good evening and welcome to the January 10th 2023 meeting of the Sherwood School board thank you to everyone who is in attendance this evening in person it is great to see you and who viewed your  online you are here in the room or watching us on my own no decision empty seats my board president Parish I cannot be here tonight due to a death in her family so our thoughts are with her I'm going to do my best to provide this evening is fine president so our first order of business is I'll take a motion to adopt the agenda I move adoption of the agenda rent doctor stinky would you like to read the overarching results I would love to our students are leaders who challenge themselves to grow and Achieve academically pursue their passions learn continuously and contribute to the common good which is a lot of what we talked about yesterday and I work together Bella all right words and recognition for this evening I have quite a few which is always fun as we look at this I want to talk first and congratulate shs senior Alexis you for being named a top scholar in the regeneron science Talent search 2023 competition is the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors Alexis presented a research project entitled CEO regulatory focus and stock BuyBacks the moderating effect of CER near and restricted stock holding at the top 10 should be awarded $2,000 and Sherwood High School will also be awarded $2,000 but even better her project now advances in the competition and on January 24th 40 of the top dollars will be named finalists and the finalists will then compete for more than 1.8 million dollars in Awards during a week-long competition in Washington DC taking place March 9th through the 15th we wish Alexis the best of luck as you can see in this competition and when I see teachers here I'm just be proud that you inspire students this way and Alexis were wishing you the very best I'd also like to recognize sis science teacher Claire Burnett's are you here yeah I thought they thought they thought I saw you stupid and exciting opportunity for all of our 7th grade science classes last week she invited 8 guest speakers to come in across two days and talk about their experiences as a woman or nonbinary person working in a stem field students were able to ask each speaker such questions as how are you current and courage to go into stem and what kind of prejudices did you face in your field and how did you overcome them the speakers whose jobs range from entomology medicine to computer programming educated the students about the importance of steps they can take toward a career path into stem and most importantly inspired the students to dream big more information about the speakers can be found on our district website later this week a big thank you do you mispronounce for spearheading such a meaningful experience for our middle school students thank you very very much moving on to athletic accomplishments the Nicolet Shorewood ski team open their 2023 season by ski and giant slalom at the Rock snowpark under less-than-ideal conditions to go to the JV girls team in the varsity girls team took second place in the N B & S HS Varsity senior Emma Bailey earned a third-place Podium finish followed by three of her Nicolet teammates finishing in the top shs senior Louisa Fowler also finished in the top half of the fields showing the depth of this team varsity boys put together a strong team effort but did not place we look forward to hearing the results of the next race which will take place tomorrow evening go to the skating continuing girls basketball had to Great home wins this past week 1 versus Milwaukee Lutheran and 1 Racine Park so congratulations to them for these strong performances and last congratulations to the girls 16 for their season-high team score of 103.575 at the Elkhorn invite a few weeks ago the 18 invite featured some spectacular gymnasts and top-notch competition competition shs Junior Baker husky finished 11th on the beam and freshen and freshman Esme Cleavon finished 15th on the beam and 20th all-around great job to these gymnasts and keep up the good work that concludes the awards and recognitions tonight thank you so much you don't come to school board meetings frequently you might not know but we like to anger and begin every meeting by hearing about student achievement and results with the focus on a specific program so nightwear hear from Lake Bluff Elementary School student ambassador and we have our principal here roll up that other chair thank you I'm really excited to welcome our Lake Bluff principal Alejandra ovary acrylic to talk about what we are referencing along with our dean of students and I'm just so excited to have students here and like you said that word is anchoring so let's go better check attacks microphone so it's okay thank you again for allowing us to be here tonight we're so excited to have Rose Leo and Mr kregel here to Spotlight some of our exceptional student leaders tonight we are going to learn more about our late but Ambassador supposed to Creole do you think that the ambassadors have done within the school and I are going to do I think I'm very excited to introduce the two of them but just in general was the ambassador's really brings you like laid box in the community we had over 40 applicants this is tremendous and obviously. Google how they're doing and the various roles are taking on and Leadership that they're part of in school this year alone at the group has made videos for our student body on expectations behaviors and obviously just positive all models for the school in general I think it's really been a great start and obviously not we're in the middle of the school year but really big part of who the the school is most recently they've been tasked with naming our mascot the bagel whitch I guess he's had no name for a long time I'm new to this but they're very excited to come up with that name and you'll hear about that process from the students but also just what this program means to the students General the Ambassador and what they can do with it so I can play a little more about that in detail and also explain about the process of being an ambassador we have obviously Leland Road hello my name is Leo and I'm a student bachelor life recent be go through several stages that everyone can feel like they were boys and opportunity and its process we started by going to ready as with the ambassadors to find an efficient way to make it a end exciting and productive voting system start the bracket by sending Ames in which was a bracket that would be sent out your classroom teachers and have the students vote for a majority with that the beagles name is Buddy so this is a product of a summation of over fifty plus names that the students themselves came up with as you heard soon driven more rounds of voting great example again soon voice and choice banana carry on for years to come all students in Lake Bluff when they know the name Buddy the Beagle important process we think the ambassador's that have a huge part in our school and Community I will working on a number of ideas coming into 2023 but just to explain a little more about what this role means to the students and how they really taken upon themselves out here is Rose hello I am Rose I'm here to talk about what being an ambassador means to me since I was two years old and I always remember looking up to the bigger kids and that inspired me to want to become one too I'm always interested in making a difference on the opportunity came to school to be able to make a difference in school I took it as soon as I cut my goal is to continue Spinning Park perseverance responsibility and kindness around our school I didn't see what else we can accomplish this school year we want to thank everyone again for being here and think especially mr. kriegel who leads this Leo and Rose were two of our wonderful participants in the ambassadors say enough about how incredibly fortunate we are to have such inspirational leadership for for all of our Learners and they they truly exemplifies what it is to Live Oak Park values of perseverance advocacy responsibilities and kindness and now I'd like to ask teaching and learning my joint to come forward just and just for those of you it's so great to see so many people here for those of you that don't know we usually try to do just a snippet a real brief overview of something we're working on or some stew results that we want to celebrate and today mr. joint is going to be talking about the standards work that were working on and again not a big board report just meant to give you a quick overview of some professional development that were working on of the words that we have in our strategic priorities I'm like all right thanks so yes we are headed towards the mid midpoint of the school year so I thought this would be an appropriate time to talk about some of the Pee Dee work we've been doing and as doctors think you mentioned its relationship to our strategic plans so we're going to focus on the standards alignment work that we've done and just highlighter in the Strategic plan okay so standards alignment in a nutshell is a way for our teachers to work together to identify standards or skills and we talked about priority standards those are the most important standards and type of standards that can be transferred across lessons units and courses and in this work were working on identifying those standards and I'm not aligning it to success credit so like. Teacher talked there what it does for students is our goal is to create some common expectations again across those lessons you know courses classrooms and grade levels so we we talked about it provides Clarity for students and not having to navigate different sets of expectations on different assessment vocabulary I different rubrics as as they go through kindergarten through sixth grade and were using a book teaching with Clarity which was written by Tony front Syracuse is a local education Guru I happened to be my former director of curriculum and instruction when I was teaching so Tony mates with me and helps guide our work our work as we go through this so this is work that we're doing during our Wednesday early release time I know sometimes he had questions about what happens during that time and so this is just kind of a road map of monthly the progress that were I'm making in this work throughout the school year and it's just worth noting that there is no way that we got all this work done in one year so this is like the beginning of a larger process, but what doctor Frontier talks about is this Paradox which if you put yourself in the place of a student and imagine I think especially at a high school level traveling between classrooms and between grade levels that a lot of the brain power. since app to figure out is how to move between sometimes conflicting expectations directions scriptions and rubric and so that kind of creates what doctor Frontier talks about as as clutter and how just being successful successful in a classroom requires students to be able to first kind of figure out the adults before they can even engaged with the content so I did this relate Equity work in that sometimes we can diagnose that students might have an ability problem or or an effort problem where when we talked about how could we change the system to meet Sudanese it might actually be a Clarity problem that if we can be born a liar I'm in our expectations in our language was sued and said it would be easier for them to be successful in the classroom so the first step in this work was to create a shared purpose statement which I'll just read for you for this way is to have all of our teachers at Lake Bluff in that water come together and talk about what is their purpose as teachers and what are their main goals for learner's so our combined purpose statement that we're coming back to you throughout this work mr. Foster creativity and power Learners to think critically and use feedback to grow in an environment that honors all voices stories and backgrounds and as a result we support Learners purposeful efforts to communicate their understanding engage in authentic self reflect apply analyze and evaluate in order to show academic Mastery and then so what I appreciate about this statement is it kind of brings together the things that in my time here with we've had in separate buckets whether it's thought then learning work or the student results that you see at the board or the equity work that we've talked about your ICS framework and so that our next step was to align Aruba language Frontier talks about this so you could use any number of descriptors for this a lot of times people have heard of Bloom's taxonomy but the suggestion was we look at solo taxonomy because it's like a it's a very concrete weigh looking at how people learn the end so some of these words are kind of big and so we kind of it can be boiled down into those visuals that when we learn start set a unistructure level like with one idea and then as we learn more than this is called scaffolding as you're teaching that you start to teach kids multiple Concepts and then at the relational level restarting to connect those Concepts together ultimately that we can teach our kids to extend that in new ways and it's not to say that like you know structural is bad and extended abstract is good but this is just the natural way that students progress from one level to the next and so we can use this with students were if a student is out of multi-structure allowable and we've taken the time to Define what that means that it gives us some action steps to get them to the next level I always seem to make a cookie in analogy here so I'm going to make another one so I would describe this as like Yuna structural is I can follow one step of the recipe you like my son can crack an egg sometimes and at a multi structural level like you could complete the recipe at a relational level you can start to connect the dots and you could look at like two cookies and say this one was dry and this one was chewy and I can tell you why that was happening based on the recipe on an extended abstract I'm starting to like create my own recipes so ultimately that is how we learn so no one level is better than the next bye-bye intentionally working together and this will be able to help students kind of progress through this taxonomy so putting it all together this will be like what our shared purpose statement looks like and something that we always go back to us we're doing this work our next steps in this work which is where we're at right now and a lot of the work that will be doing with her upcoming PD today is as to go through or subject areas identify those priority standards and then worked together in our grade band so that we can stay Define what does this look like