motion for the superintendent's consent agenda I moved to adopt the superintendent's consent agenda Ocean passes us wishes to transitioning to discuss budget-balancing strategies and we have other Evelyn your hello we're transitioning from man budget hi everybody so we are going to talk about budget-balancing strategies in our process towards the preliminary budget in May and June on our agenda today so we want to come and go through a few different things so I'm just kind of talking over all about what the purpose what are the goals and what are our priorities with Reese map to budget-balancing other words why we doing this and what are we trying to accomplish in two different bucket so that we're going to talk about you know how where was he needs for next year and how we're approaching that budget balancing in mind and then we're going to talk about some of the sticky things so here's some things that we kind of figured out we strategize around making sure our priorities are being met hear some things that are like either emerging or I'm going to challenges where we have some strategies in find b t. Still kind of there's some sticky challenges that don't have a clean and neat strategy and then finally talking about you don't have a future planning and kind of a wedding out a couple of different approaches that we want to take and getting I'll be back in thoughts on how we're thinking about A protein that had a long-term ER not even so long for year fiscal cliff the purpose of budget-balancing I always come back to our community promise and when we went through the operating referendum work and you know we were clear that in a community was clear with us that this isn't a blank check we still want you to continue to work and be strategic and be thoughtful and how your allocating their resources and where headed to continuing to do that Financial reality as we talked about many times our expenses continue to grow faster than our revenues so we are not in a place where when we see a need we can just add more expense right that just makes our problem worse or trying to make got smaller. Bigger and then changing student needs is student population doesn't stay the same year every year they're evolving and changing and we need to do the same and that means kind of looking at how are allocating resources and making sure that putting them where we're seeing the greatest needs or in some cases just the greatest interest so that's kind of the overarching purpose our goals high impact spending we really wanted to look at it and say okay we're spending a significant amount of money are we spending on the things that are actually making an impact in the right thing I say to try our priority is to make sure that were checking ourselves in his doctor bird I said earlier we really have a lot of time talking about this as a team and working on this and holding our own selves accountable to our priorities and then the third is you do not every change can happen overnight they're trying to get some things have to be phased overtime it's all done. You're the last kind of contextual bucket is budget priorities so we went through a process with all of you and we went through a process in the community and it was theirs pretty strong and Cicero I didn't outside stakeholders that there isn't a three priorities for us in the budget process one is academic rigor one is support for the whole child and the third is compensation who sings it was pretty consistent and all the conversations that we have compensation we've talked about already in terms of the year with the increased already talked about for next year we talked about that last week last time in our budget assumptions conversation that we're assuming a 4.6% increase we expect that to be on the high end for what other school districts are looking at so we feel good that we have a plan for that that priority I will talk about some of the challenges that in the long-term later on but I want a next move to talking about our investment needs around academic River and support for the whole child in particular in a couple of other things that surface throughout the process so we have a kind of a handful of things we had and Doctor Burgos and he did a really good job of pushing us as a team to say what is it we need to be doing to accomplish academic to ensure that we're supporting the whole child or what are the things that we are missing one of the things that we need to pursue and molding Us in that conversation first before we got into the nothing but nothing like okay the needs of the priority that we have now. is there funding strategies or something maybe that's less important that we can look at so I'm going to highlight a handful of things that we surfaced that we're kind of could have been bigger ads but we're kind of trying to find ways to prevent them from being an ad to the budget while still staying true to those priorities so the first one treatment for all students and one of our high priorities for next year that director joint has been working on and I know talk with you about that previous is the new English language arts curriculum for kindergarten through eighth grade and looking at they've been working at he has a committee of various teachers and other stakeholders looking at what is about curriculum for us that meets the requirements of act 20 but also in first and foremost really make sure that we have high-level achievement in English and language arts for our students and we also identified a need for more time spent an intervention particularly at sis and felt that you were looking at the needs for Cricket on development student growth time spent in small groups times when one on one that we needed to have dedicated 1.0 FTE where they sat position had previously been shared across the district and so we estimated the cost of that at about a hundred and sixty-five thousand in order to find all of those opposition and the curriculum so then we kind of got to work instead of his is pretty important but we don't have $165,000 lying around so one of the things that we didn't you said so what are the challenges that we have is with our curriculum needs these are increasingly ongoing expenses so much as a software application other things that have like a year-over-year cost we're not buying you know set a new textbooks anymore we know we're going to have this cost going forward at least some component of it so one of the things that we have currently we spend a significant amount of money on interest for short-term borrowing we're projecting it. go away after next year so if we make we don't feel like it's make sense to put that off if you like we could absorb the $65,000 next year knowing that after that that cost we could just take that take the funds that we had allocate for paying interest fees and move that towards right into the teaching and learning budget really moving to non-instructional budget item to instructional which is what we always desire yeah has really going to be able to do because of our fund balance yes so the second thing we spent a lot of time is a doctor Burgos describes