Sonja Ivanovich (Teacher 1967-1999, Received Award in 2012)

Sonja ivanovich loves politics, history, teaching and travel. Shorewood students benefited from her wide interest for 32 year. She was an inspirational teacher of history, political science, and multi-cultural America. She was also a faculty leader, serving as chairman of the Social Studies Department and District Curriculum Chair for many years. She led the department as they made huge curriculum changes to better suit the times. I

Ivanovich traveled widely and took part in educational exchange programs, always bringing her world view back to her students. She founded and advised the Model United Nations program and was an advisor to, and is still an active member of, the Shorewood AFS program. She was an advisor to the Ecology Club in the 70s. Her students set up classroom recycling and encouraged the community to begin a recycling program.

Many Shorewood graduates trace their interest in politics, community service and history to Ivanovich’s classes. The community has also benefited from her active participation in the Shorewood and Wisconsin State Historical Societies.