now I'm like we're talking about reading and key ideas what our expectations around that line to that solo checks on me at the first and second grade level all the way to the 5th and the 6th grade level and this would just be some examples of like those priority standards if you look at standards documents you're going to see hundreds and hundreds of Standards not all of them are transferable so we'll be looking $3 and and picking the ones that we think most impactful that we can focus our efforts around with our students that's it so cute Levolor cross buildings or apartments Elementary level right now at the middle and high-school level they're doing standards alignments documents but it's not with Lake this level of guidance I guess but it's work that we hope to expand K to 12 is so kind of certain building from the bottom up and it was it like at Waterman together thank you so much thank you and it is our first opportunity for public comment a couple of notes for folks who may be listening and virtually or here in prison for the first time or have been here in a while we don't typically answer questions during comments as a board but we are happy to take questions and follow up afterwards if you do want to give up public comment please share your name and address and let me or, 23 minutes I'm just out of courtesy for others yes I'm heading to many other cautionary thanks again there's three opportunities for public comment I think the next one is likely to be in about an hour so with that said when we start with the folks in person or here with two composite come in at this time I'm hello my name is Claire Bernards I currently reside in Wauwatosa so I am not a short but I am age for what teacher so hello, my name is Clara. So I'm currently a second-year teacher at SAS over the last two years in the district I have won a Wisconsin Society of science teacher award what a group of girls who have done Camp over the summer run our student advisory council at is served on her school leadership team at according to the science curriculum and just last week organized a guest speakers to come and talk about their experiences. all these opportunities have made me a much better and teacher that cultivated those skills in the last two years however a large majority of the growth that I have made in the last year has come from it any graduate school program this is the same graduate school program that our current dean of students at sis and our interim principal have attended the decision to participate in graduate school was it something I considered lightly I'm in about to many conversations with my co-workers about the benefits of attending this program and something I heard from their last administrative team that would be supported in the years to come however the ultimate factor that decided my enrollment was fine because of the steps and lands promised by the district and that was upheld this last year I was able to stay you can afford tuition because of the steps in line promise I am able to better family plan because of the steps in Lane promised I was how to afford a car after my car was totaled in August in a terrible accident none of which could have been achieved if I didn't have a plan and Financial Security ultimately the steps in lines do not just support our teachers support our students in our community thank you thank you anyone else want to get public good evening my name is Mary and I am a third or teaching my teaching here at Sherwood at the currently teach anatomy and physiology and design engineering and also 8th grade last year I stopped the last two for biology and chemistry but it's one of the things I wanted to tell you about little bit why I'm here specifically forward school district one of the things that Drew me to this as well as in support of the colonies I've been gagging when I start working alongside with like on the job when I started here I knew that I wanted to retire here and I mean Sherwood reputation for treating its educators of the professionals and experts in the field like while fostering an environment for all students to achieve meaningful success was not lost on me as an interviewee I look forward knowing every year that I will become better in my profession and more of an expert in my field I'm excited at the prospect of getting to teach things I've already had in previous classes which I've already had and it's not your car not to mention I get to share with them the same passion each year and a new flavor like that I have for their education and help them faster if I can do that because when there was gold prioritizes its students everyone wins when the district can retain teachers like me and better everyone wins when it offers real reliable schedules for pay increases to fund improvements quality of life and the light conditions of its staff everyone went when I and like we don't have to worry about our financial insecurity or and can just focus on our students and our jobs everyone wins Archer I would love and I really do want to retire here and I'm grateful that Sherwood has a system in place to enable me to do that with Stephen Lang you have my time thank you very much anybody else here books online if you're calling in sick if you're calling into the yourself any public comments from Zoom participants last call any public comments thank you for business but you have a lot of so we're going to start with a superintendent search dates so we are moving forward with our pool of candidates to our application deadline I believe was the end of the last week and I'm we received semifinalist we got 17 total application we will have preliminary interviews next week we have a realist I'm headed up pool that we're excited about that will remain confidential for now to protect the confidentiality but we are excited to before the month is out bring up finalists to meet members of the public and stakeholders across the district so stay tuned to your more about that schedule be a communicative very soon we're all very excited about this and thrilled to have several highly qualified candidates to choose from decorating is to consider a resolution authorizing the School District budget to exceed revenue limit by 5.5 million dollars per year for five years for non-recurring purposes and other doing if you want to start and then both Heather and I can answer any board members questions and I just wanted to make sure I never make brief remarks but I wanted to make a few remarks maybe would be more accurate regarding moving forward can I board members will review specific operating referendum resolution language that would be reflected on the April 4th 2023 ballot for Shorewood voters following this consideration of these resolutions are we will have information regarding the communications timeline and other things that you may have questions about but before we begin that discussion of the resolution or the next steps with the timeline and communication again a few remarks in the superintendent for more than 20 years I know this is a very serious decision for board members and for Sherwood staff and for most importantly Shorewood residents together with Director of Business Services Heather Haviland I want to review a little bit about the priorities and conditions that got us here because I think it's important to talk about both the board's commitment but also the history of what's been reviewed thus far going way back to the beginning of this school in the summer we talked about the possibility of leveraging and operating referendum a little bit ago my joint was up and showed our strategic priorities and one of those strategic priorities that we put up over the summer was evaluating this path of action it's of our key strategic priorities when Heather relayed the budget in the fall we again talked about this as a long-term solution and in Sherwood as a credit to the board two key areas are being called out in this and that I think are really important because in many of these operating referenda across the state they talked about for operating and maintenance conditions and that's the level of detail but two things are being called out in this board resolution that I think I really really important to consider and the first one is you'll hear the word student instructional and extracurricular programming and I want to just be really transparent we wouldn't be here if we did a prize student experience we wouldn't be here if we didn't take pride in the education that our staff delivers to our students and the board and administration makes a commitment to we say it as we begin every meeting we talked about sense of what do we prize we we want our students to be leaders who challenge themselves to grow and Achieve academically pursue their passions navigate change be changemakers learn continuously and something that I believe insult to my heart here contribute to the common good if we didn't want that to continue with such passion we wouldn't be here tonight but we also wouldn't be here tonight if we didn't think that what will occur in the five years with budget reductions would be erosive to that and believe me I believe that in my heart we will a road student experience and that really is a concern because it's something we prize the next year alone we're projected to need to reduce our budget by close to 2.5 million dollars 2.5 million and that's the beginning of projected reductions for five years to come and I don't say that out of fear I say that because of what I just said how can that not impact student experience but secondly in the resolution and that the board is considering tonight they are calling out salaries and benefits as something we prize and want to maintain and a dress using operational referendum dollars this community support of our schools is unparalleled and we don't take it for granted it weighs on me that in 2019 the community community supported of the sea these referendum would you pay for building projects and operational reprimand referendum is not the same thing it's meant to really fill the gap of what we aren't seeing in revenue from the state combined with inflation and combined with the using enrollment degree in other districts are seeing it's meant to close that Gap the board's been transparent in this discussion as I've said we've investigated this we've discussed it at the board table we formed an operating referendum work group that met five times in the fall and in the winter that came forth with a recommendation in early December that link to the summary of the operating referendum work group and that slide deck that was presented at the sporting board meeting is on the web and we will start to link that to a more transparency regarding referendum Communications as well but I always like to think that many of you are saying how did we get here did we get here do we really need this path is a solution and a path forward I wish I could say this is the one reason or this is the one reason is not that simple the first factor and I say this boldly is in a with State funding all school districts in Wisconsin have received a 0% increase per pupil for the past two years at a time on the state has the largest budget surplus in history Frozen and that's on top of special education reimbursement this simply is adequate for us that's millions of dollars our state needs to step up and we need to advocate for that but that's not going to happen before April 2nd and everyone knows costs have been going up and up and up everyone in this room and everyone listening bills the impact of high inflation we feel it too we see the rising cost of classroom maintenance Healthcare we see it it's real and unlike businesses it's not like we can raise prices that's the hard part of where we are as a public entity we've let our legislators know this time and time again and simply but there's a disconnect between Rising costs and Frozen State funding that in a great part is creating this challenge for us another school district but I think it's important to know that we are not alone in considering an operating referendum Fox Point Heroes Greenfield Cudahy Nicolet are just a few of the districts around us who recently have successfully operational referendum sadly are not unique to us over the years more of the responsibility for funding schools is really calling on Arlo taxpayers to databases that I just want everyone to hear 92 Wisconsin school districts have pursued an operational referendum in 2022 and 2020 392 we have 423 School District that's a little under a quarter taking a longer View Wisconsin school districts have put forth 295 operational referenda to taxpayers in the last five years since January of 2018 and of those 83% were successful I say that because I don't think this is our plight this is something that is exact for baited here but it really isn't unique to us not going to be shy about the MP enrollment in this discussion and yes we did lose some students during the pandemic but I have to say it in analysis of our market share is comprable to other school districts the bigger issue regarding enrollment is declining verse and this is unique to Shorewood this is a national Trend there are fewer and fewer children being born nationally and we are feeling that pinch here I look at this year's data we are graduating a class of roughly 170 and R4 a class is under a hundred that's not sustainable and that is going to continue there isn't a blip and we could stay yes if we would market and get more students we could sell this we would need 450 students that the quarter of our enrollment to solve this by just looking at enrollment and not going to referendum that's not these can we increase our enrollment share slightly and yes we'll work to that just like we will work to reduce expenses so with smaller and Roman we have done things to right size didn't respond we've worked to meet the needs of smaller enrollment last year and I look at our teachers and staff here we tightened our belts and reduced expenses by over $1000000 we listen to snap and citizen input and make difficult decisions as we budgeted and we reduced positions at the administrative and at the school and classroom level we eliminated Consulting contracts reduced operational budgets and we used our class size policy and looked intently at how to have the least impact on student learning and weary last year's budget by a million dollars we didn't and I'm confident we can find more efficiencies and we will need you as being good stewards of our budget and the trust that our community has in them but our need to reduce the budget for this school year was I want your occurrence as I said we project facing increasing need for Budget reductions largely next year and then to the years to come I speak for both Heather and myself we stand ready to answer the board's questions