his work under the hood looking at just how our allocating some resources and so we looked at we had have a shared position it for 7 through 12th grade that was a point five f t e news that okay and we also have some strong auntie who's in The English Department the high school level and also have certification in teaching reading we didn't need as many ftes for English next year so is it okay we can take some of that support reading at the high school support take more of that cake t e in applied towards at 1.00 at sis and then lastly we had your as we looked we spent quite a bit of time to talk about this before we really go through and look Department by department at water like the actual course enrollment for next year and what does that mean in terms of the number of teaching staff that we need we were able to reduce some of our overload so that sometimes we have teachers teaching an extra class we were able to reduce some of those and then we had a point for a few to set its position is only a point for Murray had extremely low enrollment and those courses and after looking at some other strategies for how we could manage that interest we decided that that was one of you could apply to those costs as well so Wizardry think we can get at least $100,000 for next year of 165 and then the year after that when we no longer have to short-term borrow then we would be able to cover the full amount did you mean honest I'm sorry but I'm looking at the chart and one thing you say estimated funding FYE 25 is 100 K and then estimated finding a boy 2665 get so total of 265 what is cost of a pizzeria so each all right question does that make sense now this one kind of showing you what's the cost what's the estimated Mass but yeah and that's an annual cost in most cases unfortunately and are either we can cover 100K of it next year and 165 year after that so then it takes the projected Budget Inn 20in fy20 6 okay so part of that is awesome and this is this one is more of a professional development class on an ongoing basis but this is one where this is more of a one-time investment in order to implement our new curriculum with food Lodi and beat with the requirements of Acts 20 we need to make a pretty heavy investment in professional development for next year and also want to continue so director joint works with a committee of individuals on the implementation are doing this election. I'll be able to continue some of that work next year and looking at How We Roll lying across grade levels so that is an estimated cost of $60,000 we anticipate asking seed for that as are your kind of highest priority for they typically give us somewhere between 100 100 $50,000 per year and would like to prioritize using that for professional development of our staff I know that's another piece of feedback that we got really several times a pretty consistently from our stakeholders were talking about. it is please use granted the best as much as you can so this is an opportunity for us to say hey here's an expense that we will have it that level year-over-year can you help find it so our expectations. so when you do make a curriculum purchase part of what you purchase is some professional development support but it's very basic so what this is asking for is something above and beyond like what we had this year for the math implementation of the elementary level there was ongoing Michigan site visits additional planning time with staff so this isn't just the bare-bones coverage this is really trying to get additional teacher support the seed sound like they're interested this change they have funded professional development in the passes at that level if usually been interested in professional development as a category so we talked about support for the whole child being a high priority for us and there's a couple of different needs what we thought about that when we kind of Engagement particular with our director of student services Kate harder one is you do we have some more intense needs for across categorical teachers particularly at at water and sis it's just nature of the needed to change your every year and we have to adapt to that so we feel that we need additional support it as I asked as well as at at Water the fun that we had for the Health Partnership and at the end of this year but that's I think that's probably one of the things that was tired at least internally our staff out like was why the highest priorities when we have students who have complex mental health needs we need to ensure that we're going to get them support right away not in 6 to 12 months when there's a therapist available so that was identified as a high priority for us are funding the cost for two teachers and the contract over approximately $295,000 for the staffing piece of it we your kind of took a look and said okay we have more needs over here but we're going to have less over there so by giving direct your heart or some freedom to be able to say you can head over remove staff a little bit and your staff can follow where the needs are so if we have more at one school lesson another then we're just we're going to appropriate staff remove staff around so we are all to mately able to accommodate that just by realigning our Staffing across the district and kind of thinking District rise rather than school-by-school and then we are fortunate to have to State Mental Health Grand so we think we can allocate for next year in order to help offset that cost and that will get us through next year one of those would cover about half of it the year after that and we're thinking about some other strategies for the year after but at this point we have a plan for next year and we feel good about that it has new Mental Health Grants are ones that we've already been relied on for that there's a new state Grant that's part of it which is nice and then we have some funds remaining from the Kid Galahad Grant as well that will Alex could you talk a little bit more about register using staff Staffing across the District of these going to be Staffing that are coming out of our skara peaches with cross categorical licensure we have you know 8 Crosscut teachers at this school 5 at this one we're going to do seven and six next year because that's what the needs are telling us we need to do the same total number just moving them differently correct total number of teachers being able to move from different schools and different school for all grades must Cross County K12 certified actually I think all that's what I was trying to specs that that might be challenging for some schools if they receive that that's losing but understanding the big picture like it's just so it might just be a rough patches but I would anticipate yeah this is a it's also a natural process in special education because against the IEP is designed around student needs a new staff accordingly so while there might be some change at the same time I think that's an area where people resources below their needs from Wrightwood Elementary School so what happened and then in this cut a bucket of investment needs the other areas just you don't