Math Acceleration

Math Acceleration Process

Accelerated Pathway (2-year acceleration): Starting in 3rd grade, students are considered for math acceleration. The Cognitive Abilities Test is administered to all 3rd grade students during the school year. Students scoring in the 97th national percentile or higher in at least two of three categories on this test will be invited to accelerate in math. If students are determined to be eligible for acceleration, they will transition to an above-grade-level math classroom and begin receiving small-group support by an Advanced Learning Department staff member at the beginning of the following school year.

"Compacted" Pathway (1-year acceleration): Starting in 6th grade, students may be selected to participate in the District's Compacted Pathway, which features a one-year acceleration through a process known as curriculum compacting. Students are selected based on their in-class performance, standardized test scores, and classroom dispositions.