but as you can see what is resolution tonight for a 5.5 million dollar per year non-recurring referendum for the next five years we don't make this recommendation lightly we do it because we love our schools we love our staff I want to make sure that we're meeting the needs that are presented by a situation that we aren't able to look to the state to help us solve so with that I'm weed answer any of your questions but we know you've got two resolutions to consider tonight before we start the sky so do I need to read this on the question of the approval of a of a resolution authorizing the school district wait as though okay sure if you want to read it. All right I move a resolution authorizing the School District budget to exceed revenue limit by 5 90 and $500,000 per year for five years but non-recurring purposes no I moved it I second questions can I put the ballot language job do we have it play something I just want to recognize the number of educators I'm here tonight and and of course at community members as well. Anything beneath a I think we would make it but I just want to reiterate that thinking about our Patrick's ability to recruit and retain the very best teachers really is at the top of the list of reasons that we felt like we couldn't wait to go forward with the referendum the biggest risks sandwich we talked about and kind of taking more wait and see approach to see if we can you know make cuts and see how much they hurt didn't feel right so I just want to recognize that get your here and you know what at least what we've heard so far and I'm sure that more of you will come up is it exactly in line with what we had in mind as we and we don't take it lightly we know we're asking a lot of taxpayers but we also know that they support Educators in our district and they understand that teaching Excellence stripes in excellence would you like me to read the weight of authorizing statement goes to the ballot language and we do the Second Step so that they too it sounds similar to be resolved by the school board of the school district of show in Milwaukee County Wisconsin that the revenues included in the School District budget be authorized to exceed the revenue limit specified + 21.91 Statues by 5500000 dollars per year beginning with the 2023 to 2024 school year and ending with the 2027 to 2028 school year for non-recurring purposes consisting operational and maintenance expenses including salaries benefits and instructional and extracurricular programming and hopefully we'll adopt is today thank you question said board members have I don't have a question but I just we talked about this several times over the past several months and really in great detail in 2 minutes to meetings but I reflect on my experience as a citizen in Charlotte before joining the school board and how much I trusted the school board and the administrators teachers to educate my suit and I really didn't pay attention that much to the politics in the funding behind it and so I feel the needs to do justice for all the people listening and here today to just share that this was a hard decision all of us we all came into the room not knowing where any of us stood but knowing that this was going to be in front of us and the committee looked at two different amounts I just really want to chat so anybody that is suddenly like I need to pee now that you know the background even though we might not be discussing that today because we've discussed this already I want you to hear a little bit of it and so we looked at the 3 million and the 5 million and 3 million obviously I just didn't even need and we also had to work her beside you know we moved we wait a year maybe we do it this year and what we found is that we looked at the wonderful projections that Heather put together for us and it pretty evident to us that we do not want to compromise our district and we just come out of a pandemic people are still exhausted and we're still trying to figure out how to interact and engage with one another and manage changes that have happened over the years and thinking about a cut and what that would do to our community to our districts are teachers and administrators and funding and going out a positive trajectory I don't think any of us and when we looked at that projection for 5 million at 5 years old we were still concerned because it would look like we could potentially if things in the state didn't change it could potentially and Austin in a great position again and so we accumulate some reserves over the years but then that when the Sunday goes way that disappears and so we said one we couldn't wait but then so we had to explore higher amounts we looked at 6 million and what we saw that the attack on the taxpayer though it helps our budget really be financially sustain the impact on the taxpayer was one of us really grappled West and five point million is an amount that we thought could get us through and we'll still have to make some will still have to be tight with our budgets make hospice doesn't give us any additional resources because our state funding has declined so much that's why she Pizza Vino the contact and that you know that we really thought thoroughly about this and that I know that we don't want hundred percent support at moving forward I would you be willing to talk a little bit ago oh I'm sorry about that more precisely the assumptions in the 5.5 for Quest as we we did talk at length about different amounts Empire meanings but just wanted to quickly review for the board where we landed start it will be in this process and I appreciate with Becky staying to his and you do for those of you that are just coming to this we started with looking at like just a baseline scenario and making some and to be clear this isn't budgeting we're not God jadine we're just putting together assumption that seem realistic so that we see what path we could be on if these assumptions hold true and we did a couple of things when we just assumed slide enrollment let's just assume we're going to stay where we are going for I then we assumed a hundred dollars per year Revenue limit increase on state aid we Pursuit we assumed 2% which is been pretty consistent that trend has been about the same for the last several years 3% annual salary increase inclusive of all salary schedule changes an increase over the previous level of assumptions I know it doesn't feel like much in the current environment is actually higher than we had been for the last several where's the last time we did assumptions I think that Rodger went Rogers at the assumptions in 21 was using 2% based on history at 3% being a little bit higher though acknowledging with the information it doesn't always feel like that much we consume some certain Clause we know our healthcare costs are going to go up that kind of the nature of the world that we live in and also we have dated that helps us I don't understand where we're standing with that is it significant expense for us well as certain things like utilities and other fixed expenses that we really like those are things we have to do we can't we're going to continue to heat our buildings or continue to provide Healthcare we know that we're just going to have those class we have compared to the previous year we were stored school department budget cuts that we had initially made in 2023 when we did the preliminary budget last year and then we just assume we're not going to make any changes to student programming or not making changes to serve you this time and that we're going to meet I'm going to maintain our buildings and technology so we're going to take a look at like where things are aging where we're kind of just limping along where we know we don't want to be in the situation we were in in 2019 and not having funds to maintain our historic properties we want to make sure that we're paying attention to. as well so we just started with that side of basic assumptions and then we will watch it okay what is that look like over the next five years and when we did that that's when we saw these had a sizable cats popping up and I'm sure you know that's fine go to the one to the pink bar you're going to tell you this is what we when we did that this is what it looks like right so this is kind of our Baseline model as we started we went through this with some T-shirt with the work group that met as a Christian Keyes said over the course of the fall for five different meetings in that group was comprised that was of various members of the community with. Trader import representative so that's that we started with and how he got to our initial Baseline and then we looked at as we looked at what we could look like going forward we looked at filling a gap we did look at and say okay like we here in the community has also been aren't aren't you're saying you know we absolutely love our schools be absolutely want to maintain the same also said he wanted to be good financial stores NYC look at where you can make adjustments so we did also assume some adjustments going forward for the next five years it we're not asking if you need to observe a hundred percent of our cat will do some work too so that's where we came up with the model that we shared December 20th is that and I know it seems obvious but when you look at the total deficit projected over five years that's where you get to a roughly 5.545 years I mean it wasn't like we pulled the number out of want it was about what the assumptions yielded again I really appreciate it what you said not in budget but what is that project out as if you say you've got flat enrollment for five years with this amount of state aid with these parameters of wanting to make sure that we we do some things now like I said that's where the number came from and then I think the board talked about really wanting to make sure that we were and that's where I I appreciate what you said 35 65.5 I think this gives us that cushion for we are what we what where we want to be in 5 years now I can't project that that will I mean I think this is where we say will something's potentially change sure it'd be great if we get some more students but like I say any one of those there's isn't going to solve the magnitude of this does that make you do you get more students who get a little more state aid you know you cut a reduce more expenses yes and that's what it is that's what it looks like I do appreciate you talking about how the assumptions are not the same as a budget I mean I just I want to be clear that those aren't there some girls that's not what we hope to see happen that's right like would it be accurate to say that second serve yes and we know that that will likely not be the perfect you're being precise outcome right I mean I hope it's not I hope it's much better but are we at 3 years better than to try to make bold predictions for even the near future so we know the rest are but I think you know as we're trying to make decisions about a future we have to take some make some attempt so and and we know there's just not good there's there's not a good sign that the state is going to come through a massive amounts of new funding and ignore will there be a baby boom 5 years in the past magical so that physically possible so not going to happen for us this is our best attempt to make war but of course we also know and then next five years you know if it's a surprise we're also going to be making systemic changes to our operating model that we hope our modest and don't harm students right but we're also not asking for a referendum in the hopes of avoiding making any changes in the way that the the district is round or B or being physically fiscally responsible so you know just to be clear cuz we talked about not wanting to end up in the same place in 5 years that we are today other comments questions before we think about we have a motion as on the floor on paper Ocean passes or 20 I will start and then I do like we do this I can do it again I moved the following resolution resolution providing a referendum election on the question of the approval of a resolution authorizing the School District budget to exceed revenue limit by 5 million $500,000 per year for five years but non-recurring purposes thank you Becky so we looked at the again this is April 4th we talked about the reasons that we felt was important to go this year instead of I knew wait so that means we are on a really fast timeline you know folks that are listening and build a snack up on them and it's too fast in any more information that's understandable but we know even if this is to pass the be a delay before we actually have this new Revenue to work with and we didn't want to wait further after that so you know we're going to work really hard to agenda item is to talk a little bit about our commune Jason plan but felt it was really important to bring it to you sooner rather than later so that point there are some restrictions but when we have to be out there by state law that we have to be ready to have something in the ballot for April 4th also we have to move forward until there's two things at once we have to as a was working with other and Joanne but as a school but we must prepare the budget at certain times that we had prepare a budget as if we don't have when the resolution and we have to prepare a budget as if we do and so you're going to have to keep these think two things going at the same time it may show people even more clearly what will even if we don't pass the resolution because they will see what the budget begins to look like as reforming it but we will be doing these two things simultaneously and we have in our packet and we have on I get all the details on the election was it looks like and how people will be asked to vote in own terms of how its phrase for the voting it's pretty much what we just read but sometimes people get confused and it's pretty clear language yes or no we work for Clarity on it a sweet each other questions you know exactly how to look all right everyone Mark April 4th on your calendar and I'll Russian houses where did you perfect thank you everybody I mention our communication plan Joanne can you speak a little bit what went into this document we have in front of us sure by way of that I'd like to introduce Lori Miller from the Donovan group they have been helping us as we began in advance of tonight as we know time is is of the essence I'd like to introduce you to Lori Miller from the Donovan group who has helped us work on Tuesday means that I think are critically important right now first of all a timeline most importantly to talk us through what are we doing between now and April 4th and then secondly some key communication messages and I know that Lori will when she comes on to a little bit about getting some board input regarding those and talk through some of the things that