get like things just we're not sad if we're not the same here and you're out and we have to kind of fluctuate our staffing and you're trying to maintain it class sizes within our target range sing so we have like it just looking at as we did and we knew this when we did the enrollment projections in January that we had a little bubble in second grade at at Water I want to just know that we would have that bubble even if we were only resident students not because of open enrollment so we would have large class sizes with only resident students if we only had two teachers in the second grade and even larger course with our open enrollment student so we felt that it was especially that critical grade level it also great level of we're honestly sometimes we get more students that is like first and second grades are any more common grade levels for us to see resident additions in the district so we wanted to add third section at water and most of our most of our grades at both schools are three sections for grade that one was only two so we're taking that up to the three classes per grade we also saw a need for a directors joints and Tucker were talking about math browsing discussion with all of you and they talked briefly about the elementary school in Dobson pietenpol and trying and getting more kids in there so we so what happens with that is when we have a lot of kids we have a relatively large actually 5th grade class next year we have so that means more kids going up into 6th grade so just a little bit of a bubble there and we didn't want to have too many kids in that it's all math program with one teacher so we added and it just an additional section and then are service in this sentence of phrase we use the Word and Excel we use advanced math and accelerated and I'm still reeling from trying to understand I really a discussion so additional section of mass this is my flight not bikes this is referring to the accelerated but because Wednesday was referring to so to have that LOL class size of students in accelerated math didn't make sense so we really felt we needed to add just one section so it's really like point to f t e and then lastly we wanted a little bit more and Richard we needed a couple back in additional sections of enrichment both at Water and Lake Bluff in order to make sure that we're meeting the mental health needs of our students in the physical activity needs of our students are so those are it surfaced as needs our funding strategy for that is uniso we talked about the larger class sizes at second grade we had really only need for two sections of play for at Lake Bluff they projecting about 40 students and fewer at at water and in case for most of our cohort comes it that most of it but it's time to pay $5 kforce actions tend to be a little small so we felt it would be the best use of resources to move so that FTE to second grade at water help offset that cost and not run three sections at like blah and none of those classes enrolled yet so by making that decision now we're making it a smoother process or parents as well. Having to make changes over the summer so we reduced Point 5K for section at Lake Bluff we we we just rebalance some of our math ft easy just do we have just one less affectionate as I asked them we were able to move that section to Lake place it was kind of a net net and then lastly but we got pretty Cree this year I think we were looking at we had a couple of teachers at shs didn't have full caseload this and Specialty courses that they teach that had extremely low enrollment didn't justify running as many sections as they would normally teach of those sudden they happen to have licensure also or whatever has licensure at the elementary level so leveraging them to help us provide some more enrichment programs at the elementary level so that doesn't reduce sound like hidden packages primarily driven by the addition of classroom teacher at Atwater but we felt that that was one area where it was important kind of manage and get that third section in there are we anticipating it will fall within our class size guidelines for all classes then the like are we saying like another turn down the level of specials they have another special every week is that what that mean that they would have more we were just have more alike they would just have it more frequently throughout the week okay it's not like a different that I didn't explaining an Elementary schedule is we have a need for some additional 5 minutes at the elementary school for the DPI require so that doesn't have to be delivered by a Fayed certified teacher it needs to be planned in conjunction with a fight at certified teacher so love the teachers that were talking about do hold Elementary licensure able to get creative and terms of what that means so it's going to help meet that requirement and it's also going to give even out some of the planning time so I've asked principles Carter in a way across like to really take a look at the younger grade levels first because the older four five and six have Spanish for five and six in Spanish so that this will also help people out some of the planning time discrepancy that teachers have experienced by reducing your rk4 sections. require us to add an aid to any of them like I said also like an addict we already have 4 classes the class and I don't remember what the school but if there's a great level that is larger will a great level will be larger all the way through presumably so we will move up to the next great yeah it at what are most of autism that water in the second grade most of our most of our grade levels have three teachers 2nd grade doesn't and so we'll look at it again next year and if we don't need that but I think we'll probably still need is just she was just kind of hard cuz you're just always on that top level if we don't need that after you eat and we'll lose it after you'd like by attrition presumably okay thanks so those were for I like that with a lot of interpretation in depth and I know like the baby a little bit tedious but we really liked wanted to just give you a Flavour of the work that we're doing and trying to really be intentional about funding priorities even with sometimes things like okay where you're reducing things but we wanted to kind of present things not it's like okay here's how we balance our budget we took these 10 things away it's like okay because of things that we needed and these were last priority cuz we didn't need them as much and that's kind of how we got to those decisions and try to help you under our decision process and how we're going through that and thinking through how do we make sure that we're really living our mission and those are kind of the big things and then there's a hundred other unit has a smaller things but just act Boba highlight instructional technology was one thing we're going to be got feedback that that wasn't the highest priority for additional investment so we've been trying to work with Jack while there and look at like how can we watch a little bit so our lights are two things are testing that budget when is replacement cycles