are there and I know I told board members this but I just want to reiterate dentist I know we're working to get Lori up so I'm going to just talk a little bit I just want to make sure you understand this isn't a document that we would distribute this is just what we would use to put on a fact sheet and what we would use in terms of messaging and that are just points we want to be clear so with please let me introduce Lori Miller from the Donovan group who is going to talk through some key ideas with you Lori are you here are you able to hear me okay we can see you there can you speak up a little bit we just left I am speaking as loud as I can alright I am based in Florida a little bit of both the Donovan group and myself and what brings me to be with you in this very important moment in the Sherwood School District again is Jo-Ann's shared I am doctor Lori Miller my background is I have 26 + years of education all in Wisconsin versus a middle school teacher and then as a director of curriculum instruction and the served my last six years as the superintendent in the school district of beer after that I became a partner the diamond group and the diamond group is is a headquartered location in Milwaukee so very close by to you and the Donovan group has been serving school districts throughout the country for the past 17 years we are a national public relations firm that only serves school districts and we serve school district for all of their communication needs whether it's that social media content all the way through informing your Monday through a referendum engagement process and everything in the middle so it's a night I am here to just share with you what that referendum engagement process can look like for your community and the plans that we have sight in ways to do so and really it's important to understand that the referendum engagement process is about informing your stakeholders your taxpayers about your needs much of what you've been discussing tonight sharing your prep what solution which is your resolution that you just passed a resolution that you just passed and then answering any questions that they may have and it's also an opportunity to engage your stakeholders on feedback that they may have about their their mission mission for the success of the Shorewood School District to take over the screen really quickly here and pull up a slide deck is it showing on your end it is awesome all right so our purpose tonight my time with you is really to discuss our roadmap for that engagement process I want to make sure or that we have consensus on a messaging and talk about why that's really important and then I'm also going to just share examples of a local nearby Wisconsin District to give you an idea of what some of these communications were look like throughout your own referendum engagement process and then I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have so the start we always create a roadmap which serves as a timeline it's a Cali as a strategy to help us stay on target with that referendum engagement process and so I know that you all as board members have a copy of what's called communication calendar in your materials you'll see that we have very specific tactics or actions that are in the category of communications or engagement that are going to be accomplished in each of the different months leading up to April 4th and so here on the slide you're just kind of seen a high-level look or perfectly for those in the room we don't have those materials in January board accident that just happened so that we can check that off our our time I'm already and the neck this next few weeks will be working on doing a lot of development and design of a different kinds of communications that will be shared with your stakeholders we will set dates for Gage massages and we'll talk a little bit more what that looks like second and then we also will create what we call an engagement slide deck that helps your team get out in front of the community and all of your stakeholders to share the needs in the proposed solution as well as a fraction as we move into February we start to to continue with other development and a lot of that will be social media conference web content that includes an FAQ and actually that FAQ we might get out sooner in we're here and we will develop one Mailer in February and if you look at had we also have another mailer that goes out in March that goes out to all of your shorts School District residents that will contain information again and about the our needs the proposed solution and offer ways for the community to continue to engage with you all as we move closer to the April 4th date you can see for yourselves there other products that come and play just to help with with our messaging and so what will happen is we anticipate a series of media outreach opportunities so getting in front of different Civic group Service Groups anyone who'll have us do you listen to our needs and engage with us about how do we maintain and protect the great tradition of Excellence that we have in the Shorewood School District so as you heard one of the strata he's in our timeline is to hold engagement sessions and engagement sessions are super important it's an opportunity for you to inform but also to receive feedback typically the superintendent or members of the leadership team along with board members will facilitate and host these engagement sessions and at these sessions we share the needs are why why are we coming to our taxpayers with a question we share our proposal Mission and it's an opportunity to seek feedback from our our stakeholders about what they like with their hearing what they have concerns about allows us to hear their questions and make sure we we answer their questions in full I didn't Clarity only anticipate that we will be setting date for a few of these as in-person events and then also hosting a Facebook live event for those who cannot participate in person and then the really the goal these Fashions is to engage that two-way conversation about those needs so that your community has a strong sense of ownership of the solution that is placed on the ballot leatherneck strategy is I Define what are those key messages that we want everyone to understand about our referendum engagement process and these are really strategic there intentional to be clear and assistant so that everyone understands what our needs are it creates a compelling case or our needs of that why we need a proposed solution and shares the tax impact and for the Sherwood School District we've identified she messages so I say we do the district leadership team has been working really hard to identify what are those key messages that is important for all of us leadership in the sky the staff our families our community members board members to understand as we go into this process so the first one is student-centered and is is committed to showing the value that your School District brings to the community as a former Wisconsin educator and educational leader I know when I hear Shorewood School District it evokes a sense of tradition and pride I know that you have been a district that has a strong reputation and is revered by many across the state and that's what we want to lead with with our key messages that you have the strong commitment to enter Pro a proven history of delivering a high-quality education that serves each and every one of your students we are pursuing an operational referendum to preserve that tradition as we talked as a team we spoke it was important that we connect the ski message to your mission that you have this commitment to Equitable student results that you really value that do an experience Joanne talked a lot about that the beginning of your last conversation here and we also want to keep our focus on the whole child is there so much in terms of services that school districts provide to each and every student want to go through each of the five my messages and I'm going to pause on let let board members kind of comments on that and see if we have consensus on these the next key message then shift to our focus on her Channel 2 staff it's so critical to retain are are revered staff right now but also to attract more as we move forward we value our highly talented staff Who deliver on our mission everyday we're pursuing this referendum because we want to make certain we retain and attract people who positively impact student learning so when we talked about this as a team as a team the two words that are really critical here is repaying mean attracting we know that we have some of the best of the best in our classrooms that the teacher is what makes the magic happen in the classrooms it's the the most amazing staff member in the hallway whether it's a food service custodial secretarial staff member everybody what is an important role to make sure that that magic happens when students have success and that there's really strong week maybe I've used it for probably but there's strong in the community for the work that you all do on behalf of the Sherwood students and their families the next key message then is that we are facing a looming funding crisis and that was much of your last conversation District's declining Revenue come and with the increasing cost that's due to inflation allow those assumptions you're just talking about that jeopardizes our ability to advance our mission of achieving Equity growth and Excellence so we are pursuing this referendum because we I was compensated for that lack of funding available to protect our existing instructional programs and services really strong language here to protect what we have so again when we plan this message we thought was important to highlight that this this looming funding crisis is really stemming from a decline in Revenue cost of inflation it's important for all of us to continue to invest in the success of our schools funding continues to be unpredictable and as much has been highlighted tonight unsustainable and its current form the next key message speaks to your role the board and District that you've been fiscally responsible with the management of the taxpayers funds are good physical stewards and the district and board have worked hard you have worked hard to reduce cost and remain fiscally responsible on behalf of students fail taxpayers we are pursuing this referendum because despite our efforts we are still facing those challenges again messaging here we wanted to make sure that our stakeholders understand we've worked to reduce our our expenditures are we really are concerned about the impact of reductions on our students and the experience that they have in the classrooms in our schools we think it's important to look at the overall context of the state of Wisconsin and demonstrate that has not unique in facing this challenge we want to make sure that our community understands that there has been a work group that's come together to review the challenges and to come forward with with a recommendation for all of you to consider as a solution and even with an approved a referendum that we will still have to make further reductions that word we're not asking for a want or asking for what we need to do to operate successfully and I'm the last key message speaks to taxpayer impact this is really important to your taxpayers right they wants to know what is the Imp going to be on my pocketbook essentially so thanks to the district sound fiscal management and approved operational referendum would have a minimal impact on property tax payer we are pursuing this referendum because we must find a sustainable solution to fund our operations and here we want everyone to hear your commitment to making sure that you know with your most recent run of you been on time and on budget with that cap referendum and that you are concerned about the impact that this will have on your taxpayers and so finally that that compromise of how can how can the school district and the community together to feel the least amount of pain to protect and preserve what is really essential to your ongoing success as a Shorewood community so I'm going to stop there and I know that you have you messages and I'll tell you I'm just as Joanne shared before this is a document that we we will use internally that you have that helps serve as a guide post the chemo those are used to keep us all on the same page and the how we talked about the needs and our solution in the Y but also helps our our team the production team that works at Donovan group create the tools that you need to get out in the community and share share your process and we want to make sure that you all have an opportunity to weigh in on these key messages and make sure that we have consensus around on so is that I'm going to open up in and just let board members react to these messages I want to First react to the the calendar and want I want all of us to remind all of us that a large portion of our Community go to absentee early voting so post cards that are going out at the end of March they already voted so we need to get those dates and we need to be sure that our materials are going out early enough to catch those who in Florida and going to vote apps are very important when we're starting to talk about meeting with the Greater Community on these meetings we must respect the fact that a large percentage of our community is older citizens who are bearing the brunt of the expayer increase and we need to meet with them we need to meet with senior citizens we need to hold meetings in the library we need to talk to our village board trustees so that they understand the total impact on a totality of the citizens and what citizens are being asked to pay for because his village has huge needs also in terms of infrastructure we've got needs and we need to be communicating and finally whenever we talk about the cost to the taxpayer it needs to not just a minimal it has to be doctored up to. Per $300,000 or per 100 to say that say what it cost so that the person is it math and multiply how much their house or how much they rent might go up due to these things so I think we can't gloss it over we have to say what the dollar amount is agreed so we should just keep that Batman okay those are my nephew thank you all good thoughts I also would like to come check that. as low as possible and compared with a capital referendum within operating referendum it's not it's a movie Target our projections show show taxes going down right because of the trends that we're currently under right to chose our property tax. But we can't predict that exactly so we can give estimates and what we're giving right now in the. cement has the higher what we think is a high-end estimate not a low-end estimate but you know we're hopeful that that that's a high on the mountain just to be clear like with the capital it's a definite amount dance without you it's much easier to be that specific about it it's harder with operating where we don't you don't know exactly how much we're going to get from the state I think you've brought out but I think it would be a good FAQ entry navigate to but but I think it's important for the community like because they have the facilities to run them in their most recent memory would be really how old is to compare the butt given what you just said it's hard to compare feel like just saw scale you know in terms of dollars what we're asking and then you know even first-year impact on their on their tax bill on versus what they experience with the facility is referendum be really helpful and also just functionally how this is different from the facilities referendum because it is 2 and 828 after 5 years and in contrast to the I think my cap question was just how soon we can have an FAQ and back seats up on the other line and I know that but our conversation today as a team it's in I would say it's in pretty good shape where we plan to have some type of FAQ up on your website I think Caitlin was going to make that happen sometime tomorrow the we will be adding to the fa adding to the FAQ throughout the process because as you go out and you do engagement you're going to get new questions that are really important for us to address for your ear stakeholders will make sure we continued to add any ball that FAQ as it needs to to make sure that work or sharing all the information that we need to for everyone and then I want to say it might be tomorrow or the next day started reorganizing it into kind of a point and a section on general information which would explain what an operating referendum is some of those Basics and then financial information and then other information such as where play V or some of those things and so we were just starting to organize the many questions into different areas so that if we add it and it falls into an area doesn't just become that they're all over number feel like M35 relates more to questions while I don't know if I'm being clear but if we'd organized so that's what we started working on today but we've got both the mill rate and the projected impact and will be of course getting that out there I agree with you wholeheartedly and I also agree on the idea and trying to be mindful of everybody's time being mean to organize and be present at these sessions I think to in-person sessions is not enough so I'd like to see do something closer to 5 and Facebook live is great. Everybody including myself is on Facebook anymore so I would like to see it just host on Zoom you know some folks are not on social media and I don't want that to be a barrier if they're not going to come in person you know then it should be as easy as clicking on a link on a website and I would like to see one preferably to Virtual opportunities for folks just can't make it in person and I don't want that to be a barrier to getting information or ask questions a dynamic live setting we're related to that sorry I meant to ask but that would be great to see an opportunity so like if I log on and read all that big huge you know maybe there hasn't been an infestation in yet or maybe I have a new question if there's a way to submit an additional question that may be as specific to my situation or no wonder that I have. fabulous oh and in terms of the info session who is leading those is bad like is there going to be like one board rapid each one or what's our thought about whose presence but at least two administrators with each of us taking a different section and two board members or at least one or two board members and again trying to pick some different sections for the message I know that you've got a really busy January so weird balance all of that into January and February my depression sorry I bet you didn't get a chance to say anything talk about the community engagement and how I I thought we should definitely have more than one online five sounds like a lot in the little that a little bit yeah I don't know if you know that it but you're assuming just the building I think we have to have one that needs the community needs in the library to be live streamed or video resume so weak should I be doing one in each building this is a greater community so we can use our facilities that have the largest space and we can use the village space I hope we'll work on getting those that now they are trying to know something surround that I agree with you yeah and I was just going to ask you do you have like a liminary calendar for that knowing that will work on it now that we kind of know the number that were working I will get that done in the next 2 days, and Bella and I just wanted to ask you if you have questions or comments about either the referendum Revolution or where the communication about it and set up to be me to get it across the village other feedback for Lori thanks for hanging out with us Lori just one more thing how you know we're going to have this on our website and all of that but a large majority of our community is not engaged with the district and how are we going to get that web information to them for us to mailings that are being projected so to all residents which is one way we'll reach out and then we'll also you know use the village managers and other we've got a wrecked mailing list we can work with with citizens I just trying to get two more people and then just say we have the superintendent search button on the front and we also have 4K registration and we'll put a button on the very front of the website in a first-class first page first click that will get us there as well we're just working on that button now okay thanks but I think that to your point it's really depending on our out putting the messages for people to necessary I mean we want the website to be on compassing in terms of information but it can't be the sole cool that we rely on for people to get information but it is where they can go to get more information and that's what we might use with a q r code on the mailing that would get people there as well show us some pictures absolutely I was going through some pictures by just just like clothes that that part of our conversation when we go through the referendum engagement process we're going to engage ourselves with as many different communication Google strategies as we need to and you'll see and you'll note that we have a road map that's a guidepost but that's all that that is a guy post as we need to respond to the contextual love your community will do so and so that may Force us I assume and anticipate it's going to force us to come up with ongoing different strategies and will be able to Flexin and do that as we need you to make sure that we do leave any any strategy unturned if you will have to make sure that we have success for you off I have a trustee and since it's the ballot initiative before or after those we could have info sessions because you are a partner men's club Club high school students and the $11 usually yes absolutely oh yeah and I think what the last thing we wanted to do is just there with you some examples of what some of these communications will look like moving forward I'm just using some examples from a recent a client that we work with the Verona Area School dist Dane County they just worked on it and operational referendum back in November and so this is an example of it's a one pager but you're seeing is 22 Pages here but it's a one pager front and back that served as a fact so Apache to something that will be working on during the month of January here for your district and anticipate in the next week or so we'll have a pretty solid draft of that for you to be using upcoming engagement sessions I want to just kind of visually show the board what some of these strategies look like that yeah this turns into that exactly and then you'll see here for the same school district this is a four-part mailer of panimalar recall this so you have to think about it being scolded so the front page is actually on the right hand side and the back page is on the left hand side that you see here I heard Joann mentioned qr-code you can see example here to learn more things to the website but this is a type of matter in this will be the inside portion this is a type of Miller that we will develop using the key messages that we are talking about tonight to mail out to all of your residence we just wanted to give you an idea of what this work looks like and how it comes to fruition but really weird again just so grateful to be able to be a part of your team and help engage your community around this really important work and I'll be happy to answer any other questions that you may have thank you so much Lori for being here when do you think we'll have a chance to review the McAllen materials that you're preparing what you just propose yeah so our team continues to produce and I am meeting on a weekly if not almost daily basis right now with your your school district leadership and I don't have an exact time because there's a lot of pushing pole and if we want to make sure we get this right for you but like I said I do anticipate that we will have a first draft of your backseat and engagement slide that goes over the next two items along with finalizing your FAQ for your website those are the key pieces that are coming up next So within the next week you're going probably eyes on all of those items and as a board we want to hear from you if you feel like any of those need to be adjusted as we continue to grow throughout the process but I'm particularly are named by here in my house on an almost daily basis combined with the word awesome difference in the lives of my eighth grader did not leave my children in a good place and I know a lot of you parents can relate I'm grateful for School District staff that work Tyler tirelessly and selflessly to support my own children joy in learning their academics their mental health and their states and themselves to work towards a positive future and a very scary world those four things I felt like I couldn't do and all of these miracle workers did that in a very hard time and I just want to keep all of these people here forever so that everyone can experience it so it's my hope that this referendum again with gratitude is my hope that this referendum serve as an opportunity to commit to a predictable pay structure to help ensure that this Legacy of dedicated Innovative and experienced teachers continues in Shorewood anybody else 14/3 doubt about our current Food Service management contract last year the May 24th meeting the board of education do you need a place to renew the food service contract Jordan School District in our Mark She-Ra was despite the money just to the armor image the world like a man walked on his boat and slavery directions to send that information to my Nord in the working-class America support and working i c e concentration camps Monarch of the board of the old immigrants Crossing in may I observe something our foods and multiple saved the educational facilities have to go eat and then violated federal labor law and cremation multiple times the Jews made to contain to find armor would that we could not my finger food service and make that turn on that quickly and not be discussed 3 winter holiday break the corporation has fundamentally they will disregard all morals and regulations for where we're at the high school team took down there could be molding have fingernails or hair in it stops and taste and nutrition and when not the only guys can't freeze step claims that many times in a row or skip a step stool and for your taking advantage of the fact that you've been weakened by once you do that for what like 45 years if you do it again next year you're not doing something you were coerced into buy a difficult financial situation you're attacking Scott Walker and using his legislation to hurt people I see everyday are enticing bars in every day and it worked tirelessly to help educate us thank you thank you Sylvania School Board as I have stated in previous public comment and I'm sorry as I said comment and Communications with the board I do believe we need a referendum I think we need more flexibility in the revenue limit for me and many of the reasons discuss today being said I'd like to reiterate the three  but I made my email last week 1 to disclose a more detailed view of the underlying assumptions and projections underpinning the five and a half million dollar ask I don't believe that the just the deficit or Surplus project it's efficient and to the discussion earlier on the point that after having one made it's all so confusing to the community when you don't have visibility to what the projections are a kind and so I think that would be very helpful and clarifying the why behind this as well as just the underlying assumptions in terms of how much of it is revenue driven versus a phone number to develop and commit to formal and transparent process to me metal taxing authority over the next five years I'll talk more about that in a second and number three to start now to evaluate and operate sorry to start now to evaluate and involve our operating model to ensure greater stability District going forward some of the discussions I've heard to date around opportunities to cut I feel are more around the margin and I think those types of cuts are going to her students and teachers and we have to take a deeper look at operating model and look at where we have opportunities to rethink the operating model we have a relatively high-cost remember if you look at Epi data or in like the 89th percentile there's why variability in our you know in the way that school districts are structured from a cost perspective there's something to be learned there so that we can take an approach that is good for our it's good for our teachers and she's the results that we want I really want to focus it's really difficult to predict the future particularly right now particularly with the high inflation like we should be it's our assumptions are probably going to be wrong like that just you can't have a 5-year projection and not have it and I think any more control than face cuz it got to guide the decisions that we make over the next five years based upon how right or wrong assumptions are on both the wrapping on the cost side I asked disparity in the water linkage handle that are fun so it puts us in a bad position like we seen was Dustin Williams and not having flexibility on a year-to-year basis of handling those scenarios and only to a point so I would like to ask for help I'd like to ask for a form of unbalanced policy that specified what are Target fun downstairs and and ranges around I've heard a 10% Target I don't know if there's