and the other is just software and some software that we thought was important for Safety and Security on the back end and things like that so we're just kind of look how can you move things in it within the budget or with respect to replacement Cycles how can we stretch out the lifespan or if we need something at the lower grades can we recycle some of our coronavirus from graduating students in Houston at lower levels and things like that to just try and stretch it out or try to be really intentionally how reason I grant funds those are hard cuz it's most of our grants have like really specific purposes but really taking a shower plans to those and then lastly but we did I know we can find strategies for everything that we wanted to find we had more ideas so I said okay this is what we're doing a lot I think we felt pretty good about what we were able to get to you without a significant enlargement of the budget then we talked about okay there there were particular couple of other Staffing request we said let's look at some other ways that we can reallocate or you look at that maybe in the future let's see how things go the next couple of years knowing that we can't necessarily do everything at once and if it also and Heather just to reiterate a point you made earlier and I'm thinking of Jack over here right and so I also want to say just because we say oh instructional technology doesn't seem like an area that we want to give a lot of priority to there are Safety and Security needs that we have and a lot of those products are also increasing and cost so even if we don't want to Target that are we see that oh where we're okay with using fewer devices there are instructional technology and this is so much more so I just want to thank Jack for his patience as we work through that because that's a challenge that he's working really hard with his team to meet those needs and also we were taking a look at what other what other ways could some other funding sources help offset some other technology cost I like to our capital budget what are the odds and then what would be the strategies to cope if like we had a much higher enrollment in K4 in like people show up in July and August how quickly can we add a section how and How likely is it really is hard to the cape for his easier once the kids are here k4k life is hard it's hard to project but we have had these conversations and we just talked to IRS to she's like got her finger on the pulse of what's happening and her family was by now he usually knows coming for Cape or theirs but usually if we add some over the summer we also usually lose some so you know based on history but we also have right now lower enrollment at at water so it's all like there's you know there is the opportunity to send kids to Atwater purses like flat if we need to get to that point and something we experienced last summer this was I was still in a daze Heist unpack my boxes yet but when we were looking at 4K enrollment we were really low and we actually had three sections at Atwater and end up having to close the section it was either late in July or even early in odd just when you think about families who need to provide wraparound care and make those types of plans eventually things work out but that's highly disruptive for families so we just felt like it was a better mood to make that decision right now we're with an art class guidelines that we've been using in the past and will watch those numbers but Iris also has a really good pulse on and of the trends that we see but again anything can happen and I would love to see our enrollment increase something else we have to consider that this is probably the topic of another conversation is just that time lines weird we're Bound by certain time lines were Staffing or non-renewals or certain decisions so some of these timelines don't always mesh very clean but we once we offer contracts to teachers in may we can't take them back so if you're thinking about changes in Staffing the time to do that is now we can always sad later so we do have the option to add it would have a budget impact and we would we would find a way to make that work but that so we just know that we do have that option if we were to see a spike in enrollment over the summer if we did answer my question like we need to send some hot water who normally would be zone for like life or what does families have the opportunity to like go back for 5K and then again that has happened that has happened in the past it's pretty common all right y'all ready for emerging in ongoing challenges and I might buy a note for this light as I get my alternate title which is self portrait with a budget so probably like it okay so yeah I mean here is like he was very start to feel the Real Pain Healthcare is just I was telling us it's really we're really in a difficult spot so we saw late last week that uh uh see is giving us 25% increase in our premiums which is a little over $800,000 in additional premium for next year so that's challenge has already increased so that was a bit of a blow I mean we knew our Trend date data has been great so another words is getting better but we didn't have enough months with UHC to really like convince them of that we're still working on it but we have like we do pay out that way she has paid out a lot and claim so it's not I think you know plenty of Armenians not worried about them we are using health care right so we're we're using Healthcare pretty significantly and supporting our staff that way so our future to Jack free with that it's challenging his were continuing to see this and the way that statute is written near the district is on the hook for the majority of the prefer 87 and a half percent of the premium so it's really like I think a well-intentioned law that puts us in a place of if we can't afford a 87 and a half percent of a much more expensive premium and we have to change the plan and then we have to increase as it through and deductible which isn't always desire so where this is a work in progress and working with our consultant and I asked to try and figure out what our options are for next year we can absorb and $800,000 increase so what are the things that were hoping to do is have a workshop over the summer to bring in our consultants in really talk about let's just throw everything on the table what are some like out-of-the-box ideas in terms of how we can address Healthcare what do need to do to get ready like what how do we get to a different place in a year I don't think there's a miraculous solution out there and this is not just us either right so and I think everyone probably experience is this and some level districts are seeing similar levels of increases so this isn't something that there's necessarily like a Magic Bullet to but at least how can we like keep it from contain it a little bit more that it has been so we're working on her we're just in the midst of working on trying to figure out what a reasonable plan for next year is and trying to strike a balance and we know we'll have to pay more then we're paying now but trying to figure out you know what's