actually on my bouncy house and I'm sorry I know I'm not supposed to 10% is considered very very low minimal not advised by Major something to eat we strive for my understand that we can be below it and half million will result in a higher mill rate or higher incremental taxes then you will Community if we end up with revenues higher than expected and I feel like if that happens and you should provide property tax relief I think there is an area is where if expenses are higher like it makes more sense it makes sense to build but some of the projections that I saw that were shared that we would provide property tax reliefs I believe my my message here is just because you have permission to tax up to five and a half million dollars above the revenue limit doesn't mean that you necessarily have to and I think the transparency around friends that are going into the going to be the ask should be transparent so that we can measure against those and make decisions appropriately so that we we keep property taxes as long as possible property tax in Florida really high and if it's an equity issue and it's an issue for people on fixed incomes and and I just feel like we need to have good rigor and controls around that to ensure that we've got for making good decisions going forward and being p.m. that the board is the best discuss two words for the penny stock dollars asper 4330 North Alpine has a bit of deja vu because I think the last time I came to the school board meeting there was a lot of steps and lands to session and I came to talk about something else I was just in case tonight here to talk about the complaint that was filed by the former IT director of the school district which I read last week and I saw a lot of things that I was expecting to see you in that complaint based upon the media and the community discussion around the topic but I saw something else too and it was something way worse and it actually compelled me to come out here tonight to talk to you and I'm going to read it to you what I saw in the complaint complaint remember was written by people with access to text messages which I haven't seen in fall but here's what it says in one message Miss Roscoe Miss Tucker Miss Salem and mr. Coleman discuss a teacher who was continually being beaten up mr. Coleman, said that he quote hoped it would happen again and Miss Roscoe said she hoped Brian Davis the district superintendent would not interfere there's a lot to unpack there but I want to focus on one thing that might not even be what jumped out to everybody in this room when they hurt heard that what kind of child comes to school and continually beats up a teacher I will tell you it is a child who is struggling it is a child who is working hard to overcome challenges in the classroom is a child who needs support if this school district is doing its job under the law is a child who has a 504 plan or an IEP and it's a special ed student also known as a child with a disability it's not my child I have a child with a disability this one isn't mine but it might as well be inter how I feel about the situation Sherwood School District has legal obligation to that child hopefully everybody on the school board is aware of what those legal obligations are it supports and services its help making progress goals this is undoubtedly a bigger legal problem that maybe we thought we had on our hands but this unfortunate circumstance but in these messages I see the opposite of that I see adults who are actively discussing undermining that child's progress I have to tell you if I had to drop my kid off at a school where I thought the principal who has to sit in a lot of these talk to parents about their kids goals in the progress they're making towards them was sending messages like this about my child I don't know what I would be saying in front of you today what kind of an adult much less than educator hopes that a child shows up to school and fails it is stupid enough to put it in writing to their colleagues it's not the kind of adult that I want working with my kids I think a lot of people in this community could say the same whether or not their child has a disability if you saw those messages you all did and you didn't think there was a problem you should think about whether you belong in the school board and if you saw those messages and knew there was a problem and continue to let those adult work in our school without any repercussions about this specific issue forget the adults talking about adults to other adults this is our kids I think you should also think about whether you were on his board and then the last thing I'm going to say is that I've heard a lot of talk tonight about money lot of talk about money and we have money problems in the school district but I'll tell you something the problems we have with Integrity with a lack of a student Centric Focus not going to be solved by any amount of money thank you is the clarify so during public comes we are never going to comment on personnel is where I'm going to get done so anybody else but it's also hard to follow thank you my name is Heather for Kelly and I live at 4154 Northlake Drive I have three children at that water so all in elementary I also like someone else tonight moved here in 2010 in part because of the schools I also like someone else coming tonight did not pay much attention to things until about two-and-a-half 3 years ago I know that a lot of people will vote Yes to this referendum because of a general sense of nostalgia about what they think so is goals are because they're older and they remember when the school truth schools truly were number one in the state when I moved here there were there were signs and every yard number one high school in reminder sending the high school still is really great for my understanding a lot of those teachers who made it really great are here but since I've been paying attention to conversation has been whether or not the board wants to pay them it has been trying to handcuff the community into hang more and more money for the teachers they want to be here there's a lot of consensus that the community wants the teachers but maybe not a lot else that is happening in the district so what I don't see in any of the is true transparency about what are you proposing to cut if there is a no on the referendum what will we lose what will we gain what will stay the same I don't mean graphs and charts that show Gary now as I'm saying you need to 10,000 more dollars to fund a graduate program for the teacher who talks for you need fifty thousand more dollars to fund a Spanish program to keep it going how it's going what are the real numbers where big poll results are pretty smart we can handle it show us the numbers and so I just really implore you I know it's fast you're doing this in April you cannot just roll through this on a handcuffing us all to funding teacher sat some point it has to stop to steps and Lanes show us how you're going to budget for it every single year because what you've shown tonight is that five years from now you will be coming back for another referendum because there has no plan shown to how the budget will be changed going forward to match the district's you have with the enrollment you have with the Open Enrollment seats that you have that are only find it at 60% nothing's show what you're planning to do to face the reality other than ask for more money thank you thank you Enterprise 3820 North Kraemer kind of follow-up on tonight out of the school board meeting was in the forever and it was first proposed in the summer time with your school board member say it's on the teachers to get this past the teachers who got dumped on last year threatened to every year and handcuffed every year are we going to fund such delays or not it's on them to have it past no it's not it's not on them so I think I deserve it so I didn't think they deserve that yes I do I'm a big fan of that but I'm not a big fan of putting it on teachers back to pass this referendum but we heard tonight that at this rate we're going to be down 450 students y project out of flat enrollment is over the next 17 years or 5 years like 13 years from kindergarten it's just consumed this year's seniors by the sound of this year's kindergarteners will be seniors we're going to be down for 150 students y project a flat enrollment when we know that we don't have a birth rate that's going to support or higher enrollment I think that it would be respond or open enrollment fees are too high this point span of open enrollment I'm a fan of open enrollment that fill in a seat or fill into seats right now with over 200 students that are open enrollment if you divide that over the 13 years a class that's about 20 classes worth of students I think if there's a way that we could look around the budget see where we can make the cuts that you know, that because I don't think that the community understands how old Roman is funded how we don't get the full funding from these other school districts but that it it does help us when it's on a small amount but I think we've gone over the cliff and if we're going to keep a flat enrollment that means we're going to add another 400 ft so we're going to be at 650 in the next 12 years of open enrollment students and that's not how we're so funny that way I also feel like like add with the responsibility of showing us how the money is spent just fully responsible with the community's mummy money we had three business directors who told us about the same year after year here and we haven't made the cuts until this year and now we're in the situation we were in speaking of fun balance our fund balance policy is 10% it suggested best practices 25% we're looking to get to 45 why do we need to get the 45% I'm afraid that if we just passing taxi taxing that we are going to run people out of the district that can't afford to be here by the homeowners or renters because the cost on the properties are going to be pulled off onto the onto the renter so it's not going to end and that's going to lessen our Equity lesson our diversity in the schools and I think that we might end up doing more harm than good thank you thank you district and first want to thank everybody that is present during the school board Administration teachers show me the my overly disappointed in choosing scroll Public School and a good experience my kids learned a lot they have tribes here has been great and I know there's a lot of hard work and effort that goes into all of it I did come to this meeting tonight exclusively to hear comments and help me understand the potential referendum Houghton pack me and my family and everyone else in the village of Shorewood that said I do have a couple questions so I'll just get those off my notes really quick so I can burn through them none of them which have to be answered tonight I know you guys showed that 5 year model that shows eating deficit and echoing some of what others have said now there's not a clarity as to how you guys came up with those numbers so I know our superintendent Express in beginning the need for transparency and I'm very excited to see that although I don't have a understanding after tonight where that transparency is going to come in when it's going to be shown but you know such simple questions like you're showing this deficit increasing over the years what factors into that are we accounting for decreasing staff based on downward Trend in enrollment I just understand where the numbers are coming from so it's hard for that graft even mean anything to me one thing that's also been frustrating is just the lack of financial transparency available to the parents to help on and the need for the referendum or even just the needs of the budget overall for the school district so I know where small districts maybe don't have the resources to put documentation and materials together but we have those physical year Auto reports I'm not sure when the report we posted for 2021 now I'm all the way up to Century just the fancy balance sheet I would recommend you guys take a look at Elmbrook Public Schools I know they're much larger District but they put together a fantastic budget report every that also breaks down comparisons from the last five years and what those cost increases and decreases have been allowing a lot of transparency on Broad categories of both revenue and expenditure and as a builder who will be voting on this referendum tell you that I know you've spent what seems to be a lot of time the majority the meeting tonight was spent on how we're going to Market this referendum if you're going to get my vote as a concerned parent and I want to see the numbers wish I would have seen more numbers tonight compared to slides about marketing so I know you get too worried about public engagement and having meetings to win people over to the boat, as much as I want to support the teachers there. it's hard for me to make an intelligent decision without the facts and I don't think the community meetings and it said we have to be the quantity of you guys discussed as long as financial data is provided in a transparent form the mean FAQ on the website and it provides actual financial data that is not necessarily the best means of wooing people over to a referendum I supported you guys in the last last referendum if there's a need I'm willing to dig in deep support my kids and one is for the teachers and once for the fam The Village but it's hard to make an intelligent decision without actual data so if I if I could Echo anything that was said tonight and I was excited to hear but I haven't seen it yet and I'm very much looking forward to it is what the superintendent's about transparency and actually putting the numbers in front of the community so that would be my only request thank you thank you I'm trying to get answers to those questions back to you anybody else unless I get hi I'm assuming that's me hi my name is Katie Berkman I am not a resident I'm a teacher so I'm I'm hoping I can still speak yet and I'm not officially a resident in Sherwood but I feel like it with the hours I spend at school sometime great well I don't have very prepared remarks because I just decided to talk about 2 seconds ago but I just wanted to say the board I do you all have an incredibly tough job and to our administrators in the district as well it's very clear that no matter what you do there are decisions to be made and that there is no future without some kind of compromises and I know it is your job to look at everything in the whole picture but it's my job to advocate for myself and my students and I can assure would last year was my first year and I came to Shorewood for a million reasons but one of the reasons was that it was one of the districts that still and lanes for teachers and that very important because as we all know