what we can get do that's reasonable and what agreement we can get to the HD basketball net remind me when we got like a single bed last year leverage your see yeah and I know we talked about so if we go out again and probably get another similar Republic would maybe a basket Network Health back cuz every what kind of the only one building according to our benefits consultant right now but they may not I mean they since we left them last year cuz they jacked our rates up quite a bit last year we couldn't afford to stay with them in an Ideal World we are also trying to like those costs which is an obvious. But there's also like like the hardship for staff and you have to change of plans and then we learned something and feel like we're just starting to get your sea legs to understand me like how this particular plan work so in an Ideal World will be able to wrestle down that cost at least to a point that's manageable I'm sure we'll have to make some sacrifices this is such a substantial cost I think it will be very helpful Consultants tell us what we can do and see at other districts are doing that's just what's the percent of our budget is just for healthcare roughly 80 10% increases his incredible it's like really really important question that one we're talking about the challenges and what percent is is going nothing we don't want to do this and we want but people need to know what percent is going to healthcare and I think something like that it's helpful information for us do you know you know community members what is the timing for like we were shop in the summer got some potential to help us for the next benefit year next year I mean right now we have to like so what our work is our is our staff don't have any health insurance come July one so that's you know right like nobody wants that so we have to start working backwards from that we have to we have to have everyone enrolled in a new plan by ride around the start of the start of June so they have time till I get their ID cards so that you know especially like it July 1st is terrible because it's always something happens over the holidays are going into July 4th people don't have the right cards that's just not a good situation so so so yeah so we're really the with the board Workshop we're really talking that's all the following year and we started to do some work with them and gauging on some different options but I think it means how much is kind of more intentional and bigger conversation so everything so I mean I think you to maintaining her compensation I mean this is for the same conversation on some level of his attitude benefits and compensation go together but you know I think with so next year we have a 4.6% increased given the fact that our revenues only and it's projected to increase about one and a half percent per year going forward it's you do not too hard to imagine where we're headed and x and compensation the effects of that are exponential so what we have talked about doing is either we want to make sure that we're maintaining compensation but let's talk about what does that mean so we talked about engaging with a third party to help you with compensation study and looking at our total package of salary and benefits and look at across employee where would we need to be in order to make sure that we are highly competitive in terms of attracting top talent and that would help us understand you know what we really need to then strategize courts and then looking realistically at you know what we're doing in terms of future salary increases is going to need to align more with more closely with our projected Revenue so we can't continually have a conversation increases that are significantly higher than our Revenue increases Robinson's interests and needs her talked a little bit about this at the beginning and you know wanting to make sure that were meeting and two students so one of the things that we've seen the last couple of years that we've been looking really closely at it I think it's 5:00 and happening over a longer period of time is so are performing arts program in particular has seen a decline in participation and we're going to stab compared to the levels as soon as on the way of a significant Staffing investment in Performing Arts we still want to offer Performing Arts so you know that's not something that's part of our like I seen something we want to do but we need to look at week keep finding it at the same level with significantly fewer students that's not fair to the students who are in other programs this is not so that's something that we're looking at Doctor Burgos and Mr Kenny have had him charged some of our teaching staff I'll be there course offerings says maybe we need to kind of freshen up and offer some things that are more new and fresh and interesting to a broader array of students running some of those courses on a rotation versus annually or every semester so they were talking about other contacts as well and then looking at our staffing model and how to other districts run these programs as they don't all have as many staff as we do and how did they do that and what can we think differently and do differently while also continuing to Rana performing arts program but maybe just doing it a little differently in a way that better lines are kind of where we're seeing student interest right now is drama a special license or is it like with English sure how does that work it's it's on license did it is common to have teachers that crossover English drama in some cases because you also could have public speaking or debate classes I'd ask cuz I thought I remembered you in a few typos I'm not sure if you for teaching class you have to be licensed in that area for helping to support the production of performances that's a whole different that's a whole different animal you don't need a license to do that you need skill in love of The Craft boats so you're kind of a long the same lines as maintaining course diversity as our enrollment changes you said one of the area's is that was tough for us this year was World languages and we're still kind of like working I had a wrestling that in and so we are like one of the decisions in this could have been an investment slide to is we felt it was important to continue running enough World language courses so that you could have four years of language because that is a competitive requirement for college if you don't have four years of language and you're going into a certain program or trying to go into a top-tier school that's going to impact that students so we had to run for classes 15 or fewer students which usually try not to do but in order to maintain that so that the challenge area for us as I asked to some of our specialty enrichment classes in particular PE we're running with really small pee is in one class Barbie big so and that's just kind of a function of how their schedule work so that's a challenge area are a saint take learning classes for to delete the high school are quite expensive to run so there Austin teacher ratios are out of the Class A lot and a lot of materials cost and things like