what teachers do not make a ton of money and it's not like we are in the business field and we can hope for promotions and you know we can love you salaries that's not a thing that happens in our in our world and so  Mayans is so important that you know I think if we see a future where it continually is threatened and and I seen that already at least twice in the last year-and-a-half since I've been here you are going to face a mass Exodus of teachers and staff and I know obviously from listening today and working in the district at this is an incredibly tough decision and you have a very finite amount of money to work with but we have to find a way to retain that staff and quite frankly we all need to survive and we need to be able to pay our bills the only way that you can retain that staff is by making sure that they feel valued and unfortunately in the world and the capitalist society that we live in comes out of money for a lot of us I work three jobs including my full-time one here also on my hometown fire department and so I I like I can't I can barely make ends meet even with the steps and Lanes right now and if there's a future where that is threatened I don't know what is going to happen so I think that is very important I think that without that you're going to lose with high-quality instructors and teachers and staff members but yeah so I just want to throw that in the ring again and I know you've heard from several people tonight saying the exact same thing but I just wanted you to hear it from another teacher but yeah we love Sherwood and we want to stay and we hope that we can so yeah thank you have another thing whatever whatever Shorewood with this at least particular group of students it's working really well these are our powerful advocates for what they wanted to talk to me about which was true Justice from what I understand you have a Akon Aramark audits maybe half a decade or so old it is is getting ready to be renewed or not the students take a really powerful case and I think they they approached me because I'm working on to justice issues that Milwaukee County I also have Aramark as a vendor and I can speak with you briefly to their rather reprehensible eye conditions both for their employees and the ones that they enable up with of substandard oh and your high school students got together they are from what I understand asking you to oppose the renewal of Miramar contract for at least long enough to look into what options are I can say that the ad Milwaukee a long fight we are looking at finally replacing that privatized Food Service similar to what you have here in Shorewood with a public positions again because as we've seen the Food Service quality and quantity end up also as importantly to think that the students the working conditions for the folks serving the food are all far better served by a public employees another using a third-party private Fender so I have no specific apps for you other than to to listen to your brilliant students and to explore all options before you redo this contract I hope that you will find either another vendor find it within you to give due consideration to making those public positions and all you'll back What about what's going to change cuz we don't know what that decision is his mother asked another five and a half million 7/2 million I don't see where it stops and we need to have now or maybe we can figure out a fix it and give you some of the some play thank you thank you they have data I'm here hello jumps win social studies teacher Shorewood Michael I think I forgot to meet unmute the last time it's been a while since I got them there's a couple of like real solid realities we need to face here in the midst of all of this what really solve this problem is getting the state's funding system you know fixed that's that's the problem the the government is sitting on several billion. that could be distributed to Public Schools who are all hurting across the state who are all facing the same problems we're facing with declining enrollments and Rising prices and all of that that's the ultimate fix seriously what would help here though is a solid commitment on the part of the board to steps and lanes for teachers salaries the since the since my time here is coming to a close I'm afraid you guys are going to be subject to plain speaking from me and I know that's something new you need to commit to steps in Lane you need to work with your staff through steps in legs you need to say this year we can't afford to find out. We need to stay this year you know this has been a great year everything's good you need to look at the fact that we are still in some ways a strapped to only negotiate for cost-of-living increase and our steps and Lanes with like remnants of a kin I mean there are deer are larger framework issues here that we are so busy putting out day today fires that we can't even begin to address the larger framework issues that we've face that are causing most of of the fires in the first place your staff loves their children your staff loves teaching in Shorewood and if they felt like they could depend on steps and Lanes as a framework for negotiation and conversation with the board and the administration a lot of the stress that's been put on them I'm in the middle of all of this would be would be I believe alleviated I didn't come to Shorewood because of steps in life I came to struggle to teach anthropology stuff some ways with a marvelous I've been here 15 years and for the most part I've loved every minute of it sure would you have amazing kids but I have to tell you people have to raise family they have to know they can count on having health insurance that's going to be usable they have to know that you're going to support them in their efforts to be teachers in this District and I know that every time steps and Lanes come up people like oh well we can talk about that but the fact is that your high-end Learners your high-end earners are retiring and that money should circulate back into steps and Lanes to help fund it that's how the system works but nobody seems to be able to have a Frank and fair and transparent conversation about it definitely you know Nicolet passed a referendum because they agreed with their teachers that if it passed they would commit the steps in life and have it reinstated and their teachers when and hit the streets and work hard to get that referendum pass I am telling you your your your teachers want to be here but please don't make it so they have to choose between being at your wood and providing for their families and that is truly the bottom line here so I mean I know we got financial problem somebody needs to drive out to Madison and kick Robin Vos squarely in the butt and I would volunteer but on a little level you guys have got to understand that this is a partnership with your staff with your teaching staff and they want to be of help but you got to let them know that they are worth fighting for here and until you do we're going to continue to lose amazing teachers and I want to thank you for letting me tell you what I would love to move to Sherwood and have our two kids help that attendance number besides benefit from The Amazing schools that store has to offer and steps and Lanes really makes that something that we would feel more confident doing knowing that we can financially afford to live in Shorewood and also provide our kids with the opportune that we would like to provide them I feel like I had more to say and I can't think of it so yeah so I would appreciate you know some clarity on Saxon Lanes you know I know that I've had almost all of your children in my classroom which is really great either now or last year I've been teaching for ten years this is my second year at Shorewood and I've been in many different districts and for a lot of the reason it was you know finding a district that that paid me away July but I can live on and now and it was before I had kids and I have kids and everything is more expensive because I know you guys know and I just ask that when you are considering steps and Lanes please think about my kids the way that I think about your kids everyday and the way that I try to take care of them in my classroom every day just if that if that's what you can do I Shorewood High School their Global Citizens so I can talk about Stephen lanes you've already heard enough about it on this is my truck to your teaching so I had a very glorious life before I decide to come back to be a teacher between we got the newbies on the ones that are leaving I want to stay here until I need to leave but because I teach Spanish and because I'm covering 2.6 positions across two campuses if we eliminated eliminate the things that make our kids Global Citizens that they are you will not have the tradition and Legacy that you have built across not just a kids but multiple decades we need to have Global citizen Ray Shorewood is a community that is built on trust knowledge Equity opportunity and equality what I heard tonight is telling me we're going the other way that is extremely insulting to our families for educators to our children show it has always put students first in my experience I don't see kids being put first and a complete thought process right now that scares me I left MPS because they were doing that so to be here halfway through my first year and I'm so happy I'm here makes me very concerns not only as a global Edge cheater and a former district code for Milwaukee Public Schools to make people understand the importance of global citizenry in the state of Wisconsin we need to make sure we hold a traditional live if you want to Tammy integrity and balance our children to blow ciee out of the water they are amazing children look at the intelligence that we had four different one of our blue my mind tonight we're going to lose that agenda for the moment I think our very next item is a quick update on the School Board elections so we have to open see a minute I'm so sorry I thought one was before the other I just had an operation to help even more I move approval of operational stations moderating monitoring document only one Global operation low expectation I don't need to speak this isn't one of our larger always but still there important because as we think about it it really is dealing with that word about expectations are we meeting our Ro he's in many ways and as we look at this and I always remember this his last years in essence we're looking you know did what did we do last year and a big part of our focus last year was coming back full time and really making sure that our schools were open and safe throughout the 2122 school year we talked about getting back on in compliance with Epi hours completing standardized testing which now seems so long ago and really making sure that we got back and instead with curriculum mapping and some of the kids do things and then just some of the joyous things like passages and the like as we look at we looked at what are some of the policy and procedures that we focused on and you can see the list there I'm not going to repeat it as we look at the specific expectations and board indicators there are three of them one is about violation of the and there were no significant violations there were some findings were we were in compliance minimally but we were in compliance with the oh he's secondly the next board indication has to do with illegal Acts and that the district last year was not found in violation of any law when legal action was taken and then we talked about the one that we are not in compliance with when we look at District stakeholders the threshold we want to meet at 70 cent of respondents expressing support and while we went up from the previous year at 44 we rested at around 52% and that is one that we have been working on just in terms of what we're doing in terms of two-way communication and the and we still have work to do so this I guess I'll end up there and see what questions board members have I'll ask my usual question about how we arrived at 70% significance of number I just was before our time I don't know I think so now it's not the time that we look at that but yeah but I don't know how we arrived at it okay it's just important for us to remember that it's been imposed in the in the system so we'll have to deal with the time but we set ourselves up for is it considered as we revise but on the compliance with the the current standard anyway any questions or comments I would just say just reflecting on you know I may be experiencing Sub-Zero just has been feels like 5 years in one year and I do you know probably to the teachers it feels like longer but wow. lots of being processed right now we have a situation. well I'm already here I'll it on paper 2/2 / 20 number report and I'll start with I have one was your first I didn't catch the order I know we have a few I'll do a quick update that meeting was today and in your packet you see the minutes from the SWS a meeting there were Forty-Eight members in attendance than the meeting was held virtually I think the most interest part about there was some action taken out of the district they showed their financials we also voted to place a member from the board of Kenosha Unified School District on the executive committee but there was a brief legislative update I would encourage people to take a look at the governor's State of the State address which will be January 25th I think that's a key date that will give us more information about the governor's budget and then I think the biggest thing there were two things I've done I would like to speak very candidly about regarding this first of all they talked about the new members jontay clerks now the chair of the education committee and there are three new members on joint finance and they suggested that we contact these people I think that's smart there was a great amount of time talked about the SWS a legislative platform and they encouraged all of member districts to really as we talked with the legislators have three key messages and I'd like to read them because I think that this is something I like bring board member attention to because I'd like to have us have a conversation about legislative advocacy and contacting these people as well as our legislators around these three messages the first one is and that these are the three I guess I'd say at the what's that we would want to make of our legislators increase the current funding for public students Buy $1,535 in the form of spendable Revenue to address record inflation and looming fiscal cliff you know we've had 0% the last two years this isn't ask that really makes up for both inflation and the fact that there was a zero ask and in the handouts for this I give you the information that they shared of where that number came from and I always