that and then our alternative pathway of courses Edgenuity New Horizons have like a staff intensity to them some very small groups of kids as well so those are four things as we look at like kind of how do we maintain our diversity and make sure we're meeting the needs we need alternative Pathways right like we need kids not every kid is cut from the same bowl and we need to be able to address that so but how can we do that a little bit more efficiently let's go. I know you talking about the world languages but do you want to look again at what colleges are requiring for languages infected tonsils themselves are telling some of the kids or they're coming home with me I do they only need two years so Christian Scholars Program and that's 4 years to so take a look and see and we call that world languages as an example but I would say and I know there are other departments where we have very high specialized courses that are high interest where we see 14 kids when we don't want to take that opportunity away but at some point we are going to have to establish a threshold and so we made the decision or with Mr Kenny to take a look at running those courses every other year write the language ones may be exactly what we talked about that as a possible strategy did one of the other things that we're trying we have one teacher that teaches both French and Spanish and like it really helps do it you're one of those so we've also we're seeing really need just like to balance French and Spanish a little bit better and so that we can have you do instead of like two and a half Spanish teachers and a half French we can have two in one or something like that would just be easier if we had more kids in French I like to bring those class sizes up and maybe Spanish down a little so we're trying we're continuing we had good good success with some of the exposure at the elementary levels to friends this year did see an uptick in the number of kids taking French in 7th grade through excited about that when you continue that and then we're also we do have some openings in World languages that were looking to fill if we can with dual certified English French or I'm sorry Spanish French teaching staff I've been working on director join as a couple ideas how do we put a Wrangle that sis course rotation so we can balance class sizes or not putting a lot of investment in classes that could be much larger and then it will be taking a look at alternative Pathways and look at the Staffing I think that's why there's other ways to do that looked at patterns for what language is spoke students have been taking and Dylan romant or through the difference learning opportunities like I just am not suggesting anything changed immediately but I'm just wondering how we would like if we have a evaluated are we offering the right language is like we know what there be like Raider Tomb and if we were offering like Arabic and Mandarin or I don't know I'm just curious cuz I know last year and just recalling a conversation that I had with dr. Stern key because these conversations were well under way I started visiting she and I talked quite a bit about that in particular that must have been like a conversation that was happening that we can with some staff members so yes I would say off the top of my head I don't know what those horses are like but just to getting hearing from the counselors now it's good for us to hear where the interests are driving kids and what options we have because we're fortunate to be located here for now it seems like there was some overwhelming you know interesting one language I probably would have noticed like maybe were offering the right ones but I've just Grey's like how how do we determine that like at a certain point right like I don't know I think I read a biography about are Gibson's dad taught German right and we don't have those anymore when do we decide and how do we decide to stop and I think that's kind of this is going to be the ongoing conversation we're having until we get to the next few slides and listen to terminations but as we continue with declining enrollment it's really a balance between how do we offer kids like that ramp to continue but at some point you need to Sunset and make a decision so you don't enroll any new freshman for example and taking their course and then you've got like a three-year off ramps for certain things or you design a different pathway or if we know you know we have a smaller number of students weed then push them towards one of these alternative Pathways versus offering horse here right unless they were most everything sensation sensitive but Utilities in Boston Bandit two of the more significant and then also said like purchased Services is what we call like anything that it's like a we're not getting a thing we're just getting a service for it security crossing guards any other Personnel Services those are all like we're seeing more significant increases in those as well and trying to wrap our arms around that so last time we talked about Athletics and bussing and that was really disappointed to learn that we wouldn't be able to do the move forward with the car the passenger vans but we've had an opportunity to really engage with our athletic director and with principal Kenny and talk about okay how can we want to make sure that we Athletics are super important sorry but this isn't a part of the support for the whole child but how can we take a look at you know if we have some teams that have been small year-over-year maybe we still out there that you know we talked about offer them not offer then the thought was well let's continue but maybe with a smaller coaching Lowe's you don't need three coaches if you have less than 10 kids on the team Brighton so like just trying to skinny up and so we gave has some goals around looking at his coaching staff and and comparative student is the patient over the last two years and identifying some opportunities so we can shift more cost at some of the other program cost we talked about biking to mass murders and submit about the amount that they're covering of the football program you in that Minnie Mouse machines take advantage of that and a couple of other things we talked about the difference right around transportation we talked about some other budget area so if we think we're going to be able to wrap our arms around it or at least for next year and keep things going that is a really positive experience for students are the utilities is hard I mean we did a spring break from energy you know I mean it actually does help if you have your answer we asked everyone to unplug other peripherals turn out their lights. I would like to need to take a longer vacation from Christmas lights in the call the classrooms because those who use a lot of energy but we'll see how far we get to that one it's not going to dramatically change you know that utilities are expensive and it's a significant amount of our budget but doing what we can and highly encouraged okay I know you're hot but like talk to I mean its request in to see it you know to adjust the temperature in your room instead of opening the door right cuz it's just morning he down here literally heating Outdoors that point so how to do whatever we can just to keep it contained a question that you have to order board meeting so we can turn off the lights in here last but certainly not least, if you didn't see the video of the penguins like jumping into the water is really great I highly recommended play watch it like several times but either we have to talk about what we're doing in 4 years and we've talked about it but we've got to get down to brass tacks and she's a path you know what do we want to really not that we necessarily making his decision right now but what do we the dig in on right so it took none of these like kind of bigger broader strokes happen overnight so it's kind of really 22 options we still operate go back right and so we're either like looking at we need to enroll more students to make the district significantly larger you know some of these course diversity conversation some of these classes conversations go away when we get to a different threshold of student population back in maybe you can even offer greater diversity of courses right and you have just a bigger economy of scale just if you have a school with an Administration with 400 kids or six kids it makes a huge difference so we do have building capacity so one option is to scale up the other is to scale back and just say okay how and I know he tossed around the clothes ability nor in a kind of like planned for a smaller population of students so I think you're the first thing that needs to happen is the visioning and strategic planning the doctor Burgos is planning to do with stakeholders over the summer and to really kind of talk about what you know I think a lot of this and what we want to be in we want to do and what it led to things that are important to us and guiding us but alongside that what I'd like to do with the rest of the leadership team is just kind of layout with some additional detail here's what scale up look like yours with go back would look like and put some jazz a little bit of meat on that it's not going to be a full-fledged parent is really to do either of those options at scale is you know something that we would need to spend a good additional year or more depending on what it was you wanted to do really planning for the execution of so we're our proposal is to take the next 6 to 8 months to kind of flush out two scenarios to have a conversation about and then we need some direction in terms of which way do you want us to go where you want us to spend time in what kind of moving towards do you want anything on that so that's kind of what we're proposing is next steps with respect to budget-balancing we're going to continue to every year whether we scale upscale back we're going to continue to be having these conversations on an annual basis to come free online and look at like okay we have priorities and we have needs we want to invest more how can we do that without a note scenario do we want to make the operational cost a lot bigger if we don't have a lot more students in particular right so we're going to come to to do that but I would like some direction in terms of where do you want us to really spend time on the is there boyfriend is there an opportunity and I don't know where it would fall but for a working group like what was had for the operating referendum cuz they're so funny big you know I need to be made he made here in direction from the community you know having an even larger at referendum later on as an option or you know increasing open enrollment seats but you know there's going to be a lot of opinions on that and could that be helpful I think the I think the visioning process would be it will be helpful and kind of starting to set some of that and yeah it certainly as we as we move over the course of the next few years like there's a lot of what we need to do internally disa figure out the like mechanics of things but yeah I think I mean I don't have a I think the right sage and be helpful to engage my group to my say something that would be a key part of the work that I would see we could stop over the summer and into the beginning of the school year because we really if we were only focused on strategic planning we could take care of that in a couple of months but we really need to do both things so before we would launch into a strategic plan I think we need to answer some of these questions come and get that Community input so part of a visioning process would include inviting stakeholders and we could see what that you know we would have some that are open for him we might have some that I really like you need to commit to be on this work group and we would have sat with the dates I think of work group could also help to dispel some of the misunderstandings cuz there's only so many point one or point you have to either moving Manute like little things here and there that's you no problem all of those. yeah I didn't as small as they are looking long-term and steadily declining birth rates and I was looking over this from the year 2000 to today is down in a birth rates decline by like 20% in Wisconsin and if it's studies out are we looking at a district that's instead of 1900 students is it sixteen or Seventeen hundred you know is that what we're expecting for the long run I don't know what it would be but is that how do you write size your district for that yeah I mean if we were to go if we were to scale back if you don't if you don't admit you know same number of open enrollment seats and that means with the current birth rate you have a district that 1,600 students I mean and that's exactly what I mean obviously we would continue to serve our residents students in the students that are here now and about what kind of experience they would have yeah and I think I mean that honestly like I think we were elected to make some of those hard decision so part of that is really honest but I also think it's really important and process of strategic planning envisioning that will we be really deliver at about him biting in representatives from all stakeholders who is particularly those that are typically marginalize right and Norwood usually have a voice it's easier always to get the first people raise their hands people you know to Big glue a lot of privilege and are you able to show up for so it's harder to do like and I would say like we just ended up I think with all good intentions a decade ago in a with a room full of people who were you no more able to commit like you know their evening the sky Vision in conversation and that didn't want a different outcome than in terms of what was and then when it was updated I think thanks to Kim Coleman and some other people we had a much better representation in the room and if the conversation I understand was really different I wasn't there for the first one but it was just noticeable it like you know just on our goals are on Equity what the community watch at least the conversation we're just different because there are even students in the room and made a big difference so I wanted to get