think that's good for legislators to see it's not cold out of thin air secondly increase State special education reimbursement 250 60% in fiscal year 19 T percent in fiscal year to reach out to general education programming capsule messaging on this didn't the referendum messaging and I think it's really important you know we here in Shorewood run about a two million-dollar in essence where we use operating funds what we aren't getting in special education reimbursement we spent about three million and again I'm talking roughly we spend about three million dollars and get about a million dollars in special education reimbursement from the state here in Shorewood that amount if it were increased would help us tremendously and then third to provide funding for mental health services through a per-pupil categorical Aid I would like to also showed so that is what we would write our statement about to our legislators and I'd like for you to consider such as we look next week I'm at the next meeting I also put in the CPI increases and a sample of the some of the stories that districts were telling as well as that and I think there's some good stories there and we're working on some inflationary p is related to that I'm right now for that that I'll be able to bring in 2 weeks so the swsa meeting was quite helpful regarding hopefully getting us all singing the same tune as we think about this with all the member districts in swsa questions some of the question but a statement would you guys I was locked out this morning so I really was there you all know that I am not great at early morning but I was fully present and texting to and trying to join this meeting on Zoom like this not working anyway yes and they do I'm so glad you were on doing so I'm not attended the joint review board as a representative from the school district it meets annually to receive the annual reports and the performance status of each tax incremental District in the village and each taxing unit makes up the track review board approved the resolution acknowledging it and list of the different amounts of money that have a crew to the various districts to show how successful they have been in building the property tax base so the 10 District number one which was created in 1995 is most of the Village's business district on Oakland Avenue in Capitol with the exception of free overlays but just see that's the biggest part of it and it was closed in 2021 they kept it open for an additional year to support some affordable housing efforts and now it will close December it has raised the property tax base in the village by 4.2% so that that has a bump up so property tax basis now that much higher than it was prior to this and it's contributing in 75422400 dollars at that's how much they had an incremental value so they close in the next genius so that was interesting. Next meeting is a year from now thank you eating and one I just want to share that there doing a lot of incredible promotion for the district at a particular their marketing team story is going into the district meeting with Lum and really engaging with what was funded last year and trying to share the stories about how the work is implemented an impact on students and the district was really great to see some notable things that on Thursday January 28th at 7 p.m. they are having a meet and greet it's a very informal way to meet members keyboard as well as people in a district I'm going to try to make it in anybody's encouraged to attend this one the location is still being finalized so I can try that but be able to check in with see it on their website as well as Facebook and other social media and that's one way to connect with them with their annual campaign so far they have raised 75,000 and they're continuing to raise funds and they of course that I've shared in the past they have swing with seed that's going to be on Derby Day in May 6th and so if you want to buy tickets those are going to be out soon and if you want to auction items items to be auctioned they're also getting that information everything and I had a report on that water caregiver linkage more of you that in detail but we got lots of good feedback about I think that was maybe even the day after we had to run to the administrators to bring us the resolution on the referendum so with lots of a vbac about questions folks would have and what was important to them stands for a referendum but just feedback about what would be important to share a community and then they're laid out in the report so we can pop in a that was any questions on the milk rate is there a superintendent report next much of the superintendent's report was being transparent about the information that has come forth and that is on the web regarding the December 20th presentation the operating referendum or group in the December 13th operating referendum workup and I want to be clear on this right now that's understood your priorities in financial stewardship it will stay there but we will also move that information to the referendum site when that becomes live as well so that it won't be as three clicks away versus two clicks away Posey tire and I really appreciate all the input tonight. I will certainly address much of what we've heard in terms of some of the FAQ is and what will be putting forward but know that that will be a document that will morphine change will get up some very basic information and work from there just want to remind people that I'm this last week I I sent out and an information email to our staff indicating that we would be listing for the position of permanent director of teaching and learning as well as the principal of sis and I want to be clear on that that's my beliefs that for administrative and managerial roles I'm certainly hoping that our internal candidates Supply those in the current position and any others that are interested and I personally think that our people have done a great job I'm just not a fan of appointing people for permanent positions particularly since I've been in for a man that would live on Beyond me so I'm very hopeful that they'll be a part of that process and we certainly will move forward with input as we normally do for those key positions from staff along the way and family is particularly at sis update tonight regarding our work in professional development board members have any question please let me know because we certainly want to be transparent about what are those key priorities that were working on and wanted to give you an overview of that tonight today at the Atwater linkage with the leadership team I mentioned that I would be sure to mention 4K registration they are in a little bit of a competition between Lake Bluff for how many families have signed up and I'm not the same as for Atwater but for Lake Bluff is well I'm families if you are on this call and you have a student that will be in four-year-old kindergarten next year now is the time to sign up and we've done I think a really nice job of really talking about what are those opportunities we have is that more than a half-day experience by a milestones and I'd encourage you to take a look at what are some of those seamless things that make for a great experience here in our schools that would be great and Leslie just to give the board an update as well as the community we had some water pipes break at shs both into the administration building as well as in the auditorium building and those are well on their way I'm particularly more at the administration building and we got a little bit more work to do at the auditorium building was not referendum work these are pipe stood I mean this was not work that was in the referendum so it's not under warranty are there are things that we have to be concerned about that way we have to be concerned that this is still happening and that's a different concern but I also complement our staff at the high school who have been more than flexible in terms of some alternate arrangements for classrooms and I guess I'll close by saying again thanks to everyone for your commitment to our schools and I can believe that it's going to be semester as we look at that your school your clothes to have fear over so I take any questions on that and then I'll talk about the consent agenda not the question Anna superintendent consent agenda there are three retirements that the board is considering Cathy Daniels Julie Bennett and Christine Albright son and when I I just look at that and I'll get the years of service Cathy Daniels 26 years in our district Julie Bennett 26 years Christine Albright's than 16 years that's a total of 68 years of service and I always like to thank you people for the difference they've made think about the many students can you take that number and multiply it by how many students they've had impact on certainly they've been great professionals here we wish them well in retirement but even more so from this table we thank them for being teachers and being teachers here Echo Dot thank you. You did not have experience and contributions to many children medication soldering to think about I move approval of the superintendent's Santa I second the motion passes now your public comments teacher at Atwater I wasn't planning to talk but I just felt like I just wanted to leave you with a message that was kind of you know I've been in this district for my entire career so it's a long career and I've worked with a lot of kids and I seen a lot of things happened to the district bars in the district and most of them I was like really if they were good and some not so great you know but that's kind of history of it and I guess I just wanted to say I guess it's more of a plea that when start making the cuts in the budget which are necessary I obviously know we all know that that it seems like sometimes what gets lost what's least to me is the most important thinking that the kittens that's the students that I work with then I guess what I would say is you know I love this job and I love the statistic but what's really kept me here besides course from my amazing it's those kids if it's the kids that get me up in the morning get me on the road to come to school and so that's the lens I'm going to ask you two to really like prioritize I mean I'm not going to talk about stuff that's not even talk about tonight I don't want to beat any dead horses you don't I like where I could so I really just want you to think about when you make a cut house that can impact those kids cuz that's really matters and that's what I wanted to say something Q anybody else here in the think that might be the only one so we'll make sure of that as well I think my biggest to do is really have to do with just Foreman of the referendum communication and moving forward that way but only did I miss anything that you have on your list working together to draft a letter to text him about it what are messages obviously they're in the recipient list but along with members of the education committee and then it's either another answered in the like you were there were a few that were the super specific numbers on assumptions and how we got to are we are I don't know I'm going to I'm going to say something to that I think we may have to remind people that that is all public information on our website now don't all the budget numbers are there I don't know what to talk about what network is I mean I don't know what more there is beside that so that's I need to get some more information on that but I don't know if there is more but certainly the assumptions will be there but I guess I tried to take good notes so you let me process set a little bit more maybe Direction on how to get there I think that would be the simplest budgeting process quick here. I'll take a look at all of the questions and in the weekly memo I'll try to get a little bit give me a little the time I just want to make sure cuz it was 17 comments tonight I just want to report that I filed for that water caregivers and I know you've been so I don't know if you had a chance to go through those yet I did so I think like for example I was hoping to meet with the new buildings and structures anything else requested in about what if the projection what if the projections are better than what we're anticipating and what we do so I think that's probably worth exploring if we need to formalize something or the sharing that word we did have some conversation around that I mean there's not much to say yeah I feel like two key of A is it be like you know what if the state of Texas is winning formula and would go down in the next 5 years of this passes so you know scenario where there's property tax relief we just need to be honest about you know whether that's in the cards or how unlikely that might be you certain items legislative advocacy superintendent search recommended to update to everybody thank you thank you both should we do well everybody information on emotions on approval I agree and we were only like 6 minutes off of I really like the Student Center. you know I it was important I think with the people in the room that end because it's true to acknowledge and tell him you know the referendum is tied to the goal to maintain but you know I don't want to give short shrift to just you know protecting as soon as parents and talking about so you know baby maybe it didn't rise to the top tonight but I know as we go forward it yeah that was nice he knows that what's going to happen and where and how we move the needle on student results we find me a restaurant really like my thought that was really informative yeah and I was a question and I didn't agree to this cuz not making work for Mike that he's not be possible to do like a biannual or even quarterly parent engagement curriculum and instruction like they were looking for updates on you know okay I'm reading all the stuff in the newspaper about phonics like what are we doing and you know like every month not constantly times a year to check in and the end people are exposed to like you know love you but don't want to sit through the whole board meeting for that which you know I can appreciate it I got the other day so I opened it whatever but I was like that's true but I some of them are like for contacts how many people are you know as happened in Sherwood there like their Educators so they're nerding out on you know cross-curricular standards in like they know that the national social studies standards change and they want to know like what are we doing about so yeah like if they want to try it out with my joint like but I ain't nobody was like I want to know what books my kids are fine wasn't like coming from that space at all we are going to hear more about science of reading and questions about it there's no doubt meaning it's a pendulum swing back to Connex but we've already recognized