you a question I think let's just say you're going to scale down we have to don't go into it yet can't go into the room without some real data on what you're talkin about what the cost and what it means and so those and how long it takes to do that in terms of changing let's say buildings all right and then changing which students are going to which building so you got to have some details before you even bring people this and that and then help educate the people around this is what we learned about this and these are the ways it will now help us you know so that they're not coming in and then just don't want people to throw out some new ideas but they might have to be around some likewise the other students in some other way I don't know I do want to be mindful of time we're not going to solve this problem tonight so getting the financials in the actual Logistics in the perimeter important that we get input from people that have some experience and understanding of that like that said skill-based I guess what you're saying and as far as class sizes are largest class so I brought her some pretty sure and so we already know like what are what are overall is we were year by year our rk3 k45 that's pretty much been pretty consistent from there so it's not a matter of like we're declining each incoming class is always going to be smaller it's that we are do you know what those are but they're going to be raising a grade so I know that sometimes that piece is it gets lost among the community and so I think there's good information that we already have that's where we're at decision point where we need to figure out which pathway to go and so I really appreciate you doing that I think so and put is going to be helpful because there is so much misunderstanding about like is this us managing or is this is this is a Statewide issue and Nathan was sharing we were actually performing better as far as having students that are just compared to the state overall birth rates and so doing some really good work but we don't always have the Nuance throughout the community to understand that so I put it in that thank you so much planning kind of the needs identified and then what the strategy is so thank you so much so I don't want to we don't have our student or grab so I guess I have some information for the board I can share weekly ad meet with Emma and Bella last week so information went out to 10th and 11th grade students today about becoming a student board representative interested kids need to introduce a written statement or submit a written statement by a then they also have to create a video if they're going to move forward with your candidacy and the election date is May 28th thank you for that okay then we're going to I will take a motion for our board adoption of our board consent agenda so moved Mauser Community for public comment anybody present would like to make public comment please just come state your name and your address you can actually come up to let other people for the record high as you've all received my email my address is 4459 Newhall so I'm going to make it quick because as a board and district and every parent who I know I have vocally shared as a king I need a consensus I think the biggest concern for so I'd like to thank you for extending another offer to Miss Young because as a community we loved her and are grateful that she's staying with the district we are concerned about the class sizes of cape coming in sorry I'm exhausted so now my brain is all foggy all of this makes sense and I think there's a ton of information I hear you saying this multiple times the community does not know any of this and I as a parent not that I'm not interested I didn't know this was here so I think that's an opportunity I think of for maximizing arcade bar sizes at 22 kids and I understand that some might leave I already know several parents who have are planning to drop their kids and enroll in Saint Roberts because of this decision and once they're gone they're gone so I think if we can get a third-class and drop that size we lost a really passionate family is that want to be in the district and I understand budgeting I really do and I have other thoughts that I can email you about that separately but that I really here on behalf of the families and the kids though I would like to keep in the district if there's something we can figure out how to do that thank you so much really appreciate there's a lot of really great oh we have any Publix online if we do you can unmute yourself again you can always email us at school board at Shorewood. k12.wa.us sorry I skipped to public comment and I apologize cuz I skipped right over the long-term capital maintenance plan should I do okay then we will Ride Along 2 review of to-do items 1 take away actually to-do item I think I talked about this with multiple of you but maybe over the weekend but but underscored by what Alyssa just shared I think there's an opportunity to Circle back with a lot of the work ants that we heard from this week about my sizes and teaching just to share some of you know links presentations so that folks who weren't here like Alyssa have an opportunity to learn bit more about kind of the big picture driving the decisions that impact their family and you know what am I so. and anything else you can think of could I ask just I know director joint has a lot on his plate has an update on the monitoring report for R2 if there's any updates on that just don't know how they have that it is the development of it we don't have a strict deadline but I was just wondering how it's progressing work working. that's all right that's right you can think of them later to then I will call us into recess and debrief and we are only slightly it about schedule so thanks for your wedding all right all what did we do well and what can we do better that's really good questions I think both of us I can cherry about leveling up that I think is just some of the most impactful work I think we've all you know where part of kind of admiring the problem for a long time around different levels of achievement in particular and to see something actually changing the results stomach Lee is really I'm dizzy so as usual like I don't know it's just like that we have to be mindful about about explaining them and that's tonight if right now a third of eight graders algebra in our goal is to get a hundred percent sure that's a big jump look we do better go to meetings moved along through some really difficult away hard work I appreciate that work because we know what the issues are okay no one thing this is so small but just think something is we had to knock an item cuz we we were just cuz we weren't interested how do we move the needle on a Keurig I think that is like the heart of it so but will and the first president in all directions I also don't want to give short shrift to the way that our budget formulation was structure to be really focused on student achievement I don't know it's it's stronger maybe the right word is like more explicit it wasn't that it was okay we are adjourned is it have a wonderful evening
